    Saw How I Spent my Summer Vacation (aka Get The Gringo) tonight.
    It was fun, Gibson has always been a good actor and has screen charisma to share. How he gets through his days in the weird prison are really quite entertaining and his solution to a few problems had me laughing in the cinema.

    Not the best action film you'll ever see, but it would make a good double bill with Payback.

    Actually, even in the first movie theirs scenes of Tony around alcohol. It's obvious they are leading up to it, wonder if it will be in IM 3
    Favreau said in the commentary for IM2 that the birthday party scene was the closes Marvel would let him get to doing Demon in a Bottle. They'd actually made him cut a couple of other drunk Tony scenes. And with IM 3 apparently pulling a lot from Extremis and maybe finally having The Mandarin, I don't see how they can squeeze in Tony coming to grips with his alcoholism and doing it justice.

    Saw Burton's 'Dark Shadows' yesterday. I'd like to say it was good/bad, but unfortunately it was cut to the point the plot made no sense at all. Seriously. It wasn't just a little disjointed, the censors had viciously gutted the poor fucker beyond any recognition. The kicker? How do I know so much content had been ripped out? A great deal of it was shown in the trailer, in that very same goddamn cinema. I don't think the movie's going to win any awards, but still. Exceptionally frustrating.
    There are many interesting and worthwhile parts to living in the middle east. Censorship is not one of them. I hate it so, so much.

    Conversely, the same afternoon, we also watched How I Spent my Summer Vacation, which the censors had not touched. I agree with RobSpalding above. Surprisingly enjoyable!

    I believe Dark Shadows hasn't been cut very much in the UK, and it was still pretty incoherent.

    Sometimes there's stuff in trailers that don't end up in the finished film, especially if the editors and the director are trying to make out something coherent out of a total mess of content...

    As far as I know, the trailers are mainly made by companies that are specialized in stuff like that, no the actual film editor.

    A review I read commented that Burton and Depp are too chummy to produce good creative work together: they need to be kept apart.

    I've heard many directors complain about the trailers for their films (spoilers, wrong tone), so they've gotta be supervised by Marketing, not Creative.

    When the BBFC say it was passed with no cuts made, it doesn't mean no cuts. The studio will often cut before submitting things it knows they'll be asked to cut anyway.

    I don't know. I have kind of a soft spot for Sleepy Hollow (1999), but yeah, a good bid of the rest of it fell a bit short.

    @Vornaskotti That's true. On the other hand, the censors over here are a little heavy handed and care not if their cuts are rather intrusive. It always feels as if someone's just torn a fistful of film out of the reel in disgust. You can always tell a cut, which makes it even more annoying. They generally get rid of unmarried couples kissing and nudity. I re-watched a Woody Allen movie recently that had an entire gay subplot surgically removed in the cinemas.
    That's the problem with cuts, you don't know what they're getting rid of!

    We in the USA don't have censors (at least not government censors) but we do have a ratings system that goes from G (all audiences can see the movie without restriction) to NC-17 (no one under 17 can be admitted to the movie). That said, rating of G and especially NC-17 tend to be box office poison, so movie studios will cut or add to movies in order to avoid such ratings. For that matter R (no one under 17 admitted without a parent or guardian) also tends to cause movies to do less well at the box office.

    It gets a bit absurd at times. For example a movie can be rated PG-13 (probably overall the most profitable rating) if it has less than three uses of the word, "fuck" or its derivatives (motherfucker, fuckhead, etc). Three or more uses of "fuck" draw an R rating.

    The BBFC, when they do require a cut, will often say in great detail what was removed, if the entry is one of the 'expanded' ones.
