It almost looks like a barometer but for that to work you'd need there to be an opening somewhere near the T-bar.
Here's a pic of a storm glass barometer.
There's a bubble of air in the bulb trapped by water in the tube and as the external atmospheric level changes the bubble expands and contracts moving the water up or down. These were used to warn of impending storms so they didn't have to be particularly accurate they just had to show when the pressure was falling.
But, like I said, you'd need a hole somewhere above the level of the liquid.
Looks like a hydrometer. I'm not sure why it has the bend though but it might be for testing large vats whereas the more vertical ones are used on narrower containers?
Okay, so, I'm almost positive that there's a punk song out there in the world that has a very similar opening to Nirvana's Sliver. It's probably at least 10 years old, chances are it's from a Fat Wreck Chords band... but might be on a compilation c.d... And I think the opening line is "I went to a punk rock show"
Anyone out there know of this song? Anyone convinced that maybe it was on a punk mixed tape that someone made for me so I associate it with punk instead of Nirvana? (I'm starting to think the latter, but still going through my c.d.'s to see if I can find it.)
Edit: Why is it that when I try to post a video I can't do it to save my life but when I'm just simply trying to link to it I can't figure out how to do that either?
My flatmate's cat is 16 years old, very skittery and seemingly poorly trained (inasmuch as cats can be trained). It is a mostly inside cat and it frequently vomits. As well as that, small slightly damp patches have been found on my duvet cover. Initially, it was dismissed as not being to do with the cat due to me being quite sweaty after having come back from a run (although not actually having sat on the bed except to take my Fivefingers off should have been a clue it probably wasn't me). It also didn't smell like urine or go through to my bed which led to the initial dismissal of it not being to do with the cat. However, tonight, after going towards my room which the cat heard and flew out of like a bat out of hell, there was/is a similar patch on my duvet cover. I haven't been running today, and I hadn't been in my room for a few hours. There aren't any leaks above my bed. (The cat has vomited in my room which means I have a problem even if the damp patches are not caused by the cat.)
(Edited to add that possibly worth noting is that I've been using animal repellant across my doorway in an attempt to stop it entering, and it doesn't seem to be that effective given the cat's still coming in. Probably haven't been using it quite on the timeframe directed though, at least intitially.)
Two questions: Given the cat's propensity for vomiting and the possibility the duvet cover patches are caused by the cat doing something, is there a way I can get the cat to avoid my room without having to close the door when I'm not in there? Also, any suggestions as to what the patch could be if caused by the cat given it doesn't seem to be urine?
#catproblems Dusting the floor under your door with ground white pepper might help, works best on carpet and you need to do a strip about half a metre wide. The only truly effective and humane solution is to move to a catless dwelling - trust me, I've been there!
So Amazon's delivery service that I paid £18 for just told me "You weren't in when we called" even though I've been 'in' for 2 whole days trying to receive the tripod over 2 attempts. They definitely didn't call and I've got to leave for work in London on Monday morning - i.e. to use the expected tripod on Wednesday.
Does anyone know where I can buy an affordable tripod with a fitting for an Android smartphone [like this] in London?
[That's London, UK so apologies to all our non-Blighty-based denizens.]
@Ben - No chance it has just been recalled to the local distribution facility where you can go pick it up...? That happens all the time here in the States. Just means taking a drive out to the UPS or FedEx warehouse where it is being held before they send it back.
@Finagle - Unfortunately, it's 4 hours away [I live in Wales, we like our countryside green, ergo we have to drive for 25 miles minimum to get to a damn supermarket]. I've also tried calling them several times since I got the email and they tell me their offices are closed after midday on Saturdays and all-day Sundays.
I think they've completely screwed me over by getting the wrong address for me. It happens all the time due to the massive area our postcode covers and because we don't show up on GPS properly. urrghh
I'm getting this from my other half, as she's the cat person and I'm not, but she advises against using bleach based cleaning products around the problem area. To cats, bleach smells quite a lot like their pee, so it just encourages them to keep peeing in the same area if they keep smelling it there. Hope that helps.
I know jack shit about animals, but my sister owns cats and one of them has been known to drool so enthusiastically that it leaves wet patches where it's resting its head. Might be that.
I rented a room out of a house that had a crazy cat lady. Because of bad heat/ventilation/no a/c, I couldn't shut my door but I wanted to keep her cats out. So the landlord built a folding screen door inside my doorway that I could latch closed when I wanted air flow, but no cats. Did the trick, but not exactly sure how he built it.
Of course if the cat isn't that sprightly anymore, the same effect as above might be achieved with one of those toddler safety gates. Though I'm guessing maybe not, if she can still climb well enough to get onto your bed ...
My wife and I bought a cheap floor rug to use as a bed cover during the day. The cats sleep on top of it, and the rubberized base of the rug prevents any leakage getting into the sheets. A big plastic dropsheet from the dollar store is also effective.
