    Vatican Reprimands a Group of U.S. Nuns and Plans Changes
    The Vatican’s assessment, issued on Wednesday, said that members of the group, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, had challenged church teaching on homosexuality and the male-only priesthood, and promoted “radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith.”

    The sisters were also reprimanded for making public statements that “disagree with or challenge the bishops, who are the church’s authentic teachers of faith and morals.” During the debate over the health care overhaul in 2010, American bishops came out in opposition to the health plan, but dozens of sisters, many of whom belong to the Leadership Conference, signed a statement supporting it — support that provided crucial cover for the Obama administration in the battle over health care.


    “I’m stunned,” said Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of Network, a Catholic social justice lobby founded by sisters. Her group was also cited in the Vatican document, along with the Leadership Conference, for focusing its work too much on poverty and economic injustice, while keeping “silent” on abortion and same-sex marriage.


    I think that last sentences summarizes very well everything that's wrong with the catholic church : "Stop helping the poor, goddammit! Who cares about the poor? Can't you see the gays are getting married?"

    MIT's Technology Review has just gotten news of a mysterious new project that claims it will "create a new industry and a new definition of 'natural resources.'" Space exploration company Planetary Resources will be unveiled in a conference call on Tuesday, April 24th. Besides the audacious announcement, which promises to "overlay two critical sectors — space exploration and natural resources — to add trillions of dollars to the global GDP," what makes this unique is its high-profile support group. The venture is backed by Google executives Larry Page and Eric Schmidt, director James Cameron, and politician Ross Perot's son, among others.

    XNA is synthetic DNA that’s stronger than the real thing

    The molecules that piece together to form the six XNAs investigated by Pinheiro and his colleagues (pictured here) are almost identical to those of DNA and RNA, with one exception: in XNA nucleotides, the deoxyribose and ribose sugar groups of DNA and RNA (corresponding to the middle nucleotide component, labeled yellow in the diagram above) have been replaced. Some of these replacement molecules contain four carbons atoms instead of the standard five. Others cram in as many as seven carbons. FANA (pictured top right) even contains a fluorine atom. These substitutions make XNAs functionally and structurally analogous to DNA and RNA, but they also make them alien, unnatural, artificial.

    Doctors’ Suicides Focus Chinese Public on Organ Harvesting

    The most widely forwarded comment about the suicides of two doctors heavily involved in organ transplantation condemned the “unprecedented evil” of live organ harvesting—the removal of organs from unwilling, live donors, which in the process kills them. The doctors had taken their own lives because they couldn’t live with the guilt of involvement in this barbaric practice, the post argued.

    According to an article in the Science and Technology Daily, reproduced on Chinese government and military websites, Li’s Kidney Transplant Center conducted over 1,000 kidney transplants in 2004, an average of over 3 per day.

    The number is suggestive of a deep problem. “You need lots of donors for that,” said Matas in a telephone interview. “And you need them on a standby basis. … The very number itself suggests that there are other sources of organs apart from prisoners to be sentenced to death.”

    That source is practitioners of Falun Gong, according to Matas’s research. Netizens pointed out that the suicide took place about three months after revelations from a former policeman in Shenyang Province of involvement in live organ harvesting from a Falun Gong practitioner. The admission of guilt by the policeman may have rattled Li and driven him to kill himself several months later, netizens suggested.
