I don't know, maybe I'm wrong and he's supposed to be Canadian or Australian or something else, but those are generally trademarks associated with the UK's image of the US. I'm not saying that people like that don't exist, because I live in Texas and I get to see them up close every once in a while-- but they represent a tiny part of our population, despite what people elsewhere seem to think. I'm Sure Mr. Spurrier is just reporting what he sees, but it still kind of sucks to be portrayed like that.

It's a minor thing. The suspense is a little dulled in the flashback, since we know he's going to survive until the island, but the gut twisting he endures along that way remains just as visceral, and that's making those scenes really sing.

It's not just the "seeing yourself" aspect, it's trying to survive complete insanity.

I still haven't read Ennis' Crossed comics, but I'm generally torn on him. On the one hand, I read and enjoy "The Boys" because he has a way to make me care about characters, and he does some REALLY good action when he feels like it, and when he's funny, he IS really funny. But he's also constantly out there on the edges of "gross for the sake of gross", and his stuff frequently comes across as downright juvenile. It's a case of tolerating the bad to enjoy the awesome. I'll likely pick up the first trade paperback of Crossed once it's out, give it a whirl (being in Norway means it becomes prohibitively expensive to keep up with imported weeklies), and then we'll see.

My only experience with Garth Ennis so far is his ancient run on Hellblazer, which I liked. I keep meaning to read Preacher and The Boys but haven't yet. I definitely agree about the use of gore for the hell of it. ]]>
