I've been lurking and reading here and the main site for several years now, being a huge fan of Transmetro and Crooked. At any rate, my partner and I have been trying to come up with a great tattoo design to symbolize our relationship... but I struggle to tap back into my skill as an artist from my youth. She came up with the idea of a theme with a yin yang symbol because our personalities are so opposite, but we counterbalance each other almost perfectly!

I came up with a very rough idea of a demon/angel yin yang symbol:

Would anyone be interested in helping me out with a finished design or allowing me to commision a rendition of this pic? I would be glad to give up any rights to it as long as you dont mind it being on two bodies until we decompose, lol!

The idea is for the demon to be a black sillouette on white background & the angel to be a white sillouette on a black background... with the heads being the two dots within the symbol. That said, I am open to all interpretations.

Thanks!

Go to the tattoo artist themselves. Tattoo artists are artists. They will also be able to design it the best way that fits their medium.

Glukkake is correct. Check out tattoo studios near you, find an artist who works in a style you like and go in for a chat. Tattoo artists want your business and are generally very accommodating.

As you're shopping for a tattooist, ask to see some of their original designs to get a sense of whether they have the skills and style you want. Some get by just copying designs out of a book or given to them by customers, but the good ones will be glad to show off art they've created entirely themselves.

That's been my problem... the tattooists in the area aren't artists as much as they are tracers/copiers. I have gone to a couple different tattooists, but they were pretty adamant about me bringing in what I wanted done... you pick it, i'll stick it was the mantra of one of em. Only one of the ones I visited had any freehand talent, but it's just not where I need it to be... yet. After all, the canvas is my skin, and there's no turning back.

If I am out of line for asking here, I apologize, but after seeing some of the amazing stuff members have created, I thought I might find someone willing to work with me.

Thanks for the comments! I guess I will have to wait until I can travel some distance before I can find a true artist that I trust with my skin to do freehand.

go to a tattooist who CAN draw what you want... otherwise you won't get the right tattoo for you.

it isn't out of line but really its a permanent thing. if you spend more on travel than on the tattoo so be it, as long as you LOVE the tattoo

This is true! But honestly if they're just tracers, they're likely going to lose a lot of the finesse an artist would give you. Travel and find someone awesome! My tattoo artists are some of my favourite collaborators - I'm an artist myself and I trust them to turn my work into the best it can be because they know the medium WAY better than I ever will.
