Fantastic art from Barreno and Erskine. And then LOL at 'more noisy fucking seals.' I used to holiday in Orkney as a kid, and I can tell you, they really are noisy bastards. But back to the art - the sense of movement between panels, like on page 20 where you see green mohawk guy with a bloody bat, then the next panel he's caving some guy's face in... IT LIVES. I'm right there with the narrator, experiencing how awful it is to be a lucky, lucky cunt; how it blinds you to horror.

The story, and the concept of this universe scares the living daylights out of me to be honest. I think I've been in a state of trauma since reading The Road a couple of years back, and anything that presents a total collapse of civilisation makes me extremely unnerved, especially after reading a lot of New Scientist pieces about just how fragile infrastructures are and just how little redundancy exists in the systems that make everything work - ie fuel/food/power distribution. It's weird...interesting...weird. When I first watched Serenity - in a theatre but long after the major crowds had drifted off - I jumped and nearly screamed every time a reaver popped up. I had to watch bits of the movie through girlvision (fingers over the eyes). But reading this, I'm alone in my room so no one to snoop over my shoulder and... no real fear or anything. Just taking it in and thinking "Yep that is horrible, I would have to hope I'd die quickly because getting fucked half to death and then having a bus roll over me to finish me off sounds like a poor show." Maybe I'm inured to violence like this on a page? Maybe the whole spiel on gore in movies vs real life put me at a distance from what was going on? Maybe it's the frenetic motion of a movie that startles me. I've never been queasy about blood and guts, and I've seen the aftereffects of a car crash only about five minutes later. (The more disturbing part of that was the lady with mangled arm and chest waving her other arm.)

But "why bother" Yea, indeed. Why go on? Or maybe, what does it mean to go on? Survivors feel lucky. And heroes (to refer to a completely different context) didn't set out to be impressive, they just did the task in front of them. Why remember? Well, why dissociate from the crossed? What makes them different and what does that matter? Why do the crossed seek them out instead of cannibalizing their own? What makes a person a person and not an agent of the collective? What makes a society? A civilization? It's not just memories of personal experience, but collective knowledge. Civilizations that anticipate the future and build on the past thrive. That's why. Those who don't "bother" don't get far; hiding from the future yields diminishing returns. @Si - I had not, to date, looked at Crossed, because there are so many good comics out there and my budget is limited. TBH, the only reason I started reading it now is because I was already here, then you took over the management, and you were personally entertaining. And it's great. It's got me engaged already, the same feeling I had when Freakangels started up or when I first discovered Preacher. And for the record I bought all of those in TPB.
