Music From Saharan Cellphones

Music from Saharan cellphones is a compilation of music collected from memory cards of cellular phones in the Saharan desert.

In much of West Africa, cellphones are are used as all purpose multimedia devices. In lieu of personal computers and high speed internet, the knockoff cellphones house portable music collections, playback songs on tinny built in speakers, and swap files in a very literal peer to peer Bluetooth wireless transfer.

The songs chosen for the compilation were some of the highlights -- music that is immensely popular on the unofficial mp3/cellphone network from Abidjan to Bamako to Algiers, but have limited or no commercial release. They're also songs that tend towards this new world of self production -- Fruity Loops, home studios, synthesizers, and Autotune.

In 2010, various versions of saharan cellphone music were released on cassette. Many of the songs were unlabeled, giving no insight to their mysterious origins. In the past year, the artists have been tracked down to collaborate on a commercial release. As such, 60% of the proceeds go directly to the artists.

I loved their first album then lost touch with what they were up to so haven't even heard their albums in between but this album - to me and oh so very subjectively - feels compositionally layered to a very mature degree. Like the difference between the simple person you were at 20 by comparison to the layers, difficulty, and wonder you have 6 years later. [I said subjectively...]

I've just checked and it's been 5 years since their first album so it chimes. I'd recommend taking 2-hour-long walks and letting the album sitting somewhere in the middle.

This local band, Badbadnotgood, is a bunch of kids doing jazz covers. Mostly they do hip hop, but they've obviously been listening to a lot of James Blake... They do a cover of "CMYK" and "Limit to Your Love." We're apparently post-history now? @Osmosis: had that one for a week or so, it's really fantastic. Made almost entirely on Oberheim Two-Voice synths, and it's got a real John Carpenter vibe to it. I managed to get an advance copy because I interviewed him about it for a magazine. ~~Now I want to make mixtapes with it, but I have to wait til after May 8th...~~ (Awesome, I got the release date wrong... it's out! Mixtape ACTIVATE!)

At the RECOFan record store in Tokyo, found a 1995 CD compilation of jungle tracks which must have been massive at the time: Roni Size's Timestretch, Remarc's Sound Murderer, Goldie's Inner City Limits, Leviticus Burial, some other stuff I've never heard of... Going down nicely.

Also found a 2 step garage comp targeted at Germany (of all places). A lot of Artful Dodger on there, as well as usual suspects like Phats & Small, Luck/Neat, Zed Bias, Wookie...

I swear Simon Reynolds has totally taken over my brain.

Both were ridic cheap as well. BONUS.

Wasn't sure where to post this,here or in Around The Net, but I guess here will do fine. I know a lot of you like Death Grips, so here's an interview I did with drummer Zach Hill. He gave me some pretty amazing insights into the band's process.

People are always asking how we make our music, how we use samples – we would talk about music concrète, stuff like that, and that's absolutely true – we often make music out of material that other people wouldn't think to use. Like for instance we might take a sample from YouTube and then build a whole song around it with these more hi-fi instruments, and then erase the sample from YouTube so it's not even in the track. There's a lot of recycling and destruction that happens in the making of our music.

I've been getting a lot of nocturnal playtime from Cex's most recent album Presumed Dead. It's a wide reaching 2 hour 2xCass release that drifts from classic Autechre FM synth vibes, to droning modern classical (aka classical music you buy at boomkat), to early academic synth pieces while painting a hazy picture of beauty. For a review I described it as "Tangerine Dream played by antisocial youth on benzos"

Apart from that, this month is all about HOLY OTHER....

That's off the first EP, and is arguably his best individual song.... there are a few tracks up on Tri-Angle's soundcloud from 'Held' but to experience the full heart-melting awesomeness, you'll have to buy a copy now. It's the most emotionally affecting album I've heard all year. It has barely any lyrics. Saw the live show last week, first time I've ever seen electronic music move people to tears.

I try and not post stuff from my own label here because I don't want to spam anyone, but this is a lablour of love... when we started Black Lantern we were inspired by a group called Penpushers, whose avant-garde, densely literate, mythical take on hip-hop really changed everything for us. The band split up a while back, but we've just released a free album by two former members, under the name Immaculate Emotion Engines. It's been on constant repeat at my house for six weeks, hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did.

I just managed to get these guys to agree to put their album out with us. One advantage of your label's albums being ripped and re-upped to servers in the former USSR is that it attracts the attention of amazing bands like Mr Morse.... they sit somewhere between Depeche Mode and Thom Yorke, with a clean, chillwave feel to their productions.

DEATH GRIPS leaked their whole new album NO LOVE DEEP WEB online this morning.

It's pretty fucking immense.

The cover is a picture of a cock with the title on it in biro. Don't know what's going on there.

Sacramento rap-punk outfit Death Grips originally reported that their second LP of 2012, NO LOVE DEEP WEB, would hit shelves “sometime this fall”. After announcing via Twitter yesterday that the “label (Epic Records) wouldn’t confirm a release date ’till next year sometime’”, the outfit responded in true anarchical fashion by making the album available on their own terms. “The label will be hearing the album for the first time with you”, they added.

This is the biggest music story of the year. I kind of suspected something like this would happen. I wonder how planned it was, don't forget this is a band who are on record as saying that everything they do as Death Grips is performance art. Essentially whipping your own album out from under the feet of one of the biggest corporate labels in the world, and then releasing it with a picture of a massive cock as the cover, well... it fits the description. I'm thrilled!

[Rambling story warning] I've had a snippet of a song floating around in my head for days, niggling & getting under my skin. I knew I'd heard it on a mix somewhere recently, but couldn't for the life of me remember where. After a lot of scanning through various mixes/podcasts, I finally found the source, which was on the highly recommended (but infrequent) Stones Throw label podcast, specifically the Quakers mix.
Subsequent exhaustive googling also brought up the original song from the mix that was stuck in my head, which I present now.

It's a total labour of love. Mild Maynyrd, another 'chapel resident, is on there too. We've released a 50-track 'best-of' comp which I'm really proud to be a part of.

Wanted to say thanks to so many of the people on this board who've supported the label creatively, socially, and sometimes even financially. You guys rule. I don't know how many of us watched the Grammys this year; I did not. However this performance, weather you like the music or the man or not, you have to admit, it's a refreshing direction compared to the over-produced stuff that saturates the pop world currently. The big band and orchestra were especially nice touches.

It reminds me of when Bruno Mars stole the show last year.

New Baths is 'mazin.

Debut oOoOO album is just gorgeous too.

... and the new Tricky is basically what I've been craving since Maxinquaye.

Pretty much these ~~two~~ three albums on constant repeat with occasional breaks for some Atoms for Peace.

I have to say @InvincibleM I'm really not feeling any of the Daft Punk album. Just feels like chart-bait. I am definitely in the minority though, in terms of the people I know... they're all digging it as a fairly uncomplicated party album. The song with Pharrell, to me, sounds exactly like this.
