Title: The Immortality Drive
Word: tachyon
Length: 200 words exactly

The archivist held himself upright as a matter of pride. Lean by nature, mean by inclination, he was equally feared and detested by the authors who brought their works for inclusion in the vast archives.

The author who now held up her work in supplication was an actual human and the archivist restrained a shudder of contempt that aeons ago, his forebears had come from the same planet. Of course, his ancestors had shown a modicum of taste and left that dirtball as soon as they were able.

The tachyon dissemination drive was a marvel of technology, colours swirling around it; any item placed upon it was transmitted through all time and space, placed in every library through recorded history.

The archivist glanced at the work offered for inclusion. The cover offended him, as did the author, and no doubt the contents.

The archivist barely noticed the author running towards the drive and turned his head just in time to see the author place her hand upon the drive... and disappear.

It never worked, he knew. Another author who would never be read, never even be remembered. It was the work that survived, the archivist knew. Only the work.

The Rules

You’ve got until evening on Saturday 17th March, say midnight British time, (4pm Pacific) to put up either a one panel spot illustration or a two page comic book depiction of the entire story. The art can be pencilled, inked, coloured, lettered... entirely up to you. But ART ONLY – no story ideas, or suggestions. This is an opportunity to showcase your art and storytelling abilities.

We’ll announce on Sunday 18th March the winner who then gets to pick a new four word title and word, and I’ll write a new story which will go up Monday 19th March... which will start the whole thing running again for the following two weeks.

If possible, please can you make sure you've got your email address registered in your profile so we can email you to let you know you're challenging me next time (just in case you're not able to visit that weekend).

Wonderful pieces, all... and if I was going for a book cover, @dnewling, yours would have taken the prize no question. Also loved the instriction manual and Olaf's is gorgeous; would love to see another work from you.

However, as a spot illo for this story, I have to go with this from @256. Wonderful.

I don't think I've got an email address for you, @256, so I'll ask here for the next challenge (which I'll write tomorrow morning.)
