Tomorrow afternoon my time, I begin a new email newsletter. It’s been two years since I closed down my previous, longrunning email thing Bad Signal. And this isn’t going to be the same as that. This will be a roughly weekly blast, and mostly about work — the forthcoming novel GUN MACHINE, and the one after that, and other projects as they develop. It’ll also be a download of whatever’s in my head that isn’t short enough for Twitter and not coherent enough to appear here. And about writing, and writers. And, really, whatever else is on my mind when I sit down to do it.

The first one goes out tomorrow. We’ve opened the sign-up system today. It’s at this link, or, if you scroll around this page a bit, in the right-hand menu bar.

I was born on Manhattan, and grew up in the suburbs. The City always seemed an artificial place; canyons of masonry and glass and steel. I knew that it was a natural island and the tale about it being bought for $24 in Wampum, but there was no immediacy or reality to this knowledge. It wasn't until I started commuting up the Hudson and across the Tappan Zee that I started getting these . . . well, it would be really pretentious to call them visions. Let's say vivid imaginings of what the valley and Manhattan itself would have looked like three hundred years before.

This was all rubbed in by the Ken Burns series about New York. One episode was about the reworking of the island by Clinton-Dewitt. Flattening it out, filling in the holes. You can see bits of original landscape way, way up north, but this makes the artifice of the rest of the island all more shocking and wonderous.
