I wanted to kick off an up-to-date movie thread as February ended a few days ago ... It was a short month, but it seemed to go fast, so I thought a three-month thread might do better this time.

The last movie I saw was Carnage last week, but I thought I'd share my thoughts on Shame. It's a beautiful looking movie, and after it and Hunger I can only hope McQueen and Fassbender keep collaborating for a long time to come.

Such a film will stand or fall on the two leads, and I thought both Fassbender and Mulligan added depth and despair to their characters. This was somewhat to the detriment of the other characters, who felt a little stilted (particularly Sleazy Boss Archetype). There are layers to this film. Brendan obviously makes up for his lack of sexual control with discipline and fastidiousness elsewhere. Sissy seems to have neither - or is this too much to assume from the one sexual act we see her in?

A few spoilerific thoughts:

Although his sexual drive is obviously compulsive, it seems to me that Brandon's desire to have increasingly "taboo" sexual encounters (paid, exhibitionist, three-way, homosexual) as well as his inability to perform in "normal" sex comes from an association of sexual desire with taboo. Given Sissy's comment that "we aren't bad people - we just come from a bad place", it seems likely that this impulse as well as the intensity of their love/hate relationship comes from an incestuous episode. Did anyone else think this?

I'm yet to see Shame, [that sentence could come back to haunt me.]

I did, however, just finish watching I Sell The Dead and it was a right old romp - indeed, much better than Burke & Hare. Very funny. It's low-budget was only occasionally visible and of the three twists at the end I didn't see the 2nd one coming.

It's thanks to the February thread that I'll now show it to my nieces and nephew to encourage their ghoulish minds.

[Edited to add: mwahahahhahahaHAAHHAhahahah!]

 @Osmosis

That was interesting, thanks. The taboo reading is not smthing I had thought abt. I'll follow yr lead in hiding spoilers.

Personally I felt the erectile dysfunction was due to the emotional / reciprocal nature of the lovemaking. This guy looks to sex to distance himself from himself and others. Climax = self-annihilation. For me, it emphasised loneliness rather than an obsession with taboo.

The 'bad place' thing. Obv, the ambiguity of that statement is never resolved, and you can read whatever you like into the characters' past history. I thought it was more likely to be an abusive parent (sexually or no), which led to these very divergent dysfunctional ways of managing relationships. Neither character really knows how a family works. I thought it may be because they didn't have a normal one growing up.

ETA:

OTM on the Sleazy Boss as well.

That depressing news aside, I know this isn't exactly contemporary but Open Culture has a list of a whole slew of Andrei Tarkovski films that have been put onto YouTube. I just recently finished Stalker, which is about three men traveling through a surreal, reality-warping post-industrial wasteland in search of a room that grants an individual's deepest desire. It's one of those fascinating films where you sit totally captivated the whole time, even though nothing is happening.

Still haven't checked out the others, but I've heard good things about Solaris.

Anyway, free movies. Oh, it goes at least as far back as The Tingler:

The Tingler is a 1959 horror-thriller film by American producer/director William Castle. It is the third of five collaborations with writer Robb White and stars Vincent Price, Darryl Hickman, Patricia Cutts, Pamela Lincoln, Philip Coolidge and Judith Evelyn.

The film tells the story of a scientist who discovers a parasite in human beings, called a "Tingler", which feeds on fear. The creature earned its name by making the spine of its host "tingle" when the host is frightened. In line with several other Castle horror films, including the 1958 Macabre and 1959 House on Haunted Hill, Castle used gimmicks to sell the film. The most well-known for The Tingler was called "Percepto!", which featured vibrating devices in some of the theater chairs which activated in time with the onscreen action.

I saw Young Adult this week, directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody, and starring Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt. You just can't lose with those names, really. It's very good. I've done a small brain-dump here. To sum up: blackly funny, uncompromisingly uncomfortable, mean but not mean-spirited. I swear Diablo Cody will save American popular cinema from itself. I can't wait for her directoral debut, sounds very promising...

 /Young Adult/:

I quite enjoyed it. I'll watch Charlize Theron do just about anything, however, and a lesser actress could not have made the script work. The entire movie depended on your willingness to believe in this former Homecoming Queen's obsession - but *also* believe she was a quasi-famous ghostwriter. You don't normally find the two things together, and it required an actress of Charlize's caliber to make us swallow this rather unlikely bit.

There's also a fairly unbelievable scene in /Good Will Hunting/ that this movie calls to mind. Nobody in a small town ever *really* says to the Smart Person, "I'm glad you got out and went on to bigger things and got free from our little lives here." I'm from a small town. Nobody ever does this. /Young Adult/ and /Good Will Hunting/ both shared this need to suspend disbelief that the people who were "left behind" in the town just realize how wicked smart the protagonist was, and were just dying for them to escape like the poor Morlocks can never do.

That blows suspension of disbelief for me...unless a talented enough actor can carry off the monstrous self-delusion and hubris needed to make it work. Theron does manage to his this in /Young Adult/ in a way Matt Damon never could.

Just finished Young Adult and thought I'd pop in to report, before bed.

blackly funny, uncompromisingly uncomfortable, mean but not mean-spirited
- agreed there, Mercer; I squirmed quite a lot but, like Finagle said, Theron pulled it off so well that I never took my eyes off the screen because I wanted to see what her face was doing.

I think the difficulty with the penultimate scene you mentioned, Finagle, is lessened in Young Adult because

the girl who does it, Matt's sister, is low in confidence, adored our protagonist back in high school, and wants out of her life; I also got a little unconscious desire on her part too.
I fully see what you mean and it does require a little suspension of disbelief but I think, in this case, the film and Theron handle it well.

Thanks for the recommendation.

Now who's got more RON PERLMAN for me?

Okay, confession time. I have never read anything by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The only thing I knew about this movie was that some dude named John Carter got sent to Mars and presumably did not immediately die of exposure and asphyxiation. All of which meant that I could enjoy (or despise) this movie on its own terms without considering the original works.

I liked this thing. It struck a lovely balance between not taking itself too seriously without descending into utter farce. The plot was somewhat confusing, especially the motives of the bald beings that showed up sometimes (it seemed that they could have found a less convoluted way to achieve their goals, but that's almost always true of villains in sci-fi/fantasy-adventure movies). I liked the characters. Taylor Kitsch brought charisma and a sense of human to John Carter and I liked that Lynn Collins' Dejah Thoris was her own woman with her own important goals, very much a partner and equal of Carter instead of a damsel-in-distress/prize for Carter to rescue/win. For that matter, even the CGI characters were great, especially that weird slug/bulldog thing. This movie immersed me in the setting and made me care about the characters and in doing so thoroughly entertained me. If you want a fun action adventure for kids and adults, I wholeheartedly recommend John Carter.

@johnjones - he doesn't have the chops, I'm afraid. See Bel Ami or that shite 9/11 film he did; in fact, even Water for Elephants was odd to watch as his face is so taught that he looks like he's holding about 4 expressions throughout the whole film. I'm hoping that Cosmopolis is going to be mad enough to keep the focus away from him and on weird-ass narrative and themes.

@Osmosis - Another reason to like that film? David Tennant. According to Simon Mayo, David Tennant is "...the British George Clooney." [Also: The Doctor; enough said.]

Hobo with a Shotgun - almost as enjoyable as The Ice Pirates [I hereby initiate the moment this thread begins to eat itself.]

If you like filthy trash, you'll love it.

For anyone inclined to watch The Ice Pirates [and join me in my Ron perlMANATHAON], I can recommend it on one phrase alone "The ship's got Space Herpes."

In other news, I watched My Week with Marilyn and it's a reel [sic] shame of a film - it's a great idea, executed well but there's a massive black hole at the centre of it SUCKING all life from it - it's name is Eddie Redmayne.
Boy can that boy not act: I never thought much to Emma Watson in the Harry Potters but next to him she's Marlon fucking Brando.

 @StefanJ -

I found /Kevin/ to be curiously empty. There are no real plot spoilers here, but:

You really didn't gain any insight or understanding into the personality of Kevin. He might as well be Damien from the Omen. We get some allusions to the similarities in his mother's personality, but nothing that really has explanatory value. There's no more meaning in his actions than there are in the development of his whole personality...just a bad piece of fate made incarnate.

Now, that may be a very deliberate choice on the part of the writer (book as well as movie), but I just find that approach doesn't stick with me in the long run. Everything plays on the surface, and I don't feel that one comes away with any better understanding of anything. About actual school killings in particular, I don't think it has much offer. I still found it an attractive and interesting piece of work, but the takeaway was extremely shallow.

I saw The Ides of March today and thought it a very well made film.

Either George Clooney is getting better at his control of the camera or he's getting better cinematographers since Confessions of a Dangerous Mind because both this and Good Night, Good Luck have masterly cinematography.

Ryan Gosling is well cast and Philip Seymour Hoffman too. It's unfortunate that the more I see of Paul Giamatti, the less I see him acting in different ways. Clooney's a difficult one to rate but thankfully, he's not the focus of the film.

For anyone that's seen it, my favourite moment is:

when Clooney's character, Morris, has to fire PSH's character, Paul: the scene is when Paul gets in the car and all we see is the slow track forward of the camera with the war march music playing louder, louder, louder and louder still until Paul gets out and the two cars drive away.

The cinematographic analogy of the grinding attrition-like nature of war's effect on morals in politics was perfect.

A few years back, I bought a fan-made recreation of the 1984 Georgio Moroder reconstruction of Metropolis.

For many years Moroder's version was the best-available version Fritz Lang's film, but in 2005 Kino put out a DVD which had both more footage and FAR better print quality.

The fan version ("Metropolis Redux") melded Moroder's contemporary soundtrack with the crisp 2005 footage, adding in the color tinting of the 1984 version.

I though the recreation was pretty cool . . . but a curiosity, since Kino had since release "The complete Metropolis" with 25 minutes of long-lost footage and the full orchestral score.

THEN Kino released THEIR official DVD of the 1984 Moroder version. Out of a mixture of curiosity and wanting to do the right thing by the musicians who did the soundtrack, I bought this DVD. Well, Blu-Ray.

Wow, major suckage. The print quality is just awful. It's been over a decade since I lost my VHS of the Moroder version, and I'd forgotten how terrible the quality of the visuals were.

I'm going to leave the Blu-Ray on the shelf and consider "Metropolis Redux" to be the true successor to Moroder's version.

Even then, I suspect I'll be watching the Compete Metropolis more often. That was splendid.

 @Finagle

On We Need To Talk About Kevin, I think the boy being hellspawn is a conscious choice by the film-makers. The book (which I haven't read) is told from the mother's P.O.V. so it's her perspective on the child that is presented to the audience. The film can't go that far – the form makes it more difficult, I would argue. But for me, it's still very much about the mother's terrible parenting, which in turn explains why Kevin becomes who he becomes. My post on the film is here. For me, it has the feel of Brubaker's /Criminal/, and does a better Jim Thompson-ish feel than the last few adaptations of that author's actual work I've seen.

There are only about a dozen movies I will rewatch whenever they come on regular TV, and /Drive/ will be one of them.

ETA: I would put the first 10 minutes of this movie, by itself, up against any other 10-minute short film, as a stand alone work. If you aren't sold on this movie after the first 10 minutes, then ...well..you don't like fun.

Glad we're all Drive fans here.

I've read many articles saying that it's all surface over depth and I couldn't disagree more: for me, the film's a genre film that still manages to be about urbanity, isolation (the good sides, the flipside, the reasons for) and is a very real, very well done demonstration of 2 things -

- what happens when you come out of isolation and reconnect with humans and;
- the parable of the scorpion and the fox.

It also happens that the cinematography is awesome. Especially in the 1st ten minutes.

@InvincibleM - I've seen neither Shivers or Slither but I have a similar slug-filled [though I should warn you, they do evolve past the slug form] Korean film - The Host - and jebus is that good. @DC - the Scorpion and The Frog is the same fable as the Scorpion and the Fox, methinks. I think they're variations on the Aesop 'The Farmer and The Viper' but I'd have to check that - either way, they're definitely variants on each other.

@ Mercer - a chance to extol the virtues of Ryan Gosling? Although Osmosis beat me to it, I'll give it my best shot. ;)

The Scorpion in the film [Gosling's character identified by both his secrecy, his desire for transgression, and, you know, his scorpion jacket] is toxic to everyone around him but I would argue that - especially as the further into the relationship between him & the woman & the child we get, the less he wears the jacket and the less deconstructive things he does - he doesn't want to be The Scorpion.

It's a struggle between Eros and Thanatos, Life and Death, Day and Night - relationships and driving on.

All of this is, of course, couched within the theories of superhighways, super-modern-cities, urbanity, isolation, and urban decay that postulate late-20th Century America as building cities that weren't made to be traversed by man but only by car. The esssentials we need from these theories [and their consequences] are all implicit in Ballard's Crash but are brought to light by Drive.

I'd also argue that it's more than simply an exploration of the fable. He isn't just The Scorpion. He is also The Hermit.

My reasons are manifold:
- Even though he is in the criminal underworld, he is entirely clear, honest, and specific about what, how, and when he does it.
- Gosling's character has 'just walked in one day' according to his employer; from this, we can see that he has left one life behind; ergo, he has made a complete journey of life - he has lived, he withdrew from the mistakes and the difficulties of humans, and then he returned to humanity more knowing of himself when he 'just walked in one day'.
- He is exceptionally quiet, internalized, and lives alone.

All until the intrusion of the honesty of a child and a woman. Then he sees a possibility to become something different, to return to humanity.

Away from the character and onto the cinematographic front for a while, I'll tackle the major objection by most critics: the violence is heightened because violence is heightened, it does do fucked up things to your eyes when you're in the middle of it. We've all experienced it. The actual violence is sporadic. It's short, it's sharp, and it's nasty - like real violence. I think this is done as a juxtaposition with the light, airy lenses used when they're at a pond or the lens flare in a lift when they kiss. All of that so as to make the extremes exactly that, extreme. The lift scene is a perfect distillation of this.

This juxtaposition of extremes is his nature but it is also what he doesn't want his nature to be, why he retreated from humanity so, and the cinematographic metaphor for his changing position from The Hermit into The Lover into The Scorpion.

[and now I've probably typed enough...though I could definitely go on about Ron Perlman's performance and his archetype in the film, Tarot or otherwise :)]

Damn Ben, you nailed lots of ideas I had about the movie that I couldn't wrap my head around and write.
I wouldn't mind reading about Perlman:)
Yeah, the scorpion and the frog is a variation but both fit very well with the driver's tale. In the scorpion and the fox, the scorpion takes an opportunity to kill his enemy despite knowing it would kill him. He'd rather die if he can take his enemy with him.
The scorpion and the frog is very similar but the difference is in the scorpion's motivation to kill the frog, a gentle soul who accepts to help the scorpion and which the scorpion kills because it's in his nature. He can't help it.
I can see these two tales on the driver's relation with those he loves (the girl, the kid and the garage owner) and also with his enemies.

I quite liked the film, but regarding the parable:

They play with the Scorpion and the Frog fable a lot. @J. - Yup, that really is our UK subtitle. Old 'Chuck' Darwin is one of ours so we're probably more inclined toward him.

It is interesting that it's a religion vs. science backlash in the USA and not just a marketing "We like more OOMPH in our title" thing though - it's a real shame because some elements of the film feel [not very but just a little] steampunk [the Queen's flagship and one of her big secrets(!), if you get to see it] and I think the longer title is both steampunk and delightfully Victoriana.

The whole thing's delightful. It's also entirely self aware with brilliant pub names like "The Hook, Line, and Sinker" when a trap's set; 'Lonely Street' when someone's cast out - I won't say anymore in case I spoil it but it is lovely.

@Ben: Sadly it's not out here until the 27th, I'm looking forward to it. As for the religion vs. science thing, that's just my guess. I would bet that US marketing/localization saw that and said, "hmm, that won't fly here". Band of Misfits sounds...OOMPHless to me, blander than plain oatmeal, might just as well have been The Pirates! On a Boat. Whereas, In an Adventure with Scientists, sounds quirky and already goofball. Beyond the quirkyness, and it may be a nerdy niche thing, but that subtitle increases appeal for me.

So more than a week ago I was asked how often I got to the movies. Other than seeing Arrietty for a class project that last film I could remember going out of my way to see was The Muppets. So I said I rarely go - maybe two or three films a year. Kinda sad, I used to go two or three times a month, and I made a point of going to see good films at least as often if not more so than blockbusters. But between poverty and not wanting to go by myself...I haven't been getting out much in years.

Ironically a few days later, siblings descended on the house and a plan was quickly assembled to see Hunger Games - which I was fully planning on skipping and had already read stuff with spoilers because...I wasn't interested in seeing it. The only spoiler I can think to mention is
that the body count is high
I guess it wasn't so thoroughly spoiled for me because I didn't know who was going to get gacked - I totally understood that there were no promises that anyone would live. So based on that, the audience shared a measure of the anxiety of the contestants, not knowing where they might find security or hope.

But I don't tend to like to open myself like that for violent movies. And here's the thing, The Hunger Games is a perfectly decent movie. It doesn't completely collapse because it doesn't really try to be much. It's slick. It's awfully slick. Frankly, to a peacenik like me, it's disgustingly slick with camera sequences for sudden brutal scenes that are straight out of any contemporary textbook for action films. If the point is to be horrified by the random violence kids perpetrate on each other with so little prompting then the abruptness and kinetics of a thrown punch - never mind stabbing or other acts they commit - have to be relayed as straightforwardly as possible. Don't speed up the recording, don't kill the sound and don't tilt away. Make us see the kid absorb the blow and get laid flat. I've watched real fights, the speed and eruption of the true thing doesn't need to be dressed to be stunning.

So. I didn't want to see it. And I walked out wishing I could have spent the time doing other things. But I like my siblings. Even if they didn't look at Rue and see my niece as I did (9 years old and cute as a button, fierce on a baseball diamond but utterly lost if you started to yell at her). Spent half of the movie on the edge of a panic attack and/or in tears because of her.

So last night I watched the remake of St. Trinians to find out if I should find it and its sequel for my nieces to watch.

It's...disappointingly brash. The original is so funny because it really looks like they had little control over what the hell anyone but Alastair Simm was doing.

The remake is very 90s, oddly: it revels so much in jokes about skunk and/or buzzing/tripping/bla-bla-bleurgh that I couldn't help become not-interested at certain points. Not only that but it really fetishizes the prepubescent. I felt really really old when I realized I felt pretty uncomfortable watching certain bits - they are fishnets and hold-ups and a camera focus on someone who I think is supposed to be 14...weird.

However, saying that, once I'd finished my mug of Horlicks, I laughed at the slapstick, I enjoyed Stephen Fry, and I realized why my nieces expressed an interest - it's all quite simply bubble-gum fun [if you avoid the pervy weirdness].

So, if you've young familia who express an interest - I say 'why not' but if you yourself think it'll be fun...erm, no, sorry.

@Mercer - um I did. See above. Just had a long discussion with my siblings too. Couldn't quite make my case for why its framing bothered me. The story was nearly exploitative about how violent children can be, particularly unquestioningly. I say that because the movie could have been about a million things in a world that allows for children in gladiatorial situations, but it focused hard on the brutal situation they were in. So its thesis was "look how tough & cool it is to make it through these fights." As an audience we're allowed the out of not thinking of ourselves on the same terms as those who organize & watch the games because we know it's fiction. I can't think of the film without thinking of that.

It's the first film by Australian director Justin Kurzel and features an amazing performance by Daniel Henshall playing John Bunting, who is known as "Australia's worst serial killer". It's a bizarre character that is very hard to shake. The fact that he's a real guy makes it worse.

I typed up some more thoughts on it if anyone wants to check them out after seeing the film. They are on My Film Blog

Saw Tyrannosaur last night. Definitely not a first-date movie or those wishing for some light relief. It's a pretty hopeless film (thematically), but as Considine's directorial feature debut it is incredible.
There should be a new category created to give Peter Mullan and Olivia Coleman some kind of 'best tragic double act ever ' acting awards. For those who have only seen Coleman in Peep Show, wow.. girl's got skills.

Went to Cabin in the Woods last night with the missus. Huge, huge fun had by all. Lots of couples and mums on a night out at the cinema we went to, so we actually got to watch it without yapping teenagers and phones lighting up. It was even better than I'd hoped and my hardcore horror fan wife actually jumped at one point, which was amusing. Favourite performances: Bradley Whitford and Fran Kranz. I am biased though seeing as Bradley Whitford is one of my favourite actors (Why did they cancel Studio 60!) and Topher was one of my favourite characters in Dollhouse.

Saw Wrath of the Titans and Cabin in the Woods today.

Wrath is much better than Clash, having clearly defined stakes and a decent theme running through it. It was only ok, but that's a big step up from Clash, which was just a mess.

Cabin is every bit as good as was said. And that's all I shall say except that the level of spoiler avoidance going on is perhaps a bit extreme, given much is made obvious early. However, anyone spoiling the final act for you deserves a throat punch.

Funny thing about Cabin I read about yesterday from an interview with Joss:

Every monster listed on the whiteboard makes an appearance, in some way, no matter how brief. Joss' favorite were the dismemberment goblins, who were goblins...that dismember people. Another favorite of his was the Molester Tree, which is essentially the tree from the first Evil Dead. You only see the Molester Tree briefly in the first elevator scene lobby but there apparently existed a scene, cut from the movie, where the Tree got more screen time and was more..."molesty"

There's also apparently a Firefly Reaver at some point among the monsters.

Watched Cabin last night, and have to agree, one of my favorite "Horror" movies period, and one of my favorite movies this year (so far).

If I were to pick on thing that I had issue with

And it's hard, because if you accept everything else that happens in the film, why accepting this one thing is odd, but I get "pheremone gas" making people horny, but what gas makes people go from "We need to stick together" to "We should split up"? I get that they had some way of lowering people's IQ or something, but it seemed a stretch that some gas would make you think the opposite of what you were thinking. I know, I know, I've successfully suspended my disbeleif for Redneck Zombies, invisible force-field walls, molesty-trees, evil elder gods, and every other monster under the sun, and I'm having trouble with opposite gas. I guess its because everything is this world follows a set of logical rules, and this one thing stands out that doesn't fit as well. Maybe if they had just said "hit him with the opposite gas" or something that explained it better, like they did with pheromone gas, maybe it would quiet that very small voice.

Wow, that's one small thing that took a lot of explaining.

I managed to be in London 10 days and not see a single film at the cinema...I really should have taken more breaks from work.

I did, however, catch The Illusionist [the animated Tati-inspired, not the dodgy goateed] and Primer on DVD.

Both are interesting films.

The Illusionist is charming, moving, and sad. Its comedy is simple but effective, its characters stock but beautiful, and its bittersweetness remains firmly stuck in my throat. I recommend wholeheartedly to watch, to own, and to adore.

Primer is a film for mathematicians: I don't mean that the maths and physics involved are so high-concept that they can't be understood [because they can and its fairly simple] but the portrayal of the characters, the speed at which they speak, and the way the camera works is fast and distant. Its cinematography reminds that there's always something going on the background: this of course leads to a Brechtian distancing on the viewer of but doesn't do so much with it - due to the fast pace, sometimes things slip by and you don't care so much. The two leads do well but other than that, there aren't many on screen. In closing I'd say that it works better as a discussion piece than it does as a film. I recommend watching but not owning.

@flecky - it's worth a rewatch, if only for the challenge. I was stoned when I saw it so I may try rewatching it sober. It's a slightly difficult film [emphasis on film] in that you don't care for the leads much but that does let you think over the concepts on your own while observing the goings on. I'd be interested to hear what others think.

Today, my friend has invited to pay for me to go see Avengers Assemble with them - I'll not turn that down. So, expect a quick post later.

I guess when I said 'later' I meant a lot later.

I think I didn't post about it yesterday because Avengers Assemble was a fun bit of fluff but it felt like exactly that: fluff. Popcorn fodder. Tentpole filmmaking. There's nothing wrong with that: in fact, it's very enjoyable - so enjoyable that I gave up on trying to read too much meaning into the [very professional but very slick & quick] cinematography after about 15 minutes and the really impressive first major set-piece. On a personal fan-boy level I was chuffed to see the Maria Hill character in there.

So for anyone who has seen Avengers Assemble, I have one question: could you see that film without seeing any of its predecessors and enjoy it as fully?

Final note, Joss Whedon must have so little free time: Cabin in the Woods, Avengers Assemble, Buffy comics; what a chap.

It is Boston Independent Film Fest time round these parts and caught an excellent screening of "We are Legion: the Story of the Hacktavists" last night. Excellent movie that really excelled at loosening up the audience with humour before digging into the impact of the Anonymous movement with deadly seriousness. Highly recommend.

Here's a trailer:

We Are Legion Trailer

@Ben - I'd say you could watch Avengers without seeing the previous ones and still enjoy it, but it wouldn't be near as much fun as seeing all the little story threads from the other films joining up. I also was pleased to see they put Maria Hill in it, and that they found ways to work in some of the more 'famous' lines from the comics in interesting ways.

I really liked it. It's not going to top many 'best of' lists, but a nice big fun movie was what I really needed this weekend, and I felt they got a good balance between the action, the humour and the 'not letting Robert Downey Jr. totally take over the film'.

I suspect there's going to be a LOT of people quoting it in the office today as well...

If you were expecting any other movies to be AWESOME this year, tough.

The Avengers has used it all up.

I've seen it twice now and it didn't lose a thing second time 'round. It's big, it's fun, it's occasionally hilarious, it brings to the screen iconic moments from the decades of Marvel comics (the Helicarrier, Hero vs. Hero, big action in the streets of New York) and if you're anything like me, it'll make you feel like a kid again discovering comics for the first time.

The cast is perfect and there isn't a single character in it who's there just because they were in the comics. They all have their moment in the sun.

Go see it and thoroughly enjoy yourself fo two hours of your life.

Avengers (Assemble) was brilliant fun. Definitely one of the best blockbusters I've seen in a long time. I didn't care all that much for Iron Man 1 and 2, though they were fun enough. I didn't like Incredible Hulk at all (preferred Bana and even though everyone disagrees with me, I preferred that whole film.) as it felt entirely formulaic. Thoroughly enjoyed Thor, though. I was really happy to see that the feel of Avengers was a lot more like Thor than the other three I saw (Never got around to Captain America) and that the trademark Joss Whedon banter was present.

It was one of the few superhero films where the characters just being around each other not "doing" much (ie: Not bashing people's heads in or dodging missiles) was just as entertaining as the action. I wasn't waiting for the next set piece. At all. But when they arrived, boy did they arrive. And that is a great action movie.

Also have to say I am incredibly happy they didn't have Hulk say his famous line in this one, as it felt like entirely out-of-place fan service in IH. They handled that one really well. And then Hulk handled something else really well, which I won't spoil by saying any more.

In other news! I've been watching VEEP, and it's all entertaining and cringeworthy and all that stuff, but how in the hell is Julia Louis-Dreyfus 51?! The Thing I had for her back in the Seinfeld days is still as big as ever, if not bigger.

That scene sounds hilarious. Guess it could be something they added after they'd finished the European version. I still dunno why we get it earlier than the US, though I'm not complaining about *that*!

Also, Avengers was awesome. Very possibly the best of the Marvel flicks so far, though part of that could be because of that thing about all those little plot threads coming together. I've seen all the Marvel flicks so far, so you get that little spark of recognition, adding a little extra to the movie, as well as ensuring you're already invested in the characters (besides the Hawkeye/Black Widow combo, who do well without the backstory too). It's awesome in so many other ways too, though. And god, but the Hulk has so many great moments, it makes up for both Ang Lee's weird surreal flick and the entertaining-but-forgettable Marvel-universe flick.

Best single punch I've seen in a movie so far this year, just after the second time he Hulks out. A little later, the sudden Thor side-punch. "Hulk? Smash." Puny god.

So last night I saw This Means War.

It's a very silly film. If you can enjoy the ridiculousness of the set-up, the actors actually - surprisingly - pay off well. If you're a fan of Chris Pine or Tom Hardy, you'll probably enjoy it.
It's direction isn't great but hey, you're there for the extreme-bromance and, I say, take it with a pinch o' popcorn and it's certainly one of the best things McG's done.

Today I watched Chicken Run and, as always, Aardman made me laugh heartily. I hope there's an Aardman box-set out there somewhere.

I look at them and see Beta Ray Bill...

I fucking loved Avengers. Cynical douche I may be, but Whedon made a perfect action film that wholly lived up to the greatest Avengers stories. While it's not smart cinema, it's a dumb movie made smartly. Action directors should take note: the tension of the action is born from the characterization. The conflicts are well established and the character relationships make sense.

I'm the kind of nerd that looks to the future, sooo...

Thanos means, to my mind, Captain Marvel. And Captain Marvel means Kree. And Kree means Skrull. I'm curious to see if they try and fit the Pyms or any of the other planned Marvel films into the next film. Okay, the UK distributor of Iron Sky is really fucking things up. They're going to show the film for just one day, which isn't actually what was agreed upon. Me and the film guys would really appreciate raising some noise about this, if you can be bothered. Revolver is SERIOUSLY fucking the Iron Sky people over with this stunt.

See, when I started to work on Iron Sky, I wanted to make a cinematic experience, a film that works best when you sit in a dark room with 500 other people and watch, experience, laugh and enjoy as the epic story about the Moon Nazis unfolds in front of your eyes. Now, following the UK plan laid out by Revolver, the film is out in cinemas for only one day only (and that’s WEDNESDAY of all days).

I think this is an insult to us, the filmmakers who have been working with this film for six long years. We signed up with Revolver because we wanted to have a wide cinema release, and that’s what they promised us. But more than that, it’s an insult to all the fans, friends, followers, fan investors and everyone out there who’s been waiting all these years to see the Moon Nazi mayhem known as Iron Sky to hit the cinemas.

http://www.ironsky.net/site/iron-sky-in-the-uk-for-one-day-only-bollocks/

I quite enjoyed Real Steel as well. It's a blatant by-the-numbers type of film (BUT WITH ROBOTS) but it's played with so much charm that it doesn't matter that much. Plus, it opens with a robot fist-fighting a massive bull. That's got to count for something. And Hugh Jackman. I tend to refer to it as Rock*E, though.

It doesn't quite seem logical to me that they'd need any kind of permission from Rock 'Em Sock 'Em to make Real Steel. I can't recall anything in it that hints at it.

Just got back from seeing The Avengers - first time I've been to the flicks since S*p*rm*n R*t*rns in 2006 (?).

Very, very good, even though I'm not that much of a Marvel reader, and felt like I was in there for way longer than the actual running time, but in a good way.

Loved the all scenes/quotes some of you have mentioned but my fave was

Cap's:
Barton: I want you on that roof, eyes on everything. Call out patterns and strays. Stark: you've got the perimeter. Anything gets more than three blocks out, you turn it back or you turn it to ash. Thor: you've gotta try and bottleneck that portal, slow them down. You've got the lightning - light the bastards up! You and me [to Natasha]: we stay here on the ground, keep the fighting here.
And Hulk...smash!

Heh. Still chuckling.

[old fart] When did cinemas begin cranking their volume up to 11? [/old fart]

Loved it so much, I've seen it three times already, and it does not bore me.
An at my third viewing I started to appreciate the characterization, dialogue and even the direction done.
I like how one of you said, that it's a dumb movie done smartly. It's a fitting critique.

Like the scene when Coulsen is talking to Cap about his costume, and Cap asks, "Isn't that a little old fashioned?) and Coulson responds, "considering how things are right now....People could use a little old fashioned" and then later when Nick Fury is giving Cap and IM the "Push" saying how it's an old fashioned notion to believe in heroes. A great subtle way to connect with the audience.

ANd I loved the natural friendship tha occured between two geeky scientists, Banner and Stark. Not just because they are both scientific geniuses but because Stark was fascinated by Banners control of the Monster within.
I didn't notice it the first two times, but the third time when Stark and Banner are talking about Banners "condition", there is the image of them talking through the see through computer screen suggesting they are reflections of each other, hinting at Starks own Inner monster. As if, even at this point, he knows he has his own inner monster to control. An image of duality, yes nothing original about this, but it was a perfect way of hinting at Tony's "Demon in a bottle" story arc were he eventually sucumbs to self destructive alcoholism.
I'm actually hoping that Banner takes a supporting role in IM 3 to keep exploring this relationship.

It's only a few weeks till Prometheus is released, and that's a good thing, hopefully...

Because of The Avengers being screened there, I'm actual glad that they built that atrocity shopping center where I live; £7.50 before five o'clock aint too bad. And yeah, my old fart ears enjoyed the volume at 11.

Eh, did anyone see it in 3D? See, the reason I ask is because I've not seen anything at the cinema with novelty glasses on since I groaned my way through stuff like Jaws -3D etc. in the eighties, and I'm just wondering if I should folk-out a few extra quid for Prometheus, and sit with sunglasses on for "extreme entertainment", or just do the sane thing, and watch it in "old fart vision"? I'm not having a pop at 3D, we've heard all that, I'm just a bit...curious, is all.

Ah, it's my choice!

And, I'm slightly embarrassed to ask, who was that pinky behemoth evildoer that showed his mug at the end during the credits? Shit, for a few seconds I thought it was Darkseid, but he bats for the other team. I'm fairly certain who it was, but my inner fan-boy was on vocation.

Anyway, probably best Marvel film I've seen.

#Apart from Howard The Duck# (old fart cynicism)

 @Twentythoughts

As told to me by my wife, the part in Iron Man where Tony comes back changed from his experiences in the Middle East and wants "a cheeseburger"? Apparently, years before Robert Downey Jr went on a bender of drugs and alcohol and had a moment of enlightenment about his state in life while sitting on the curb of a fast food joint's parking lot, eating a cheeseburger, and decided at that moment he wanted to clean himself up. I wonder if he had any input into that scene in the movie based on his real life.

They'd actually made him cut a couple of other drunk Tony scenes. Saw Burton's 'Dark Shadows' yesterday. I'd like to say it was good/bad, but unfortunately it was cut to the point the plot made no sense at all. Seriously. It wasn't just a little disjointed, the censors had viciously gutted the poor fucker beyond any recognition. The kicker? How do I know so much content had been ripped out? A great deal of it was shown in the trailer, in that very same goddamn cinema. I don't think the movie's going to win any awards, but still. Exceptionally frustrating.
There are many interesting and worthwhile parts to living in the middle east. Censorship is not one of them. I hate it so, so much.

Conversely, the same afternoon, we also watched How I Spent my Summer Vacation, which the censors had not touched. I agree with RobSpalding above. Surprisingly enjoyable!

@Vornaskotti That's true. On the other hand, the censors over here are a little heavy handed and care not if their cuts are rather intrusive. It always feels as if someone's just torn a fistful of film out of the reel in disgust. You can always tell a cut, which makes it even more annoying. They generally get rid of unmarried couples kissing and nudity. I re-watched a Woody Allen movie recently that had an entire gay subplot surgically removed in the cinemas.
That's the problem with cuts, you don't know what they're getting rid of!

We in the USA don't have censors (at least not government censors) but we do have a ratings system that goes from G (all audiences can see the movie without restriction) to NC-17 (no one under 17 can be admitted to the movie). That said, rating of G and especially NC-17 tend to be box office poison, so movie studios will cut or add to movies in order to avoid such ratings. For that matter R (no one under 17 admitted without a parent or guardian) also tends to cause movies to do less well at the box office.

It gets a bit absurd at times. For example a movie can be rated PG-13 (probably overall the most profitable rating) if it has less than three uses of the word, "fuck" or its derivatives (motherfucker, fuckhead, etc). Three or more uses of "fuck" draw an R rating.

Hell, it would be even greater, if Bruce Banner was their to point out his alcoholism to continue the relationship that started in the Avengers movie.

I will buy The Raid on dvd for sure, and there were a few pick-my-feet-off-the-floor-in-sympathetic-pain moments. The biggest ones were the landing on the back already mentioned, and realizing the fate of one minion during the prep for the next minion: he didn't get his neck snapped... OUR HERO DROPPED HIS NECK ONTO THE JAGGED "LOWER JAW" OF THE EXPLODED DOOR.

For dvd, I'm very behind but finally got to enjoy Tintin as much at home as I had in the theater. I liked the BTS of Spielberg in the volume, getting used to the gear and tools, and Peter Jackson collaborating a world away, but I would've loved a commentary track.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, for five bucks I got Sucker Punch on bluray and don't know what everyone's complaining about. I expected hot chicks kicking special effect ass and got it. I thought it was a hoot.

Maybe this goes in the teevee thread, but I've avoided watching SHERLOCK season two on PBS since learning they have been horribly edited. I've seen them already, but will wait for dvd for a rewatch.

So I went to the "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," about British pensioners living in a shabby Indian hotel. Meant for older folks, I suspect, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Warning: I have a burning love for musicals and taste that may be suspect, but damn, do I want to see this crazy melodramatic spectacle:

@ J. Brennan - you know what's mad? I hate the stage play. To me, it's bloody awful. [I also hate Phantom of The Opera: so hate me now fans and we shall forever be at an understanding.]
HOWEVER, I love film musicals and that looks interesting. Their are only 2 possible faults I can see in that trailer: Eddie Redmayne & Amanda Seyfried, neither of whom can act their way out of an invisible, quantum-phasing bag. Even when there's nothing in their way, they get stuck inside it all big eyed and half-smiled. I won't look that up too much because a part of me [the part that was once the boyfriend to a relation of its executive producer, Cameron MacinTosh's] wants it to succeed.

@ city creed - I think Drive's 80s aesthetic is both a political and a cinematic commentary: it uses the 80s aesthetic as a filter that we see through but also one that we knowingly see [because he includes small mobile phones and an iPhone/smartphone, we know it's not the 80s for all its 80s looks] because there is a lot in American life and movie-making that hasn't changed since the 80s; people are still isolated by urban living; many are still insistent on free-market capitalism as the only way; movies are still made that tell us we want fast cars, faster women, and bigger explosions. I think the director is saying, "This doesn't work; it didn't work through the 80s filter and it doesn't work now even though we've hindsight. Here is the unfortunate cycle in all its terrible wonder." Am I, as a European, bias toward this view? Perhaps. As a film goer, I'd like to think he's commenting but I can only know through American films, I don't know American life. Any USA-icans want to pitch in their 2cents?
