Yeah, I keep DVRing it, but I've only gotten through 3 episodes. I think the found footage conceit works very well for the The Undiscovered Country segments and recordings of Bruce Greenwood (Which are the bits of the show that really pulled me in). As for the rest of the show... I wish they'd drop the shakeycam/everything is being recorded! bit. I do hope the show picks up, there are some interesting threads of mystery and the supernatural.

Then again, maybe I'm just hoping to catch the thrill of the unknown I got when I first watched Lost.

I'm enjoying The River a hell of a lot more than, say, Alcatraz. But I've been a Bruce Greenwood fan since Nowhere Man - and he got much more air time this week. The found-footage trope is, shall we say, inconsistently adhered to (bluntly, most of the Slenderman vlogs do it better), and the non-Greenwood cast aren't always great... but there's a lot to enjoy, I think. Not least the extremely pretty engineer's daughter.

Yeah, Bruce Greenwood's usually entertaining to watch but I cannot tell you why I'm enjoying The River. I'm not a fan of horror/supernatural stuff in the slightest and some of its character feel like they've been lifted from The Big Book of Stereotypical TV Character, especially the wife. Having said that, I'm almost to the point where I'm wishing there were more than 8 episodes.

Maybe it's the dearth of much else which has caught my attention this season that's making it seem better than it really is? Not been keeping up with Olivia, Peter and Walter, simply because I save them all for a weekend-long Fringe-a-thon at the end of each season; same for Walking Dead.

Terra Nova, very meh and more than adequately dissected (and rightly so) here already.

I'm sticking with Grimm - just wish they hadn't chosen Barbie's Ken as the lead actor. Even tried Once Upon a Time but...yeah.

Loved American Horror Story and interested to see where/how they take it in season 2.

As for Alcatraz... Another JJ Abrams-inspired, potentially never-ending trail of tantalising-looking but, so far, nutrition-free breadcrumbs to try and follow. The way Lost <del >imploded into a stinking ball of putrescence</del> developed beyond season 2 kind of put me off anything along those lines. But, because I'm an idiot (and there's nothing else to switch to), I'll probably keep watching till it's cancelled.

Oh bugger, how could I forget? The absolute gem from (semi) recent TV has been season 2 of Haven. Lots going on, answers regularly provided to previous WTF-moments yet, even though the "answers" only serve to provoke more head-scratching, this one feels like it actually knows where it's ultimately going.

Warning: I have been known to be full of shit about these things on a regular basis.

Engineering my day so I can sit down for The Professionals. For our American cousins this was a late 70s/early 80s British police/spy series based around a fictional department called CI5. It stands up well to rewatching, mainly because of the chemistry between the two main leads Lewis Collins as Bodie, and Martin Shaw as Doyle. Also notable for excessive use of the British cult car the Ford Capri
The Professionals

Apart from that watching reruns of Quantum Leap.

@ Lazarus99: For me, Grimm's a lot better; both in its characters and how it tries to get over the stories it's trying to tell. It's by no means perfect but OUAT (before I gave up on it) lacked focus and didn't exploit any of the potential strengths it had (Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin should've been enough of a hook). I was hoping for something akin to Fables but it missed that by a country mile.

Without sounding like a complete addict, it's rare for me to give up on a show once I've watched a few episodes - as much habit as genuine interest, admittedly - but there are still 10 episodes of OUAT sitting unwatched, emitting a low-level Meh-field.

However, here is my problem with the last ep,

DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE NOT CAUGHT UP.

To me, one of the most compelling parts of the early comics, is when Carl shoots Shane. I don't mind change, that's the nature of the beast, it really helped give tension to the story. Grimm is fun, not because of the lead, but because of all the fairy tale character's reactions to the lead. All the normal humans are usually really boring. Well, except Sergeant Wu, he gets some goofy lines. Monroe is by far the most interesting character.

I actually like Once Upon a Time, but I'm also a huge sucker for fairy tales. Robert Carlyle's Rumpelstiltskin is by far the best/most interesting character, and once you get past the first couple episodes, you would find that he is actually involved (usually indirectly) with most of the characters, as is the Evil Queen. So far we have a good idea of what Rumpelstiltskin's past/background is, but his plans and intentions are quite murky.
I think he's been planning something before he even gave the Evil Queen/Regina the dark curse and we won't find out his true intentions for a long time.
As for the Evil Queen/Regina, her intentions are obvious, but her past has some serious holes that hasn't been dealt with yet. (I'm hoping it's a yet.) The entire obsession with true love is a bit gag-worthy, but otherwise the story is generally interesting.

Just finished watching the finale of Alcatraz and several thoughts immediately come to mind [No spoilers here btw]:

1: The premise is good and the cast, for the most part, are fine. Some of the cast are actually even better than fine and manage to rescue several episodes by virtue of their brief appearances.

But this then begs the questions:

a) Coming in as a mid-season replacement, how is it possible to include so many fillers in a 13 episode run?
b) If you're not going to round it all off neatly (which is to be expected since you've only run for 13 episodes) why hold back so much for so long and then blurt your load in the last forty-five minutes?

c) Why cast Sam Neill and then get him to play a one note character?

OK, c) was more of a general question but I still stand by it.

I'd like to see this renewed though I doubt it will happen judging from the ratings. The fact you could probably cut about five episodes from the middle of this run and not lose anything other than an absolutely awful episode, ('Paxton Petty' which features the worst writing I've ever seen in an Abrams related project,) is not the best way to keep your quirky detective show on the air. As stated above I'd like to see this renewed because the last few episodes really picked the pace up again and the central characters from the flashbacks (Jonny Coyne's, Warden James in particular) are fantastic. Unfortunately, I think this one may go south with very little fanfare. Ho-hum, at least I still have a few episodes of Fringe before that possibly gets cancelled as well.

I tried to go back and watch The Shield, which ran for the same length of time and was massively hyped. It's good, but it just can't match The Wire in terms of narrative and social commentary. However, you do get to see how much Walton Goggins has evolved as an actor if you compare the first season of The Shield to Justified. He was excellent in The Shield, but Justified has allowed him to surpass the role that made a lot of people love him in the first place.

What made /The Wire/ distinctive, now that I really come to think on it, is that the main character and focus of the story truly was the city and its institutions, power structures and roles. The individual players stories and characters move around and through the city, while constantly running up against the limits of their power as individuals. It really could be used as a beautiful illustration of Foucault's ideas about power, discipline and institutionality as the 20th century's old, monolithic, centralized power structures - centralized education, government, police, journalism, unions - wind up in turn showing their ultimate futility and insufficiency.

I was unable to watch Lost Girl due to personal prejudices related to the hair and make-up effects used on the apparently 'gothy' friend(s). Either get someone who knows how to do Goth make-up properly (preferably a Goth), or don't make that the character's image in the first place. Very minor and absolutely nothing to do with the story, but it p*ssed me right off. My wife being a 'traditional' goth (Bauhaus/Siouxsie/The Cure/The Mission etc) I know what I'm talking about when it comes to the make-up/style side of things on this matter. On a vaguely pertinent note though, the lead doesn't engage me. She appears to have an immobile face and try as I did (with the first series) I just couldn't care less what happened to her.

As far as other series go I'm going to have to give, The Almighty Johnsons, a chance, if only to answer the questions: Why is Odin younger than everyone else? Why do they all look like they walked out of an advert for a supermarket's own clothing brand? Why the hell were the Norse Gods reincarnated in New Zealand (beyond the obvious answer of, 'that's where the series was created')?

And finally: I've been watching, The Finder. I have mixed feelings so far. I like the character of, Walter Sherman and there have been some truly bats**t moments (Episode 6, Little Green Men) that have been rather fun. But the whole issue of Willa's Romany heritage and 'family' rules/laws just feels shoe-horned in. She's an interesting character without adding in
arranged marriages and the associated social politics.
And I do fear Willa's role will become that of, 'We need someone who can do this, but we don't know anyone who... oh, Willa, you can do that.... really?' If you haven't seen it yet you will understand my concerns after about the fourth or fifth episode.
Also, tiny bug-bear:
Walter's nonsensical re-creations of 'this week's scenario' with toys and random rubbish bother me because of the amount of time they would actually take to set-up when he's usually on some form of time limit.
Still, over all it's a fun ride and I'm intrigued as to how the hell they're going to develop it.

@Lazarus - I couldn't stand five minutes of Lost Girl, and perhaps that makes me unqualified to judge it fairly. Like many things on SyFy (shudder) I see/read a great concept about a series, and then it turns out to be shite. I'm not sure if it's that bad humor/dialogue that I find so distasteful, that self-consciously nerdy "we know this is terrible dialogue but I'm saying it anyway" that SyFy seems to use on every show I've ever seen, but Lost Girls seems like more of the same.

As for latest Fringe... loved the emotional beats, but there's a huge plothole which buggers up the ep for me...

So, let me get this straight:
Jones' plan was having a Cortexiphan Kid on each side, one of whom activated the earthquakes by psi, connecting their 'vibrations' to their altverse counterpart, said connection providing the impetus for the world-merging.

OK, fine. It's Fringe, I'll jump the pseudoscience. But...

Why did nobody suggest finding the Cortexiphan Kids on one side and either transporting them to the other side, or just killing them?

Olivia knows all their names. There's six hours to find them. And they've already got Nick Lane in custody. At worst, it's sacrificing (or, if having them all on one side works, mildly inconveniencing) 27 people to save 14 billion.

This occurred to me as soon as Walter described Jones' plan. I'm certainly not as bright as a Walter. And it bugged me for the rest of the episode.
