So, glukkake's coming to town next week, and asked a very interesting question. Anybody else still active on the board in the general vicinity of New Orleans or capable of making it down here while she's down? If possible, I figure we could try to do a meetup at some point, or at least collectively come up with some bad suggestions of places for her to get completely lost in.

Aye, it's been determined that I'll be housed in the French Quarter from Tuesday, 3/20 until Friday 3/23 at which point we'll find alternate lodgings - my friend who is bringing me down is going to be in NOLA for a convention, so our hotel room is covered by the company until then, but we'll be in town until the 24th at which point we're on our own. Not that we need lodgings, but moreso that we'll be relocated elsewheres for convenience sake. I know nothing about public transport, the ability to smoke in bars, where one goes to buy booze (a packie? a bodega? a supermarket? geez) or any place I should go.
I plan on spending some time by the pool/in the free wifi at the hotel, but I would also like to check out good museums, awesome galleries, fantastic street art, the best music, underground brothels, illegal gambling on a boat... the usual that two weirdos from NYC would want to see down South. I'm gathering a list of folks to see & people to visit though bear in mind, I'm only going to be around for 4 days like a whirling dervish of alcoholism.

@glukkake underground brothels and illegal gambling on a boat, I might have to do a bit of digging for; everything else, the options are nigh on endless. Public transportation is decent to any sort of place you're likely to go to on a one week trip, smoking is permitted in bars(although not in restaurants, some of which look very much like bars, oh, and there are about 4 or 5 bars that decided on their own to go nonsmoking, but they do everything in their power to let you know and are generally nice about it if you forget), drinking is permitted in public (though in the french quarter, CBD, and faubourg marigny, you're supposed to put it in a plastic cup before you walk out, to keep down the amount of broken glass about). booze can be bought pretty much anywhere, from the gas station to the supermarket (and it's hard to be more than about 4 blocks from a bar, even in the most residential parts of uptown).

Damn. I miss South Louisiana. If only for one thing: drive through daiquiri shops.

    oh yeah.

we have those. the tiny part of my brain charged with making sure my liver survives to my 40th birthday was doing a very good job of making me not think about those. and the definition of "open container" is very amenable to the possession of a daiquiri in a vehicle, which only makes it worse.

    god I love this place.
