In a deft 'child occupying' ruse, 15 fluffy mice were hidden round the museum for the kids to spot. My 'amused/appalled' compass is totally bewildered by this, as an Exocet missile with a cuddly mouse on it seems kind of, eh, wierd.

We are leaving the kids with Mother In Common Law later and going for a curry. And then I'll probably be used ferociously and discarded like a husk, probably with my head bitten off, praying mantis style.

This is my first time being single in 5 years after a 7 year long relationship. We broke up after year 1, at which I spent the evening of the 13th-14th morning traveling by train out to Montauk with two friends so we could climb onto a rocky ridge at the base of the light tower to watch the sun rise over the ocean. It was an amazing, bitterly cold (it had just blizzarded in NYC) and poorly thought out plan. We'd arrived in Montauk at 4am, then proceeded to walk for nearly 3 hours to get to the lighthouse, barely sitting down on the dangerous, slippery rocks in time for the sun to break. But dear gods, if you've ever wondered how people worship the sun, travel through 20 degree windy darkness for 3 hours and then have the sun suddenly raise the temperatures to above freezing in minutes to understand. Oh, and of course once the sun had risen, we realized that we were too exhausted to walk another 3 hours back to town and were magically rescued by an old lady who coincidentally drives out there every morning at sunrise to feed the feral cats and apparently rescue stupid 21 year olds. I wanted to do another snow covered beach adventure this year, but apparently winter released it's load early and we haven't seen an epic snowstorm since October, really.

The past 5 years have been spent celebrating my ex's birthday. I loved it, because it gave a better meaning to this day, and we could share the day with all our friends and go out to our favourite dive bars that would be emptied out as most folks were at proper establishments with their man and lady loves.

So this year I'm a bit hurting, a bit nostalgic but ultimately, I fucking love being single. I have been having a blast and am specifically avoiding my man and lady sexual partners to maintain distance (though there is much sending and receiving of filthy photos, because we care) and am more than happy to spend the evening with my one true love, epic work loads that will result in amazing things getting done & released into the world. I'm spending my Valentines / Horny Werewolf / Singles Awereness Day proofreading a rather cumbersome text on choreopolitics and Derrida and whatnot, and have long ago forsaken any idea of proofing the semantics of it all. So it's all just syntax to me now.

What I'd like to be doing is hanging out with friends or possibly the lady I was out on another was-this-a-date-maybe with yesterday, and I'm still kicking myself for not even giving her a hug. I think waiting for me to make a move is her plan for coaxing me out of my insecurity, but the leap is giving me pause. I may have mentioned that I usually need to go about doing things rather quickly or my indecision will kill my momentum, and I'd hate to see that happen. And we're both so damn busy we very rarely get to meet.

I've never really been a Valentine's kinda guy, but this is my first one as single in... I was about to say "14 years", but it'd be more accurate to say "ever". And that's a bit of a strange feeling, really.

My wife won't be home until about 9:30pm from her second job, dead tired and will, probably, want to watch the basketball game. I will be doing several hours of homework while continuing my Indiana Jones-a-thon. All the time waiting for a phone call. Yesterday, wait, my grandmother has been in hospice for 2 years now, okay, yesterday I get a call from my mother saying that the home called and to inform us that she will likely being dying within the next 48 hours. It's been a long two years for everyone as she has been enduring dementia so, in a sense, we have all been waiting for this call, that doesn't change the loss we are about to endure. It's a hard thing not to acknowledge when you work in restaurants. One of the busiest days of the year and all that. After hardly sleeping, I dragged myself up and to work at the swanky eatery.

16 hours later, meaning lunch and dinner, start to finish, and half a bowl of couscous later and I'm ready to go home. A little dead inside, a little more outside. The last hour has comprised of toasties and a depressing lack of beer, as I get to do the same tomorrow,

Day started out with waking much to early to get to an appointment in which I got poked and prodded in all sorts of uncomfortable ways so I can get long term birth control for free. Seems I have to wait till 30 to get tubal litigation, but if I'm still poor enough, the state will cover it. Until then, I'm getting something else that will ensure no chance of me being preggers. Then there was work, and texting happy valentines to that cute ginger guy, and getting disinfecting wipes to do another layer of cleaning my bathroom due to the (mild) plumbing disaster early Monday morning. The floor has been moped twice already, and it will probably get moped again a couple more times. I know I'm overreacting, but there are certain kinds of dirty I just don't deal with well. On the bright side, I did plan on cleaning my bathroom, I'm just cleaning it much more aggressively than I originally planned.

And my co-worker and her daughter liked the Valentine cards (and stickers!) I had for them. It's nice having at least one kid around that I can spoil, even if it's very indirectly. And it's an excuse to make cutesy cards and use stickers. I would love to be an aunt.

It would have been nice to have had a 2nd date with a certain ginger fella and being all cuddly and such. Single or not, I've never had a good one. Somehow I've never dated anyone who didn't manage to insult my efforts or blow off their own responsibilities on this day. I've spent 4 or 5 of these holidays in a relationship. The first one was tainted by narcissism with one girl (here's a nice date! Oh you're pissed at me for no reason while I buy you dinner), the second was "let's not do anything" until the day of (I bought her chocolates in spite of the rule) and then complaints that we didn't do anything (IT'S A TARP etc). The others ruined by drinking and disregard, respectively.

BTW guiz it sucks to be dumped a month before this holiday. Just FYI.

I've dated some pretty terrible women, but I find it hard to think that the efforts that I've put into this holiday for 0 gain, goodwill or otherwise, is anything but a punishment for engaging in it in the first place.

@Oldhat - thank you, that video was lovely. I have no fear of being by myself, I think I only don't go to the movies alone (except for once ever few years when i have absolutely nothing else to do). But it was a sweet reminder that the world thinks I'm ok without an SO.

Valentine's day has only occasionally been about romancing - or about being single - overwhelmingly, in my life, it's been about my parent's anniversary that is this day. Growing up it was all about either being the built in babysitter to my younger sibs or listening to the 'rents fight and sitting through extremely tense dinners. By the time I was dating I kinda wanted to ignore it but, again, anniversary... some years my mom (because it's not like my dad has had much real say in this, he'd just as soon do nothing which is THE WRONG ANSWER) wants us all to go out with them. Free dinner, I guess. But yeah it means spending VD with the 'rents.

This year they went out. To Marie Callendars, because mom put off making a reservation and restaurants these days are nuts so you either plan months ahead or you plan on waiting an hour or two at the good places. I had Japanese class. When I got back my baby bro asked if I wanted pizza or Japanese. I said Japanese after thinking about yakitori for the previous hour. He got some bento for us, I pulled out a meh whiskey I keep forgetting I own and we watched some cartoons.

My oldest brother is missing. This is hopefully unrelated. But it's hard to be sure with him. He has Issues. He has a little bit of money and senses warped enough to require medication. His friends don't know where he is. Mom had to call the police to ask if they might be holding him or...something. This isn't the first time she's had to do this. I have to work at being sympathetic. Maybe I just suck and I'm not a very good sister; maybe this shit is exhausting. My mom does it some how though. It's midnight and we've locked the doors and all we can do is pray he's safe.

Last year the local PD shot and killed a schizophrenic on the street.
