    Whole Foods is testing a Kinect-controlled motorized shopping cart that can follow a shopper aroudn the supermarket whiel also keepign tack of what is in it.

    It'll be interesting to see if it can really cope with the relaively crowded and unpredictable shopping environment.

    However, that solution *would* work really well at the Wegmans groceries in Upstate NY at the times I used to go to them. At midnight - 5am, most of those places are completely deserted.

    If you could pilot your virtual shopping cart around the *idealized* version of the store, and then later on have that fulfilled in reality by a robot that retraced your actions and steps, that would provide a much better solutions. True robot-controlled carts won't fly, there is too much risk of liability and unpleasantness.

    A man who informed police when he found child abuse images on his computer has not been allowed to be alone with his daughter for four months.
    Nigel Robinson from Hull said he called police after trying to download music but instead finding pornographic images on his laptop last November.
    As a result social services said he "should not have unsupervised access with his own or other children".

We have learned to worry about asteroids and supervolcanoes, but the more-likely scenario, according to Nick Bostrom, a professor of philosophy at Oxford, is that we humans will destroy ourselves.

    Someone in Norway has been looking through some old research data on the effects of LSD on alcoholism. Apparently a little acid goes a long way toward reducing levels of 'alcohol misuse', 'It's as good as anything we've got' according to one of the researchers.

    It's a funny old world.

    Iraqui teenagers stoned to death for "emo" haircuts.


    Iraq's Moral Police released a chilling statement on the interior ministry's website condemning the "emo phenomenon" among Iraqi youth, disturbingly declaring its intent to "eliminate" the trend.

    "The 'Emo phenomenon' or devil worshiping is being followed by the Moral Police who have the approval to eliminate [the phenomenon] as soon as possible since it's detrimentally affecting the society and becoming a danger," the statement read.

    "They wear strange, tight clothes that have pictures on them such as skulls and use stationary that are shaped as skulls. They also wear rings on their noses and tongues, and do other strange activities," it continued.

    Religious extremists caught onto the interior ministry statement, and have been harassing and killing teenagers with Western or "emo" appearances.

    A group of armed men dressed in civilian clothing led dozens of teenagers to secluded areas a few days ago, stoned them to death, and then disposed their bodies in garbage dumpsters across the capital, according to activists.
