    Three years since.

In remembrance, what will you be doing to mark the Good Doctor's passing?

Is it possible to still get mescaline in this country?
  2.  (1057.2)
Last year a friend and I went on an ether binge in celebration which would have been fine had we not then gone to the pub to meet some friends and irritated everyone by just sitting there and giggling for a couple of hours while it wore off.

This year I intend to use the day to write a mildly hectoring missive to my MP about how Scientology is a cult and questions should be asked in the House of Commons.

I will be reflecting that, had Hunter S. Thompson just hung around until now, he could have seen the following:

    - A Democratic majority in Congress
    - The Bush/Cheney symbiote held in almost universal public contempt
    - An African-American candidate running within a stone's-throw from the Presidency
    - A female Presidential candidate who very likely WILL be our next President
    - The Republican Party in near-total disarray
    - A moderate Vietnam veteran as the shoo-in Presidential candidate for the Republican nomination

Any one of these things would have made Doc enormously happy; I bet seeing all of them play out now would have hit him like a daily dose of CNN-delivered Internet mescaline. You should have waited long enough to see the Gonzo universe immanentize, Hunter. We miss you.

My one regret is forever going to be not meeting this man to thank him for fighting the good fight.

I think we can honor him just by trying to look through the world through his eyes. If only for a little while. And weed out all the swine.

Then of course drink some Kentucky Bourbon and fire some handguns.

Gonzo-day would probably be much more awesome if I drank alcohol or took drugs, guess I'll have to settle for watching the complete Lunar eclipse that night for my dose of crazy.

    Has it been three years?

Flashback, to the Tritone in Philadelphia, maybe a month after Hunter S. Thompson's death. They had a 'wake' which was really an excuse for people to drink half-price Wild Turkey shots and get shit faced and act the prick. After two hours of an incredibly bad free jazz band playing 'beat-inspired' jazz music, they decided they were losing the crowd, played a handful of clips from 'Where the Buffalo Roam' and then opened the stage to whoever wanted to speak. Some drunken lunatic(eerily similar to HST's description of Peter Sheridan in Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail in '72) who we had been calling by something other than his real name took the stage and read twenty pages- slowly and painfully- from Kerouac's Dharma Bums or maybe On the Road trying to connect Hunter S. Thompson with the Beats in some meaningful way and failing miserably, much like a paper cat in a monsoon. After four back-to-back Wild Turkeys and much threatening, some how I overcame myself and dragged my sagged ass on stage. And I spoke. My first words were 'The Doctor would hate all of you'. It got their attention. I forget the rest of my comments, basically I ranted and raved and told people that admiring Dr HST had nothing to do with getting high or being drunk or shooting large caliber fire arms into the night. The Doctor himself said it better than I could 'I wouldn't advocate this lifestyle for anyone else, but it's worked for me'. HST didn't want a bunch of mindless idiot clones, high and drunk and heavily armed, he wanted people to bring the same level of critical thinking to issues that he did, he wanted people to make up their own damn minds and not follow anyone, least of all him. So few seem to have gotten the message. A lot of people clapped when I finished talking that not, some people booed, and one guy who we had been referring to as Teen Wolf even bought me some drinks. Maybe I convinced somebody, I doubt it. But it was worth trying Just like the Doctor would've.

Can't think of anything better than to at least start the day with a couple shots toast. And maybe stabbing a politician in the neck with a broken beer bottle... but mainly the shots.

'The Doctor would hate all of you'

    Bravo!

I'd still have got and will get drunk and high even if I hadn't of heard of him... call it coincidence.

I have to say I'm feeling the lack of HST more acutely this year, what with the election. I expect he would have had excoriating put-downs for each and every one of the fuckers.

I'll be raising a glass to the man but, as ChrisSick nicely put it, I've no desire to imitate him.

I'm going to wear my Flying Dog HST shirt, and drink some Flying Dog porter. Maybe I'll try and get a hold of Where the Buffalo Roam, as I haven't seen it.

    @sacredchao

I'm a huge thompson fan but where the buffalo roam pushes it. Bill Murray has flashes of genius but peter boyle is painful to watch. It seems more like a frat-movie ala animal house alot of the time.

I'm thinking of maybe doing a shot of something in the liquor cabinet in his honor and finally finishing On the Campaign Trail '72.

I'm having a time out until I can learn some manners.
I have been collecting all the free company logod coffee mugs I can and have about 2 huge boxes which I am going to shot with my biggest most deadly firearm.
Hopefully the crossbow I ordered will be here in time as well.

I will drink a toast of wild turkey (even though I don't really drink) to a time when being a lefty didn't automatically make you a pussy.

I do a lot of drugs anyway even for a Canadian but I will go all out for Gonzo day ,hopefully after the shooting.

Oh man. I think the best I can do is watch Fear and Loathing this weekend - no access to liquor or firearms.

    Rest in Peace, Raoul.

I'll be drinking and cursing more, may wear my accupulco shirt to uni just to get myself in the mood. I'll also demand a toast from my friends who don't really know who he is in the bar after class.
