This is so effing true. I was FAR less nervous about the Russian border bureaucracy for the first time than I'm going to US and having to go through immigration. Especially traveling as a journalist you'll really get the feel that you are entering the country of the Freedom of Speech

"Americans may be surprised by the conclusions of a 2006 survey by the U.S. Travel Association, which found that foreign travelers were more afraid of United States immigration officials than of terrorism or crime."

When security forces of a Canadian mining company brutally evicted Mayan families from their villages in Guatemala, eleven women were raped, a community leader was killed, and a young man paralyzed. (...)

The victims have filed a lawsuit in Canada, where HudBay’s headquarters are located. But HudBay is asking that the court turn over the lawsuit to Guatemala, where its weak courts are likely to let them go free. Experts say that the ruling could have massive reverberations beyond Canadian borders -- a win for the plaintiffs could force HudBay and other multinationals to clean up their acts abroad.

This link is to a fundraising campaign to cover the legal costs for the villagers' lawsuit.

@Vornaskotti: US immigration is a horrible nightmare. After passing through LAX on my way to Toronto in 2007, I've refused to travel through the USA as a matter of course, and I advise my visiting friends and family to fly in directly to Vancouver and take a domestic flight cross-country.

Girl Raped, Set Afire and Left for Dead, but Survives

Oksana Makar, 18, said that on March 9, she was invited by two young men, ages 21 and 23, to their friend’s apartment, where the three men allegedly gang-raped her, tried to choke her to death, wrapped her in a sheet, took her to a construction site, dumped her in a pit and set her on fire, according to the Kyiv Post.

The next day a man heard moaning coming from the construction site. He saw something moving under a charred sheet, and found Makar barely alive. He called the police, and Makar was rushed to the hospital. Fifty-five percent of her skin is gone, her kidneys were completely burned, and one of her arms and both her feet had to be amputated, according to the Kyiv Post.

You know what, world? Fuck you.

    Jebus, for fucking real?

"This week the Georgia State legislature debated a bill in the House, that would make it necessary for a woman to carry a stillborn baby until she 'naturally' goes into labor just as, according to Representative Terry England, pregnant cows and pigs do."

    @ Vornaskotti:

Then, at the other end of the gynaecological imbecility spectrum, comes this...

Doctor Insists Woman Is Pregnant When She Actually Has a Giant Tumor
A woman in Barcelona, Spain, is taking legal action against a hospital where doctors misdiagnosed a 24-pound, cancerous uterine tumor as a late-term pregnancy.

But, before any and all hope is completely evaporated and the banging of heads on walls echoes round the civilised world

    From Slate, via Jezebel

    Rise of the Single-Woman Voter
The single woman, or “swingle,” as pollsters are now calling her, is already one of the largest voting blocs at 55 million, and that number is growing by almost 1 million voters a year—faster than any other group of voters broken out in the polls. Last year, single women made up one-quarter of voters overall—about the same number as self-identified white evangelical Christians. And if Obama’s strategy for courting these women works long term, pollsters say, single women might actually become the Democrats’ equivalent of the evangelicals—a reliable base for future elections.
The rise of the single-woman voter exposes the Republicans deepest vulnerability. Republicans continue to run 1992-era family-values campaigns aimed at a base which has transformed radically over the last 20 years. Red states have the lowest marriage and highest divorce rates, while it’s the so-called “urban elites” who favor long, stable marriages.

@Foamhead - after all the blatantly mysogenistic behaviour of the US republicans recently, it would be gloriously satisfying if they were kept out of power by the single-women voter bloc.

Have you heard the 9-1-1 calls? Kid was begging for his life and yet it was "self-defense". I tell you, if I had head-explodey powers there'd be a lot fewer people in FL.

Margaret Thatcher depicted as a Hitler-admiring leader who wants to destroy the working class in a Russian pirated version of "The Iron Lady"
Speaking to a crowd of supporters, Margaret Thatcher, as played by Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady, explains what she would do as prime minister: "Crush the working class, crush the scum, the yobs."
At least that is a scene from a pirated version of the film in Russia, which has been inadvertently reviewed by one of the country's top film critics without realising that some rather pointed changes to the script had been made

Not often I do the old "self-hyping" thing, but I'm rather pleased with this week's column at Bleeding Cool:

The Future Has Stopped Making Sense: LEE BARNETT IS THE ADULT IN THE ROOM

“It’s January 2001. Where’s my fucking jet pack?” — Warren Ellis

Given how many stories in comic books involve time travel, a significant number set in the future, it’s telling how often we get it wrong. And I’m not even talking about the far future, thousands of years hence. No, we’re equally incompetent about the near future.

Georgia Republican Compares Women to Cows, Pigs, And Chickens

A speech from a Georgia Republican state representative surfaced last week in which he compared women seeking abortions of stillborn fetuses to cows and pigs.
State Rep. Terry England was speaking in favor of HB 954, which makes it illegal to obtain an abortion after 20 weeks even if the woman is known to be carrying a stillborn fetus or the baby is otherwise not expected to live to term.
