Stephen Slevin was driving along a rural highway in southern New Mexico in August 2005 when traffic police pulled him over and arrested him on suspicion of drink-driving, along with a string of other motoring offences.

During the ordeal, he claims to have been denied access to basic washing facilities for months at a time. Prison officials had also ignored his pleas to see a dentist, forcing him to pull out his own tooth. They declined other requests for attention, including an audience with a mental health professional. He duly became delirious and says that by the time of his release he'd "been driven mad".

"There is a huge difference between my appearance now and the malnourished look of my childhood," says Hashi, 17, who was lured into the sex trade by a trafficker when she was 10 and sold to Kandapara's brothel, where she began taking steroids.

"I am healthier than before and fit to serve a lot of customers in a day. Sometimes up to 15," she says, placing a large black bindi, or dot used by Hindu women, between her perfectly shaped eyebrows.

Experiments using malt from the Ardbeg distillery on Islay are being carried out on the International Space Station to see how it matures without gravity.

It turns out that cloning scientist Hwang Woo-suk really meant it when he said last October that his next project would be to bring a mammoth back to life.

On Tuesday, Mr. Hwang’s Sooam Bioengineering Research Institute signed an agreement with Russia’s North-Eastern Federal University to clone a mammoth, the giant elephant that went extinct several thousand years ago.

Dr. Hwang, once hailed as national hero for his work on stem cells and cloning, fell from grace in 2005 after it was revealed that he fabricated what was then believed to be a major breakthrough in human embryonic stem cell research. He was virtually disbarred from the industry, with his license canceled. But he continued doing his experiments in animal cloning. Last October, he announced the successful cloning of a coyote.

On Monday, nine Korean and Russian scientists got together in Seoul to discuss their joint research in details including how to retrieve DNA samples from a mammoth.

According to the Sooam Institute, bioengineering scientists since 2002 have discovered what they believe to be the remains of a mammoth in the permafrost of Russia. Last August, it was reported that a thigh bone of a mammoth was discovered in Siberia.

MIT's Technology Review has just gotten news of a mysterious new project that claims it will "create a new industry and a new definition of 'natural resources.'" Space exploration company Planetary Resources will be unveiled in a conference call on Tuesday, April 24th. Besides the audacious announcement, which promises to "overlay two critical sectors — space exploration and natural resources — to add trillions of dollars to the global GDP," what makes this unique is its high-profile support group. The venture is backed by Google executives Larry Page and Eric Schmidt, director James Cameron, and politician Ross Perot's son, among others.

The molecules that piece together to form the six XNAs investigated by Pinheiro and his colleagues (pictured here) are almost identical to those of DNA and RNA, with one exception: in XNA nucleotides, the deoxyribose and ribose sugar groups of DNA and RNA (corresponding to the middle nucleotide component, labeled yellow in the diagram above) have been replaced. According to an article in the Science and Technology Daily, reproduced on Chinese government and military websites, Li’s Kidney Transplant Center conducted over 1,000 kidney transplants in 2004, an average of over 3 per day.

The number is suggestive of a deep problem. “You need lots of donors for that,” said Matas in a telephone interview. “And you need them on a standby basis. … The very number itself suggests that there are other sources of organs apart from prisoners to be sentenced to death.”

That source is practitioners of Falun Gong, according to Matas’s research. Netizens pointed out that the suicide took place about three months after revelations from a former policeman in Shenyang Province of involvement in live organ harvesting from a Falun Gong practitioner. The admission of guilt by the policeman may have rattled Li and driven him to kill himself several months later, netizens suggested.
