I completed and mailed last Tuesday my sketchbook for the Brooklyn Art Library Sketchbook project; supposing it doesn't get lost in the mail on its way to NY, my sketchbook should be included in the exhibition tour that will be going through 12 cities in the USA and Canada, so some of you might be able to see my drawings live :)

In community college I had a political science professor who despised Abraham Lincoln. This series is a tribute to his hatred. And a good measure of my progression as an artist.


Part Two Abe was a jerk after killing Osama.
Part Three Abe was jerk as Green Lantern.
Part Four Abe was a jerk escaping New York.

I started the drawing with a huge knight fighting a sun dragon, but it changed to this. I just designed the cover for a political book. Most of the photos are by the brilliant http://lindsaymackenzie.com/. A few are mine (typewriter...etc). Hope you like. Here's some blurb:

'Regeneration focuses on the question of intergenerational justice. Defining the world's young people as those born after 1979 - a hugely symbolic moment in the history of globalisation - it reflects on the massive growth in generational protest across the globe thirty years later. At its heart is an analysis of politics though the prism of generation. The incapacity of the major political parties in Britain to think beyond their short-term electoral interests is, by definition, particularly harmful for those at the beginning of their lives. It has led to a failure to act on climate change, savage cutbacks in education and training, an acute shortage of housing, big cuts in youth services, and, for many, the prospect of an old age without pensions. Things have deteriorated to the point where many young people are finding it impossible to find the wherewithal to settle down and have families - the classic marks of adulthood. But, as Shiv Malik argues in his preface, a diagnosis of the problem does not absolve the young from taking responsibility for developing solutions. We need more than 'a whinge of epic proportions'.

And, as he also points out, the young are well placed to develop alternatives: 'we are the most well-educated, innovative, dynamic and open generation in human history'. This means that this book also has plenty of ideas for changing the future.'

Salgood Sam: Very cool, great to see how you move through the figure. I always plan for the eyes but ink them last. It also reminded me that I haven't inked something on paper for over 2 years. Damn digital revolution. I cut my teeth on inking with a brush and nib pen; best training I could wish for. It showed me how to really see figures as volume, and make line more than just lifeless trace lines. Regardless of how artists ink, I think everyone should pick up a brush and practice with it anyway. It was a revelation to me.

However,(oh-oh - asshole alert) I'm really against the open call type of contests. I realize the argument for them is somewhat valid, i.e. unknown or new talent can get a shot at a big job, but $750 for a major marketing piece like this from a decent size label is a joke and I cringe when I see an artist of your talent participating. I don't want to come across as a $$$ snob, when it comes to commissions I have worked for a lot less, but they came to me specifically for my work. Normally I let this roll off but I have had 2 martinis and 3 Harvey Wallbangers so I am feeling brave (it took me 20 min to type this and thank the higher powers for spell check).

Bottom line, your work is beautiful and inspiring, don't sell yourself short.

There are probably others here besides me interested in a print if you don't win. Let me know if you get one on your society6 store, especially the b/w version (I like the color as well, but I've got a thing for line art/engravings and the like).

I have a project where I need to show a moody winter night, I leaned a little too heavy on my source for the figure, so I will have to replace her in the final, but what I was trying to achieve was a successful snow at night look. I think it looks right I'm just not sure if the snow dots was too obvious a solution.
