Here's the new story, written today, in response to a challenge by @256

Your challenge is to provide art: either a spot illustration or a two page adaptation.

Title: Rain Falling Like Hammers
Word: waiting
Length: 200 words exactly

It was raining the day he left.

I remember it quite clearly, the certainty of finality. It was done. I didn't care any more. Nor did he, and we both knew it.

And the Rain fell; I suppose it should have mattered, but it didn't. Not at that precise moment. Not any more.

He stumbled at the door, and looked back, a world of thoughts in those hazel brown eyes. He didn't say anything; we'd had too many conversations already where we'd talked a lot and said fuck all.

And there wasn't much to say anyway, I suppose. My world was ending and I didn't care enough to stop him leaving.

I turned my head away, waiting a few minutes, and when I looked back, there was only the Rain.

Then I looked out at the ruins of the city, half covered with debris, the other half submerged under the crushing waters that had arrived with inevitable force.

I looked up to where the Moon had once been, then down to where car sized fractions of it still hit the city daily.

He left when he knew there was no hope of survival. I stayed because I knew the same.

(c) Lee Barnett, 2012

The Rules

You’ve got until evening on Saturday 31st March, say midnight British time, (4pm Pacific) to put up either a one panel spot illustration or a two page comic book depiction of the entire story. The art can be pencilled, inked, coloured, lettered... entirely up to you. But ART ONLY – no story ideas, or suggestions. This is an opportunity to showcase your art and storytelling abilities.

We’ll announce on Sunday 1st April (yeah, i know, I'll wait until after noon) the winner who then gets to pick a new four word title and word, and I’ll write a new story which will go up Monday 2nd April... which will start the whole thing running again for the following two weeks.

If possible, please can you make sure you've got your email address registered in your profile so we can email you to let you know you're challenging me next time (just in case you're not able to visit that weekend).

OK, what are you waiting for? Draw, art-slaves, draw...!

@Budgie - That's a real shame. For what it's worth, I've loved these threads and the stories you've written for them. It's been a really interesting and different kind of challenge, which has produced some great work (from both sides).
(My 2 cents) I think the real difficulty is having 2 art challenges running at the same time, especially when you're up against something as well established as the Remake/Remodel threads. Speaking for myself, I only usually had time to work on one challenge (if that), and it was a hard decision to make.
Perhaps if there was an R/R thread one week, then a Fast Fiction the next, it might get more attention and flourish.
A beautiful experiment nonetheless. Thank you for all the inspiration.

@ Budgie: Yes, I also think the problem was two art challenges at the same time; people often don't have time for both (or sometimes, not even one), so they have to choose between them. Alternating them might be the answer, but I'm not sure how as R/R runs fortnightly. Perhaps a Budgie challenge could start a week after a new R/R challenge starts, rather than the two both starting and finishing at the same times. Or have R/R for two weeks, then the Budgie challenge for two weeks. Or both become monthly challenges so people have more time for them.

Maybe a word with Daddy Si? You might be able to work something out. I would really love this challenge to stay.
