Here's the new story, written today, in response to a challenge by @256

Your challenge is to provide art: either a spot illustration or a two page adaptation.

    Title: Rain Falling Like Hammers
    Word: waiting
    Length: 200 words exactly

It was raining the day he left.

I remember it quite clearly, the certainty of finality. It was done. I didn't care any more. Nor did he, and we both knew it.

And the Rain fell; I suppose it should have mattered, but it didn't. Not at that precise moment. Not any more.

He stumbled at the door, and looked back, a world of thoughts in those hazel brown eyes. He didn't say anything; we'd had too many conversations already where we'd talked a lot and said fuck all.

And there wasn't much to say anyway, I suppose. My world was ending and I didn't care enough to stop him leaving.

I turned my head away, waiting a few minutes, and when I looked back, there was only the Rain.

Then I looked out at the ruins of the city, half covered with debris, the other half submerged under the crushing waters that had arrived with inevitable force.

I looked up to where the Moon had once been, then down to where car sized fractions of it still hit the city daily.

He left when he knew there was no hope of survival. I stayed because I knew the same.

    The Rules

You’ve got until evening on Saturday 31st March, say midnight British time, (4pm Pacific) to put up either a one panel spot illustration or a two page comic book depiction of the entire story. The art can be pencilled, inked, coloured, lettered... entirely up to you. But ART ONLY – no story ideas, or suggestions. This is an opportunity to showcase your art and storytelling abilities.

We’ll announce on Sunday 1st April (yeah, i know, I'll wait until after noon) the winner who then gets to pick a new four word title and word, and I’ll write a new story which will go up Monday 2nd April... which will start the whole thing running again for the following two weeks.

If possible, please can you make sure you've got your email address registered in your profile so we can email you to let you know you're challenging me next time (just in case you're not able to visit that weekend).

OK, what are you waiting for? Draw, art-slaves, draw...!

You did a brilliant job with this one, Mr B. Glad to have been a part of it. Have an idea, but don't know if I'll get it done in time - if not, will slap it in the Artist's Thread for next month.

@dnewling - nice one! Reminds me of late 60s/early 70s DC, with that horror tinge to it.

Damn. I just don't have time for this.

@256 Thank you for the compliment.

Yes, I was feeling pressed for time this week as well; hence getting it in later than in previous threads.

@ Jason A. Quest: Are you sure? There IS apparently at least one man in this story, and possibly two of them.

That's at least two penis-drawing opportunities you're passing up here! :)

@ Jason A. Quest. Are you sure you couldn't work on the drawing progressively by fitting it around your schedule and doing a bit each time? That's what I did when I was a bit pressed for time on this one.

Winning by default because I'd be the only entry might be a bit of a cheat. Daddy Si wanted more entries on the Budgie threads because they've dropped off a bit lately.

Still, if you really haven't got the time, I guess it can't be helped.

The problem is that I'm already busy drawing penises for another project, which I'm already working on progressively by fitting it around my day job.

Ah, too many penises to draw, eh? Okay. I guess it'll have to last minute entries from others - if any.

@Oogliemooglie: So you think the narrator might be a man? Funny; I interpreted it as a woman saying farewell to her lover amid the oncoming catastrophe. Shows how two people can read the same text but interpret it in different ways.
  4.  (10564.15)
Almost any first-person narrator who doesn't mention their own body parts can be interpretted as either male or female.
  5.  (10564.16)
dnewling: I read it the same way as you did--but it seemed funnier to accuse JAQ of leaving two cocks on the table, as it were, instead of only one. No reason why they couldn't be gay.

If I win the challenge, I will definitely not use the word 'penis' in the next challenge....

That's a seriously beautiful story, Budgie. I'm afraid I won't have mine done in time, but it'll appear in the artist thread at some point. Hopefully more people will jump on board for the next one.
@dnewling - Nice work. I like all the details you managed to get in there.

Likewise, this has not been the week for me to get anything done, let alone anything good.

Did as much on this as I could sneak by on the other jobs. The finished one will pop up in the Artist thread shortly.
