#5minutes

Explosions always win, especially if the person telling the story was involved in some way, so definitely go with that.

As for the Dirk Gently bit, if I'm not mistaken, the fact that it sounds like a bad porn name was part of why Adams chose it for the character. Could be interesting, but H2G2 related conversations have a bad habit of circling in on themselves and turning into endless debates on the significance of the number 42. A pleasant way to waste an evening, but rarely productive.

As for how you take your coffee, if you can beat the maker of this stuff, you might have a chance. Otherwise, "So, this one time, I kinda sorta blew up a Land Rover."

A cable pinned like that will run ethernet at 10Mbps (which only really uses those two pair). I'm not sure about 100Mbps (I think it'll work), but I know it won't work for 1Gbps, which requires all four pair. I've seen pinouts like that used when there weren't enough pairs in the wall or pipe for all the places that ethernet was needed, so they'd split four pairs between two ports. Or it might have been used for some kind of phone. Either way, a cable with only two pair is cheaper to buy than actual CAT3 or CAT5, and a great way to save a few pennies if you're the short-sighted sort.

 #gardening

BACKGROUND INFO: Right, so...a bit of background info...for the past 15 years or so, due to neglect (work and other stuff prevent us from doing maintenance) our backyard turned in to a rainforest of weeds. Since the use of weedkiller has become illegal here, dealing with the bastards has been a pretty impossible task. Last year we attempted to do it, though it was a bit late in the season so it was like for every one we pulled out ten more would show up.

This year, with the weather the way it is, I'm actually able to do some fucking work in there and ideally by the end of next month I would like a raised bed garden there (where I plan to grow vegetables, flowers and hops).

For reference, here's what the backyard is currently looking like. The things that look like bits of hay are indeed dead weeds from last year. Over the summer we put a tarp over the lawn which did a good job of killing it all. Now it's just clearing up.

ACTUAL QUESTIONS: So the first question is how to get things going after picking up all the crap. I'm thinking raking the ground, digging in the area I'd like my raised bed and planting grass seeds in other areas. Is that a good way to go?

Second question is how do I prevent these bastard weeds from growing again? Is there a natural planting product that stunts the growth of weeds but is fine with everything else?

 #gardening

I'm a qualified horticulturalist, but my training was in temperate zone gardening (in Sydney, where there's no snow in winter and it's warm for most of the year). I can give you some solid basics, but you should refer to a growing guide for whatever crop you intend planting.

1) Dig up the ground with a nice heavy mattock if it's compacted, then break it up with a hoe. No need to go crazy digging down deep, just chop up the topsoil until it's nice and crumbly. If you're feeling extremely ambitious and energetic, get rid of any rocks, slabs of concrete, junk etc and have it taken away in a dumpster.

2) Raised beds are almost always the way to go. You get better drainage and soil depth, and a contained area for growing your crop. Bricks make a pretty good edging for your raised bed, and you can sink a row of them at ground level as a mowing strip if your lawn comes to the edge of the bed.

3) Dig in lots and lots of well rotted compost. Organic matter always, always improves your soil.

4) Mulching the garden bed with straw is pretty effective for keeping the weeds at bay. Check your growing guide though, because some mulches increase humidity and can cause fungal growth.

5) Optional: Get yourself a pH testing kit. You can treat acid soil with powdered lime, and garden sulphur will neutralise soil that's too alkaline. I've never grown hops, but I think they're one of those fussy crops that need to be grown at a fairly narrow pH range.

I can probably point you in the right direction if there's anything else you need to know.

 #needmobiledevice

There's a substantial trade-off (pocketability vs. image size) between the 7" and 10" devices, so I'd encourage you to figure out which you really prefer before buying.

The iPad is going to give you the most games (and other apps) to choose from, followed by the Galaxy. The book-seller tablets are also based on Android, but it's customized, so they simply aren't going to have as much available in that area.

Not a technical issue, but... if it comes down to B&N vs. Amazon, I have problems with Amazon's censorship policies (not as bad as Apple, but still troublesome), so all else being equal, I'd encourage you to consider the Nook before the Kindle.

As far as I know, none of the cell-enabled devices have contracts attached to the service. But they have data limits and streaming video over 3G can get expensive, so I'd recommend going with a wifi-only model if you can.

 #onlinebackups

I don't trust "cloud" services for backup. 1) They could up and vanish, or simply lose my data, and if that happens all the breach-of-contract lawsuits in the world won't bring your data back. 2) There is no real assurance of privacy; some of them have been known to snoop, or to hand over people's data just because someone with a badge asked nicely.

Instead I use a hard drive connected to my home network (I built something myself, but you can do it with something like a Pogo Plug), where I dump backups of everything on my computer. OS X's Time Machine feature makes this brain-dead easy on my Mac; there's gotta be something for Windows that's in the same league, but you'll probably have to pay extra for it. The backup drive is hidden away in my house so a thief isn't likely to find it and take it. It'd take an honest-to-god search warrant for anyone else to get at it. The one thing it doesn't do is protect me in case of a disaster that takes out the whole house, which is a pretty low-probability thing, really. For off-site backup, and to protect against the backup drive failing. I make an encrypted copy of that every so often, and stash it at a friend's house. Nobody I don't trust 100% is involved.

(I also use Dropbox, but only for synching work in progress between the computers I use. I treat it as a file-transfer service, not as storage.)

No good backing up your laptop files to your media server if someone breaks in and steal them both.

If you don't do this, you will suffer for it. It might be decades, but it will happen. #GuitarWanking

I've recently started playing guitar in a band again and it's going well. But I used to play better. Or at least, I knew some secrets, passed down to me by the guitar teacher I had when I was at school, which outlined in really simple terms which chords were in which keys, or how to work out keys from chords, and then which scales went with those chords or keys, or something. Like, just... the main one, then a relative one, which was the same really, then a minor one which also worked but sounded sad, or something.

I can't really remember this kind of info any more, but I used to have it laid out really simply. I can't now find anything that puts it quite so simply and helpfully as that. I've tried a few guitar books and websites, but they're either just really basics like open chords, or heavy theory.

That sheet I used to have pretty much let me play anything I wanted, and whilst I sorta can work out bits of it all by ear, I haven't got that great an ear, and having it again, or just the basic 'how-to-work-it-out' info would really be useful.

There's got to be some musicians here that know what I mean, without complicating it.

Cheers.

 #onlinebackups

I stopped using Dropbox for anything serious after they left the back door open to anyone and everyone a year or two back. I simply don't trust their security.

SpiderOak on the other hand generates encryption keys locally, so even if they did fuck up as badly as Dropbox did, the only data people could access would be encrypted. With SpiderOak you can also tell it what folders you want to backup, whereas Dropbox still only backs up the contents of the one folder (unless they've updated recently).

Oh, and SpiderOak is free, just like Dropbox. But even then it depends on how much you're backing up - if you're doing high quality audio, video or photo then you'll have to pay for enough space for it all.

 #onlinebackups

After a good night's sleep I realised that using Dropbox would require me to either duplicate the files I want to backup, or radically alter my directory structure - neither of which I really want to do. So it looks like Dropbox is out.

I'm currently tossing up between Spideroak, Crashplan and Mozy. One of the things I need to backup are close on 10 years of digital photos, so I'm going to be paying for storage beyond the free allowance each provides no matter which one I choose.

 #onlinebackups

This is a very timely conversation for me. I'm just looking at ways to get more robust and regular with my backups. I'm generating a lot more content now than I was a couple of years ago and I also need home access to work files so I can keep plodding away on things after hours.

Jason mentioned Time Machine. I use Macs as well - a Pro at the studio and a Mini at home, although I'm about to trade up to an iMac - and I got a bit of advice regarding Time Machine from a former colleague who now runs a Mac rescue service. He said not to rely entirely on Time Machine because if your HD totally fails and needs reformatting or replacing, it often does not restore completely.

It's great for quick recovery work, the corrupted/deleted file, the crashed app, but for large-scale recovery he recommends Carbon Copy Cloner. It's free and you can schedule it but you have a lot more control over format and order things are backed up in and how the backups are written than you do with TM. Crucially you can also create a bootable image of your main disk so if that's what's hit the deck, you're up and running again in minutes instead of hours.

SpiderOak looks interesting. My wife swears by DropBox but the single-folder thing is an issue for me. I was considering a kludge workaround using CCC to write only today's changed files to the DB folder, but SpiderOak might be a better solution. I'll also be getting an external HD for monthly backups that I can send home with my Dad so that there's a third remote copy. All my old work is backed up to DVD and my folks have copies as well, but some of the newer stuff - I'd just need one break-in or flood and I'd be screwed.

 #onlinebackups

Another possibility is to roll your own online storage. You can purchase (for most platforms) software such as JungleDisk which will simply allow you to access a chunk of online storage (Amazon, in the case of JungleDisk) as a virtual drive. You can then use whatever encryption and backup software you like to target it.

Amazon's online storage rates are fairly reasonable and predictable. If you use them simply as online storage, then utilize your favorite encryption solution to encrypt your local hard drive (which we all know we probably should be doing anyhow), then one can use a free file sync utility such as SyncBack or an image backup utility such as DriveImageXML to target that as your backup selection. Alternately, you can back up first to an encrypted hard drive, then send an encrypted image of the hard drive offsite by copying it to the cloud drive.

One final alternative would be to utilize a NAS. Network storage servers like the Netgear ReadyNAS or Buffalo LinkStation generally have the ability to do two things: Back themselves up automatically to a USB drive, and sync automatically to another similar NAS unit at a remote location. With a NAS, USB drive backups are generally automatic - just plug it in and forget it. Ideally you use two or more USB drives and rotate one offsite.

Finally, if you have two similar NAS units and an offsite location with high speed access, you can back up one NAS directly to another NAS. This is an ideal solution if you want to back up your office to a home office, or if you can get friends or parents with highspeed to host another NAS for you. The two units will sync files directly between each other over the Internet. This can serve both for backup (long-term retrieval of archived files) and Disaster Recovery, as it will maintain a complete copy of all your current data.

As people said before, though, don't confuse Disaster Recovery with Backup. A complete offsite mirror of your *current* files won't help you if you need to retrieve a file from months ago. Be careful when evaluating your solution so you know how far back their retention allows you to go. Retaining multiple copies can get expensive.

 #comics subscriptions online

One of the side effects of living in the boonies, as beautiful and otherwise lovely these boonies are, is that there really isn't a reliable local comic book shop, the place I ordered from in Duluth wasn't all that reliable either. #niceornasty?#

Writing question. I'm putting together a cookbook for blokes, mostly aimed at twenty-somethings moving out of their parents' home for the first time. I'll be including some general advice as well; about renting, housework, basic finances and record keeping, DIY repairs and keeping a toolkit. I'm talking to Oldhat about doing a section on beer.

I'm also considering adding chapters on weed (cookie and brownie recipes, how to make an apple pipe etc) and home made sex toys (the Cucummer, the Eggplant Fleshlight), but I'm concerned this might jeopardise sales. Is it better to risk it, publish and be damned, or to play it nice and censor out the offensive stuff?

 #brewingwithfruit

I want to make a cherry wheat beer once cherries are in season, and I want to use real fruit instead of extract. I've already gotten some info online and how to do this (steeping during primary fermentation vs secondary, etc.), but it's still a fairly new concept for me. I'm still not sure if I should just toss the fruit in the secondary and hope there's enough alcohol to kill any germs, or pasteurize is at 170 F and hope the pectins don't thicken. #V/VM

So I have been scrounging the internet for copies of V/VM's "V/VM 365" project, "Thirty Six Illegal Inches" and "The Destelbergen Remixes". I know the lovely people here in whitechapel have some esoteric taste in music. I thought maybe someone might have some MP3s they would be willing to torrent somewhere? I'm not asking for anything illegal here, these were all released for FREE back in the day with instructions to share them as you like as long as it was not for profit. Really though, since Vukzid went bye-bye these things have become impossible to find. Which just strikes me as odd, but whatever.

This is a bit of a mundane thing to post to this board, but I figure it can't hurt to ask. Hopefully some kindly person will indulge my desire to bombard my ears with electronic insanity (that is strangely hard to come by).

 @brewingwithfruit!

Okay! So! I'm going to go by Sam Calagione's advice here...AND I'm going on the assumption that we're talking a 5 gallon batch here...

Most of the time, with cherries especially, it's been suggested to crush them and put them in at the end of your 60min boil, but it is IMPORTANT to let them steep for at least 20mins at temperatures between 160 and 170 degrees Fahrenheit.

For sour cherries 10lbs of the suckers can be good. For sweet cherries, 8lbs is suggested. If you'd rather use a puree, do everything the same except halve the volume of cherries you're using.

Now that said, with the beer Alan and I made, we put them in at around...30mins or so in to the boil? They were frozen as well. But it turned out quite fruity. So let it be a lesson that nothing is really set in stone. But for a safe way, above should be fine.

To answer your question on twitter, unless you're planning on making a tripel or an imperial anything with a VERY high ABV, you don't need to worry about adding more yeast. You'll be surprised how much a small amount can do.

Chloroform is a little trippy but carcinogenic and ether is intoxicating but flammable (so don't smoke afterwards - they stopped using it medically because sparks could set off fires inside your lungs), while it can be drunk it is easier to just inhale it - both make you stink like a mad scientist's lab.

On the recipe front a few general tips are often better than recipes - how to tell rice, pasta or potatoes are cooked, for example. Don't bother following a recipe - busk it and adjust the flavour to suit. One handy thing though might be a table of cooking times for joints of meat - always handy at Christmas or Thanksgiving. 10 great ingredients to keep stocked up (like lazy garlic, Worcester sauce, dried mixed herbs, stock cubes, tins of chopped tomatoes, etc.). What struck me when I went away to University was that any awful lot of the guys I'd met had either never cooked or had a few recipes that they stuck to religiously, when what they really needed was a grasp of the basics, which gives you confidence and transferable skills you can bring to new recipes. If you can make a quick and easy spag bol, you can make a chilli with a quick change in a couple of ingredients. Also buy some cheap tupperware boxes, make 2 or 3 times what you'll need and freeze the rest - you will never have to buy ready meals for the times you are too tired, lazy or drunk to cook (Too Drunk to Cook. That was a song wasn't it?).

#brewingwithfruit Thanks Oldhat!! I'll try that. I'd heard numerous things about when you can add the fruit and how that might affect the flavor and so on, and how adding the fruit at the end of the boil might make the overall flavor less fruity than if you add them to to secondary fermentation, but for my first go I'll go ahead and steep my cherries at the end of my boil to ensure that I don't introduce any bacteria that might lead to nasty off-flavors in my beer, knowing that yours turned out really fruity the way you did it.

 #Brewingwithfruit

Okay, so. First off, this sounds like a fantastic idea! I love fruity wheats, and I've had some absolutely lovely cherry beers, most of them wheats or weizens. And using fruit in brewing is really quite easy, at least in my experience.

What oldhat and I did was add all of our fruit, frozen, about half an hour into the boil. I chose to use frozen berries because the heat would crack the skins and let the juice out, but it would do so over time. Steeping the fruit itself, I think, contributed a lot of the tart flavor I wanted in my brew (it was a fruity oatmeal stout... or a fruit stout brewed with oats... still not sure what to classify it as!), so if you want the pucker-factor, I'd say this is a good method. Frozen fruit is also easier to buy in bulk, though that may depends somewhat on what kind of fruit we're talking about.

I left the fruit in for the entire process: boiling, primary, and secondary fermentation, and I even left the fruit in while I was siphoning the beer during bottling. They didn't leave until I scooped them out of the otherwise empty fermentor (which, admittedly, looked pretty gross, but it smelled sorta nice... like oatmeal or porridge with raisins). As long as your fermentor's interior has been well-cleaned, and your bung and airlock are tight, you shouldn't have to worry about the fruit attracting yuckies any more than you normally would with beer, and by the time the alcohol really kicks in, that should do a good job of preserving the fruit. I will admit, I was very concerned about contamination, but we had less to worry about with the fruit stout than I did with a coffee stout I helped make around the same time. I'd say, with the disclaimer that I'm still very much a novice, that fruit should be pretty safe.

I would suggest that, in addition to the cherries, think of some other flavoring that may balance the sweetness and tartness in the beer. Yes, this is what hops are typically for, but I'd still say that fruit needs a partner in beer, just to mellow it out and keep it from becoming a weird mixture of bitter and sour. Most of the bottles of oldhat's and my beer came out fine, but there were a few where I thought very strongly "this needs some vanilla to cool it off." I'd more more than happy to brainstorm ideas with you, and I'm sure oldhat would, too!

Actually, I'm getting ready to put together another fruity beer soon, and a wheat beer to boot! Mine's going to include key limes, coconut flesh and milk, and ginger, and I'm going to bottle it with turbinado sugar for that hint of molasses.

 #brewing

omg, that beer you described sounds both very interesting and delicious. We should do a Whitechapel collaboration brew :P Adding a bit of a vanilla isn't a bad idea, I'm definitely looking just to get a smooth, cherry flavored wheat for this one, not looking for a lot of tart notes to it. I'll think about what I can do to balance that out. Though do you think I'd be fine as long as I used well ripened cherries (though not over-ripe) as opposed to young tart cherries? Thanks!

Antiseptic wipes and pasters are also very handy). Plus having something like a bag of mixed veg or peas in the freezer has come in very useful for the lumps and bumps of drunken idiocy (just make sure you wrap it in a tea towel first).

I suppose some basic tips on computer security, with free useful apps might come in handy if they've not had to look after the family's computers at home already ;)

Right I'll leave this alone now...

@government spy

This is sounding a lot like a book I received as a gift once, called "Etiquette for Outlaws,"

Now that sounds a useful research tool - I was really just thinking about something lower level than that, introductory level debauchery (largely drawing on what I've observed from folks leaving home for the first time - being able to cook, skin up and change a fuse goes an awful long way), rather than proper depravity you'd get up to a few years down the line.

 #twomonitorstoofancy

Let me preface this by saying I'm mainly felf-taught with my computer profeciency, and for the most part, have just kind of played things by ear and learned as I went. So I don't know jack, in other words.

A friend recently gave me a new flatscreen monitor, and I hooked it up to my HP Pavillion Desktop. I read that I may need to use a different video card to get the best picture out of the two monitors, currently, the stock card is an Integrated ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics card.

The new monitor is hooked up to the DVI port, and the old one is on the VGA. Do I need a card that has two DVI ports? So far, I've installed everything correctly as far as I can tell, and it works, I'd just like to know if I can make it even better.

I would like to use the new set up as efficiently as possible, so any hints or things I should know, to get the most use out of this set up, would be great.

As far as a budget for buying new video cards or whatnot, I'd like to be under $100, but there is buffer room.

Thanks

 #twomonitorstoofancy

A different video card probably won't give you a "better" picture. Like most cards, that one supports 30-bit color (about the most colors the human eye can discern), and assuming you have the resolution set to the proper resolution for each monitor (the highest it'll go to for a flat-panel display), the image quality will be the same. There is a chance of getting interference on a VGA cable, but that's pretty unlikely.

The difference you would see by investing in a better graphics card would be a faster picture. Games can update at a higher framerate, images get redrawn on the screen more quickly, etc. Some graphics programs can also take advantage of a graphics card with a faster processor, so (for example) you could resize an image in Photoshop in less time.

Bottom line: if you like the look of the two displays, and you're not noticing flickering when the image updates... it ain't broke. No need to fix it. :)

 Littlepurplegoth:

You are half correct in there - sunlight makes people synthesize vitamin-D, but it requires quite a lot of sunlight if you are relying only on it. Oh yes, I'm aware of that - a huge part of the issue is down to where you live globally :-) Using (or over using) sunblock is a huge part of the deficiency issue, and public health campaigns are generally written to meet lowest common denominator etc. (argh!)

Supplementation is rec. if you live in Northern Europe because for at least half the year the angle the sunlight strikes through the atmosphere it filters out the majority of the UVB and reduces the frequencies of UVA to those that are inadequate to trigger the process. Between April and End october though (certainly in most of England/Wales - may to early oct for most of scotland/northernendland/borders etc) it is perfectly possible to expose yourself sufficiently to make enough D for the whole year :-) If you live in the USA then you have an even longer window in which to do so. I appreciate that Finland has particular issues, and I would concur with you on there - supplementation is needed even where the diet is relatively high in animals that got that exposure on your behalf :-)

I don't have any real knowledge how this shit actually works, but my ex, aka baby mama, has recently decided she has asperger's syndrome. I knew her for a before we were a couple, and in high-school and she was very social, had her own clique and was kind of popular, amognst the social outcasts (i.e. punks & goths).

We dated for several years, and then some time after we split, she stopped having anything to do with our child, claiming that her asperger's prevented her from having any emotional bonds with people (including the kid). It makes me sad, and angry, because the rest of her family buys this bullshit, especially her parents, because it gives them license to not take any of the blame in this "what could we have done? we didn't know what asperger's or even autism was like in the early 80's"

I don't know if I can actually throw any of it in their faces, but I'd like to know is she full of shit. Does anyone here have or know how asperger's works, symptoms, signs, when it shows up, crap I haven't been able to learn from internets.

#youdonthaveassburgers
