I've been trying to get myself to go to the gym for almost a month. I haven't yet but I did get over a tiny step - I weighed myself. I don't weigh as much as I feared. Ok. Now still I have way more flab than anyone ever needs and am horribly out of shape - so that sustaining a breath even when I'm not moving is tough and gets downright embarrassing after any exertion. But it's good to get a little bit of handle of where I really am instead of where it feels like I am.

A meh thing, more than a good thing, but a thing that moves me forward.

+ I'm graduating this summer. Finally. I'm halfway done with my MA thesis, and I only have one exam left for my minor in Contemporary History. I am, to say the least, happier than in a long while.
+ Booked a trip to England with three of my dearest friends. The plan of action is London-Oxford-Worcester-Bath-Salisbury-London.
+ I've lost 10 kilos of weight. Got still another 20 to lose, but I'm slowly getting back to where I was when I still did martial arts.
    + My hair's a mess and I love it. :)

High fives and hugs all round!

I've always had bad Fu when it comes to Radiohead, despite the near religious fervour with which I regard them. This morning I managed to get tickets though and well... That just kicks off the weekend beautifully. If the gods are truly smiling down on me then there will be my copy of Mass Effect 3 waiting for me when I visit my parent's place later and my aunt will love the earrings I had made for her and pay for them really bloody quickly so they're not sitting on my credit card for too long and everything will be okay.

Also, I didn't get a promotion at work this week which is AWESOME! Because although it would have been a bit more money, the way my company works it would have just meant more work and more responsibility on top of the never ending pile of stuff I have to do already and that didn't sound like fun at all. As much as my co-workers rather gratifyingly defer to me a lot of the time, I'm not sure that would continue if I was officially in charge of everyone. I am quite happy to just get on with my job and not worry about them not doing theirs. Genuine relief.

Erm. It seems I've been hovering around someone who falls into my kryptonite region of Secretly Awesome. You know, the kind who are quiet and upon further investigation have spent their windfall funds on Nino Rota soundtracks.

Just got some free beer samples from an importer. Also three free glasses with my favorite pink elephant on!

ALSO I've been invited as a guest to a beer pairing dinner. 3-4 courses with accompanying beer.

Feeling kind of awesome. And am feeling that it may be time to get writing work for newspapers/magazines. We'll see.

Rode my bike to and from work without either: fainting, my legs falling off, or changing gears. So despite not losing any weight even with diet and nightly rope jumping (or losing only as much weight as I have put on since August, it's hard to tell), my stamina is at least significantly improved, so that's good.

I just uploaded that short story anthology I'd been working on. My stress levels are off the scale.

    Did it.

    Didn't suck

    Even got a few laughs...

Now have things to rework and find some places to do it again, and again, and again...

I saw Sleep No More last night. It was... phenomenal. I won't try to explain it because ahhhhhh, but if I had more money, I would go see it at least twice more.

If you don't know what it is, read the NYTimes and NYMag reviews of it. It was a stunning experience.

My date went on at some length about the experience of cooking and eating a whole pig's head with her friends.

    That's what I call a BONUS MULTIPLIER.

Tonight I went and saw SQUAREPUSHER. It was fucking glorious.

Then I went out for a drink, came home drunkish and stonedish, to watch more of Blake's 7 for the first time in my life. I'm up to the sixth episode, and it's everything I wanted. Like Tom Baker era Doctor Who minus the time travel, crossed with Farscape minus the Henson influence. And in the second episode, Brian Blessed plays a cult leader on a dead planet with a ponytailed hawk of sorts.

Soon after there were lettuce ewoks. And it turns out reading the credits of that episode, that one of these cabbagy dwarf aliens was played by none other than Deep Roy. (hobbit, killer chinese puppet, oomplah loompa)

Seriously, Blake's 7 is my awesome vile hug recently. Its so perfect at what it is.

and Squarepusher? Oh YES. No other music makes me lose my mind like Squarepusher. i floated in utter joy.

    HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED:

Turns out they (Air Berlin) will not let you board a plane without a return ticket. Which is nice to hear one hour prior to departure, and not even in Helsinki but in Berlin, when your luggage is already on the plane to NYC. Forget about telling them about your plan of going to Canada by bus after New York. Ha ha, nope. Commence PLAN B.

What you CAN do is get yourself a flex ticket, and then cancel that for a refund once you're in the country. Yes, the same people suggested this. (I guess they're more concerned with the shit I'd have to take in immigration, but still I larfed.) Problem is, these tickets are expensive, a hair over 900 euros in this case. And while I do have some sort of a budget on this trip, that weren't it. So, I post a frantic message about the situation on FB.

10 seconds later I get a call from a friend saying the necessary funds are on their way.

    Christ, I have awesome friends.

Of course, then I had to explain to the nice man from immigration as to why I have a return flight three months from now, and I was sure that was the last nail. But no.

Long story short: I'm in Brooklyn, full of NYC pizza and cocktails to ease the jetlag. Giddy with it all. Now I sleep, 42 hours up is finally getting to me. More stories tomorrow, as well as meetup thread shenanigans.

Goddamn I fucked up. Should have been doing better rounds. Instead, an inmate got jumped on the rec yard, and got his face busted in by the Tangos weilding a sock full of batteries.

I'm lucky he just needs stitches. I didn't see or hear a thing.

So, I'm taking it for what it is: a wake up call. I need to step up my game. I'm working a different housing unit as today is the beginning of a new quarter, and we all are starting different posts today.

I'm working on the unit with all of the inmates who do all of the work in the institution; and they have access to tools and equipment and stuff, so I'm doing more rounds, performing better searches. I have to be a little less of a nice guy and a little bit more of a prick for a while.

I'm lucky that guy wasn't stabbed or hospitalized, or worse yet, killed.

But I garauntee something like that won't happen again; not on my watch.

@taphead - immigration takes one way tickets into the country VERY seriously. It's a big red flag for them for people getting into the country who plan to overstay their visas and just live here forever. I read some guy's story on the Burning Man forums about how he was flying in for BM, but was getting a ride back from someone (coming into US from canada, btw) so he just had a one way ticket, and I guess he had an airbrush with him cos he was gonna be spray painting people and their clothes for free at the burn, but they assumed that he was going to be trying to use it to make a living out of his own living room, and didn't let him come in, and restricted him from coming in in the future. Or something, I forget the details.

@Pooka - come to Colorado. I'm serious. The winters are not as bad as you think. Fairly dry climate. Great schools. And this town needs a better comic book shop. Also, I know a LOT of gamers that are always looking for new peeps. And I'd like all my family in one place. :)

So. Parents decided to drop in next weekend - without asking.
However, they are giving my stressed-out-by-the-small-apartment boy-cat a vacation at their house for a few months (yay!).

I got an extraordinary offer twice in the space of a week.
Which is way nicer than getting hit on by stoned asshats reading out loud from my book over my shoulder. Guh.

Also, my friend broke up with her boyfriend. (no sad dance here)
And my other friend may move in with me over the summer which means that I get to live in a bigger apartment that won't stress out the boy-cat.

    Standard operating status...
