Actually, that second shot was taken from the ground at Swayambhunath 'monkey' temple in Kathmandu. It's a Black Kite, and there were herds of the vicious bastards.

I've been slowly but surely uploading more shots on my flickr (jethrostamps), including some of monkeys defiling a beautiful temple with increasingly lurid acts.

The first shot I put here wasn't actually a hawk at all, it was a Griffon Vulture! A new job is taking a lot of webtime and I just se that I missed a lot of marvels !!!! Amazing stuff ! Spring, starts great.

I've got a photography/copyright trouble. Don't hésitate to send me to the right Whitechapel discussion, if not here ...

One of my pictures has been used by a large Dutsch newspaper "De Telegraaf", of course they didn't ask, and illustrating two not very 'respectable' articles.

For now, I'm trying to check if it is only webbased or also printed.

Did any of you already meet such a problem ?

I bought a 5 dollar plate of welders glass at Home Depot and rubber banded it onto the front of my camera. Add tripod, cable release, and a bicycle trip round the city's circumference and you get this. The Cathedral from inside Jackson Square

The crowd in front of one of the stages, with the original World Trade Center looming in the background. The artist playing is Alex McMurray, a guy who's absolutely huge on the local scene, but who pretty much never gigs outside of city limits.

The Creole Queen and a commercial tanker barge whose name I failed to catch.

Sazerac at Tujague's. Not the absolute best version of the drink in town, but not the worst, either, and they make it the exact same way they've been making it since absinthe was outlawed and Herbsaint was introduced. The bar itself has been largely unmolested since well before prohibition.

And last but not least, the special at RBar. Shot of Jameson, can of PBR, $5. Don't ask to try on the bunny mask. They just might let you, and you Really don't want to know where that thing's been.

I'm not asking this because I'm planning on aping all your techniques (I don't have the eye or camera for that) but just because I'm a curious git.

Cropping/resizing aside, how many of you use some kind of...ha, don't know the proper technical term for it, sorry...some kind of "processing" once you get the pics home or onto whichever gadget you use to view them? I'm tempted to say "photoshopped" but, besides all the other image editing software out there, that term can be misinterpreted too easily. I don't care either way - stunningly gorgeous is still stunningly gorgeous, regardless of how it might've been manipulated before it hits my retinas.

@The Mighty Foamhead As far as post-processing goes I use Aperture, which is a mac-only photo tweaking type affair. Personally (and I really think these things are uniquely personal, there are so many ways these shots can end up and it's entirely up to you how little or how much you want to tinker) the more I shoot, the more I try and get nice results out of the camera and tweak just a little. Anyone who shoots in RAW format is basically obliged to process, as the nature of the format demands it. Hope that's useful in some way! @The Mighty Foamhead - I'm a Lightroom guy as far as post processing goes. I do like to experiment with the software to see how it can offer different expressions of a photograph. It's much more intuitive than Photoshop (although it does lack some of the more robust capabilities of Photoshop as well). That plus Silver Efex Pro gets me all of the nice black and white conversions that I can manage. Thus, I hardly ever use Photoshop. I know the satisfaction of producing an image that's perfect (i.e. finished) when it comes out of the camera, so to an extent I understand why some people make this a philosophy. But, actually, working on photos after I've taken them is one of my favourite things about photography. If I look at a batch of photos and find that there are none that would be better with a bit of work, it's almost more disappointing than if there are just no good photos at all. Which I think is interesting because, while you quite often hear film photographers say that they enjoy spending hours in the darkroom doing this or that with their negatives and prints, in the digital space post-processing is almost invariably a vile burden or insidious corruption of pure photography. I don't know why that should be.

I also don't know for certain why I like the post-process as much as I do. Certainly I'm more interested in the way that photography doesn't represent reality, and thus has no particular claim on authenticity, which is underscored by taking an image and totally screwing with it (collage, composites, image stacking, combining different exposures, post-texturing, etc.).

The other side of it might be that the act of taking a photo is extremely time sensitive (blink and you'll miss it), and (in the case of portraiture, which I love most but find hardest) depends on interaction with another person, both of which can be quite taxing. Whereas post-processing is contemplative and solitary. I don't know that I would want one without the other.
