    That's... a big question, with a lot of answers. I guess the shortest answer is that Mass Effect does a lot of things that a lot of games have tried to do before, but have always fallen short for one reason or another. It's the culmination of a really big wishlist that I'm guessing most of the game's fans didn't even know they had, until Mass Effect took them completely by surprise by fulfilling those wishes.

    I played Journey last weekend at a friend's and enjoyed it thoroughly!

    I downloaded the original Portal for my generally-doesn't-play-video-games girlfriend to play and she loved it. So much so that we went out and bought Portal 2 to play together and we're have the BEST time with it. I want to keep this experience going, but have serious doubts that we'll find anything else that we'll wanna play together.

    Okay, so the thing with Mass Effect is that it's a beautiful game with excellent story writing and great characters. For me, playing it almost felt like watching a superbly made SciFi show, and so I got really attached to the world and the characters, and it's really just plain fun. The current hubbub is that a lot of fans are pissed with the ending, because they felt like raised a lot of questions, so a lot of people felt like they didn't get the closure they wanted after having gone through a trilogy. I'm perfectly fine with ambiguous endings. One of my friends who feels like Bioware needs to "fix" the ending (to which edgar replied "I think you mean breaking the ending, but go on," haha), was really adamant that after having gone through a trilogy, he does NOT want ambiguity, he wants closure.

    There were also just questions about "wait, why is this happening in the ending? That doesn't make sense." So some people felt like the ending shouldn't have been possible.

    The other issue was that throughout the trilogy, you can choose to do things in a "paragon" route or "renegade" route, which for some people made them feel like they were making choices that altered the course of the game. The thing about that is, that while your choices do change some nuances of the game, the overall end result is the same. For example:

    it doesn't matter if you save or kill the council at the end of ME1. I killed them, Edgar saved them, and ME2 & ME3 didn't turn out any different for us other than I had different characters for the council and every once in a while they point out that I can't be trusted because i killed the council, but it's all just flavor text.

    It also doesn't matter much if your crew all survived the end of ME2 or not. The same things get done in ME3, only with different characters to fill in their places. But it feels more sentimental if they all survived and you get to reunite with them. But like I said, all flavor text.


    Anyway, the thing with the choices is that some people felt like they worked so hard to alter the way their trilogy would end, and then felt like at the very end, it didn't matter, and that pissed them off, too. My partner Edgar argues that hey, maybe that's the point, that sometimes you make the effort to make all these choices and in the end none of it matters, but people don't like that, they want it all to matter.

    Thanks, I appreciate the explanation, and it's a lot of what I've been hearing. Though I've also been hearing complaints of the ending simply not making and/or having plotholes, which seems to not be the case from what you guys are saying.

    Anyway, here's my friend's response to the news of the 'extended cut', that I think you guys might enjoy:

    I have finally finished Kingdoms of Amalur. My total playtime is apparently at around the 75 hour mark. It's not a particularly hard game, but my OCD tends to force me to do pretty much every side quest I come across (yes, the same compulsion is why I'm still nowhere near done with Skyrim yet, but I'm holding off touching that again until the DLC appears).

    It's fun, but not spectacular. And the ending is, well, if people are going to go off on one about Mass Effects they should be shown the one this has and see how lucky they are :)

    I agree with edgar though if thats the case i think the execution could have been more solid.

    Plot holes - yes. giant ones but only in the last two minutes of the game. This especially (spoilers). Those last couple of minutes werent very consistent with the rest of the game in tone or charcterisation. I've read something recently saying that all through ME1 snd ME2 the ending was going to be one thing and on the third game they threw away all the forshadowing they did and went with a different ending.

    Most of the people i've seen complaining have been following the developers comments and so are upset with the lack of variety in the endings becuse they were promised very destinct differences in press releases prior to the games release.

    Personally i think bioware's PR dept have handled the whole situation really badly, both before and after release. They should have hinted at the tone of the game, and owned the ending straight away instead of waiting and letting the fan reation gain traction. They also should have released the from ashes dlc for free because i think a lot of the conversations in there were incredibly illuminating when it came to the finale. I didn't think much of the ending but the extended cut is bullshit - who wants more cutscenes when they could have playble content?

    Does anyone have an interest in Funcom's "The Secret World"? I gave up MMOs a ways back, but this one has me considering a return...

    No classes, no levels... wondering if it is skill based like my first and favorite, Ultima Online.

    I just got back from pax east yesterday, and am so ridiculously pumped for Natural Selection 2.

    It's actually real and was playable on the show floor! Of course I might be the only person here who actually played the original NS, and am alone in my enthusiasm. I know that was true in the group I was in, but I nerded out about it and I think sufficiently hyped up my friends too.
