Came across a link of people posting their ideas/YouTube vids of the "most" haunting, beautiful music they've heard.

    One of mineMingulay Boat Song

Another: The Long Winters - The Captain Thinks Aloud

    What are yours?
  1.  (10487.2)
    Excellent question.

*scurries to external hard drive to make sure he's getting the names right*

[Back with an answer in 15 minutes...unless I get swallowed into my old music...]

    Ha, who needs 15 minutes?

So, I've three that immediately sprang to mind:

The first classical song that really captured me - The Lark Ascending

A song that, though not excellent, burns in my back - All Fires

And finally, one I'm glad never leaves - Rose Hip November

While I was checking their names, I realized that an honorable mention has to go to Judee Sill.

    Aaaand forgot to ask

@RenThing - have you ever seen Richard Thompson live at a folk festival? He's surprising. Also, thanks for The Long Winters, I'd not heard them before and I'm listening to them now.

    Oooh.

A Silver Mt Zion. Their music is unbelievably sad and beautiful. Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward breaks my heart with each listen.

    Ludovico Einaudi.

Sigur Ros' ( ) is unlike anything else they've released and it's one of my favourite ever albums. Sparse, minimal and haunting.

I don't want to spam with links so I will finish by just mentioning Stars of the Lid. Wonderful droney wondrousness.
  5.  (10487.6)
Ooo. Great idea. Kudos to Silver Mt. Zion, they define haunting music.

Hallelujah - I prefer the Jeff Buckley version

    Miss Misery - Elliott Smith

Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues - Chris Thomas King version

Kind-Hearted Woman - Robert Johnson. Pretty much any RJ is haunting, though.

There's gotta be room for this peerless synergy of video/audio.

I remember this tune rolling around in my head for years before I eventually found where it was from (probably heard it on TV sometime when I was a kid). Works like gangbusters.

Lost was a bit gash, but this track has always stuck with me.

Since RenThing offered this song, I thought it'd an alternate version I got to see last week would be appreciated. Adam Savage from Mythbusters performing it at w00tstock Founders Night. It's...awesome.

YOU WERE THERE? Shit, I was in the second row all the way to the right. I thought the show was great though the stand-up guy was trying a bit hard to be edgy I think (I loved when they started dancing around and flipping off the crowd).

No way! I was on the other side, in the very front! I was the guy Storm sat on, and my friend was the woman he pulled out of the crowd! She was super embarrassed.

Damn, THAT close to another Whitechaplain and never even knew it. :P

It's a bit tricky to find a version of this that isn't being used as a hymn, hence this MIDI version.

    Thaxted

And on the subject of hymns...

    Vivaldi Gloria

From a long gone local band...

    The Long Fidelity

    And finally...

    Something Dark is Coming

Could have filled this entire thread with joints from the Battlestar soundtracks. Good shout.

Heh, yeah. I'm going on the JoCo Cruise where most of the W00tStock founders will be in a week. Going to be sweet!

You local to the Bay Area? I'm down in SJ.
