THE RULES:

This is for ART ONLY. Any pen-portraits, or crappy scribbles padded-out with words, will cause a deployment of the newly-trained Urethral Attack Maggots. And a banned account.

INSTRUCTIONS:

THE EYE SEES…

…is quite possibly the single most bizarre superhero ever to grace the page. Created by Frank Thomas in 1939, it doesn’t get much pottier than this. Thanks again to the excellent Jess Nevins for flag-waving the madness.

The ingredients are familiar – he’s a guy with amazing powers, a bunch of daring allies, a thing for smug bon mots and an unshakeable obsession with achieving justice – it’s just that he also happens to be a gigantic golden flying fiery-shrouded eye, for fuck’s sake, beyond time and space, which butts into people’s lives like some occult sexpest Voyeur-God, demands they risk their necks doffing-up muggers and pirates and dinosaur-clonists and Nazi kittens and gonad-surgeons and buggery-hijackers and, and, and really I don’t even need to be making-up these baddies because LOOK IT’S A GIANT GLOWING EYE, GUYS, SRSLY, LOOK AT IT, IT EVEN FUCKING TALKS AND GLOATS AND SHIT, and it doesn’t need to be any sillier than that.

As the ever-reliable Dan Markstein’s Toonopedia puts it: “The Eye missed being properly referred to as simply a flying eyeball by never quite being seen floating freely, or shown from behind. It seemed to have skin, even lashes, and was sometimes surrounded by what looked like yellow fire. It could have been interpreted as a giant humanoid, peeping through a flaming hole in the air. No explanation was ever given as to where it came from or what made it what it was. It was just there, turning up from time to time to help a good guy and/or hinder a bad one, neither of which would be seen in subsequent stories. It talked (again, without a mouth) like an omnipotent, omnibenevolent being, with a strong flair for melodrama.”

That’s sort of the challenge right there, in fact. How do you reinvent something which is already a) simple and b) UTTERLY MENTAL, for today’s thrill-inured cynical comic reader?

@dnewling, It's one of my bag of tricks I use for fire, water, jungle undergrowth and all sorts of other things. I start with several scanned and vectored paint squiggles like this: I layer a ...

I layer a bunch of different colors, like blues for water, yellow/orange/red for fire, etc. For the iris of the eye I just took the 'fire' and applied a 180° arc in Illustrator, rotated a couple of copies, tweaked it a bit, added a couple of shaded overlays for depth and boom, eyeball.
