The REMAKE/REMODEL meme is one of my favourite things. Artists need a place to show off and Whitechapel should always be It. A handful of entries will be showcased on Bleedingcool at the end of each challenge.

    Smells like a Wolf

    THE RULES:

-- This is for ART ONLY. Any pen-portraits, or crappy scribbles padded-out with words will cause a deployment of the newly-trained Urethral Attack Maggots. And a banned account.
-- No stock-photo manipulation. No half-arsed bollocks. Anything deemed to be piss-takery will be nuked from orbit. (Original photography is fine.)
-- No more than ONE submission by any one person.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

SAVE US, 80’s CARTOONS, YOU’RE OUR ONLY HOPE

It has been noted that today’s world has taken a peculiar lurch toward 80sdom. Uberconservatism in politics, racism in the news, trouble in the Falklands, riots on the streets, assaults upon the welfare state, godawful haircuts, an overzealous deployment of secondary colours in fashion, yuppiescum wiping their arses on the communal cashpot, and a general all-consuming pall of evil, doom and villainy hanging above the West.

How did we survive last time round? I’ll tell you how:

    LIKE THIS, YO.

…that is to say, with a torrent of French/Japanese/American animations about groups of broadly-anatomically-correct men and women in cellshade supercolour costumes, hitting/shooting/chasing shit, fighting against mincing cacklefops, walking jerkily past lavishly-painted backgrounds and always always always ending the day laughing unconvincingly at an irritating slapstick pet/sidekick and decrying the Evil Of Drugs. Also, the greatest themetunes EVER KNOWN.

You know the type, yes? Thundercats, Pole Position, Masters Of The Universe, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Ulysses 31, Dungeons & Dragons, She-Ra, Mask, Defenders Of The Earth, Mysterious Cities of Gold, aaaand so on. These are the cultural bedrock of my generation, oh chittering art-monkeys, and I have never ended a pub conversation without an attempt to remember all Marshall Bravestarr’s animal powers. “Smells like a wolf”, arf arf.

I’m not going to give you too many rules here. Instead I have a very simple command: I want you to deliver us from cultural evil, nothing more. Just as the original versions of these splendid fictions saved us all in the 80’s, you shall pick one, you shall modernise it, you shall reinvent it in ways hitherto unforeseen, and YOU WILL SSSSSSSAVE US ALLL.

Man, so far I haven't been able to do any of these past RR threads but I'm finishing some work this week and I'll ABSOLUTELY do something for this thread!

    "Ahem"

  3.  (10494.5)
I will allow ONE MORE posting of an awesome 80's cartoon theme - JUST ONE - because otherwise that's all we're gonna get.
  4.  (10494.6)
My deadline is finished. I have some not inconsiderable time on my hands until the next job begins. That is all.

    For now.

@Fauxhammer: Well, there's always the original photo option if you're not confident with drawing.

@Daddy Si: are entrants allowed to submit (original) computer generated animation entries for this one? I'm just wondering; I don't do computer animation.

    Love this r/r idea! Bravo!
I always felt deep down that the real hero of Bravestarr was 30/30 (cruelly all but excised from the pic above), the robo-horse with a wicked grin, who could pull a gigantic plasma shotgun seemingly from his ass and who consistently hauled the marshall's bacon out of the fire whenever he got in over his head. Which was almost every episode. The greatest spin-off series never made...

I will be dropping in with something presently.

    @dnewling -- don't see why not. Sure.

My Character was Dangermouse! So I took a spin at making him seem more "Daniel Craig meets Fivell goes west" (another great 80's character!) I really liked the old newsprint city style they used in the show.
  8.  (10494.18)
So can we do 90s cartoons next? I have this Captain Planet idea that I was going to try to do for this one, but then I realized he debuted in 1990. Next time, Gadget! NEXT TIME!

Also, it deserves mentioning that our dear mr. Ellis already did G.I. Joe in that Cartoon Network miniseries that came out a couple of years ago. It was fun.
  9.  (10494.19)
I'm going to allow the Dangermouse entry because it's Splendid, but -- for anyone who hasn't yet started their entry -- we're primarily interested in (to quote myself):

"French/Japanese/American animations about groups of broadly-anatomically-correct men and women in cellshade supercolour costumes, hitting/shooting/chasing shit, fighting against mincing cacklefops, walking jerkily past lavishly-painted backgrounds and always always always ending the day laughing unconvincingly at an irritating slapstick pet/sidekick and decrying the Evil Of Drugs. Also, the greatest themetunes EVER KNOWN."

...so try and steer clear of the "animal" cartoons, jokey/googly-eyed fare, etc etc, which also abounded in that Blighted Decade.
  10.  (10494.20)
Well, then I guess I'll stop working on Rainbow Flag Brite and the Kids of Color, and go back to drawing porn. :(
