In regards to Dan Harmon getting fired from Community:

Not only is Harmon gone, so is Chris McKenna, the Russo brothers and Neil Goldman. Don't know if they left in protest or were fired. Basically, the only one left aside from the cast, is Megan Ganz (who, I should mention, is great.) I doubt she'll get enough leverage to guide the show now that the Happy Endings people are taking over. They should have just cancelled it, instead of this horrible, shambling zombie we're going to get.

No one knows exactly why Harmon was fired, but the Sony spin-machine is trying to make it about how Harmon was difficult to work with; which isn't unlikely, but seems strange, as I'm sure there are a lot worse showrunners out there. Here's Harmon's thoughts:
"Why’d Sony want me gone? I can’t answer that because I’ve been in as much contact with them as you have. They literally haven’t called me since the season four pickup, so their reasons for replacing me are clearly none of my business. Community is their property, I only own ten percent of it, and I kind of don’t want to hear what their complaints are because I’m sure it would hurt my feelings even more now that I’d be listening for free."
- danharmon.tumblr.com

For a little balance, here's an interesting take from Cheers showrunner Ken Levine.

And here's an old quote from Dan Harmon, commenting on the D&D episode:

The studio and network response at the table-read was so removed from that. They were so upset about the crime of this episode having been written. The note session as a whole was preceded by a 45-minute period of them walking around the lot whispering to each other. They told me they would come up to my office and meet me privately. When they came up, I had the director and all of the writers in the office with me, because I was terrified. They sat down, and they said, “Look, where do we start?” I couldn’t believe this was happening. I was like, “This is opposite of how you should feel right now. This is a great episode. We’re going to get a 1.7 no matter what. We will build our ratings in other ways. The episode is not about credit cards; it’s not about Hilary Duff. It’s going to get the same numbers. There is a cultural build to a hit show. We have to prove to people that we’re capable of good things so they can trust us, so that we can have a relationship. One day we will either be a highly rated show or we’ll be cancelled. It will not have to do with this moment. This episode is good, the story is good, these characters are good. Anyone who doesn’t tune in because the commercial says they’re playing Dungeons & Dragons, it’s not my fault. It’s not on me.

It was such a depressing note session, because they didn’t even have any notes on the story. They just didn’t want it to exist. I took a photograph of my eyes driving home that day at 3 p.m. because I was leaving work early. I looked in my rearview mirror, and I was crying. More than crying, I was red-eyes, tears streaming, weeping. And I was weeping out of self-pity and frustration, like a child weeps when he doesn’t understand his parents’ rules. “Why can’t I have ice cream when I ate my liver?” I took a photo of it, so I could show it to them between seasons, because as I told my girlfriend when I got home, “I think I’m going to have to quit my own show, because I can’t operate under these circumstances. I can’t be this proud of something that the people paying me to do it are this ashamed of. It will never work. We’ll never achieve anything. It’ll never connect.” So it was the best of times and the worst of times. I think that episode is fantastic. I haven’t watched it again, but I remember it as being something else. I invite people over to my house to watch the episodes with me on Thursday night that I’m really proud of, and that was definitely one of them.

More nuanced than that makes it sound, strong production values (her future looks a little like the Alphaverse in the late lamented Charlie Jade), her Standard Issue Cybercool Cop Suit has a nifty magic-bag set of tools (including temporary invisibility) & it's going for a nice swipe at the Occupy-vs-1% thing.

I've seen the first third or so of Continuum and I'm more intrigued by the "timey-wimey" stuff that's more hinted at than said. The idea that Future Alec has known about all this stuff coming and deliberately allowed the terrorists to murder 30,000 people just to establish the past is one thing. The idea that young Alex was attracted to Rachel Nichols' characters (because she, well, looks like Rachel Nichols) leads to the idea of Alec observing/manipulating/stalking her since before she was even born is one of the other things. Plus, I never really got what relationship the younger guy who was Rachel Nichols' husband/boyfriend had with future Alex. Employee/protege? Son? Grandson? I don't know, I just see the potential for Continuum to get into some deeply fucked up possibilities around the edges.

 /Mad Men/ -

In all seriousness, my issue with the construction of this show now is that it flaps wildly back and forth between (a) portraying Don Draper as a blank, Zelig-like, force of nature that nobody can truly know, and (b) trying to construct an interior mental life for Don Draper with some kind of narrative consistency. The writerly point of view makes no attempt lately to reconcile these two perspectives. Sometimes we get episodes showings some wildly revealing psychological motivation for Don, sometimes we get episodes where he's the monster from /Cloverfield/, trashing everything around him but never seen from the inside.

I have gotten sucked in by too many shows that write themselves into a corner over the course of four or five seasons in this way (/LOST/, /The Sopranos/) and then completely chicken out on any attempt at resolution in the end, then try to pawn the whole mess off as complex writing and ambiguity. Honestly, I suspect it is one part laziness and one part just enjoying jerking the audience around, and one part sheer terror at realizing how far the shit has gone.

One could try to make a clever point about how /Mad Men/ enacts through its structure, the same sort of disintegration of the notion of a unified self and the modernist image of Man that was happening in the 60's. One could make a point about a /Rashoman/-like series of interpretations as Don's actions are seen through the various other characters, versus his increasingly collapsing sense of self. One could, but I'm just not feeling it lately. It just feels like unsatisfying noodling.

 @William Joseph Dunn

Yeah, I saw that too. How could I not? Very much would love to know your participation and experiences doing this project, but you probably cant divulge any of that info. Can you?
What color scripts are yours? And more importantly, what is a Color Script? Not familiar with that term.

I'm looking forward to the Dark knight returns project, the fact that they split it into two parts is encouraging, I'm liking the voice casting they are doing, but i think it was premature to showcase some of the voice work. Most of it seemed off to me, like the voices didn't fit the characters in the samples given, but i'm sure it will all fit once the animation is included.

Also, i've been wondering for the last few days which people deserve the credit for how well made Superman VS Elite really is.
Cause in all Honesty, up to this point, I had been a little dissapointed with the Direct to Video DC cartoons, especially the ones adapted from Comics. I don't hate them or think they suck, I love them all, but their was something lacking in the story, like something was lost in the translation from Comic to animation. It's hard to explain what I mean,
But for SVSTE, I've decided to give most of the credit to writer Joe Kelly and director Michael Chang. Unless, someone else knows something I don't.

Interesting, I just noticed that the director for The Dark Knight Returns is Jay Oliva but his profile in IMDB shows that he has been a Storyboard Artists for many animation projects and some movie projects, so this is his first shot as director. He must have really impressed the bosses.

I guess it helps that I agree with a lot of his political views.

I've been reading a lot of reviews on the initial episodes and I am getting this very negative vibe all around.

What gets me is that most of the criticism, is not at the show itself, and more about the man Aaron Sorkin himself.
His political views, his "style" of writing and his professional habits as producer. The general criticism seems to be, sarcastic tone: "yes the writing is great, and the production is great, and the casting is great , but if Aaron Sorkin would get out of his own way, the show would be better"
Looks like the mainstream media has decided Sorkin has been succesful long enough so it's time to drag him down to obscurity.
God, I hope I'm wrong.
Also, another criticism that kept popping up. The dialogue isn't realistic because real people don't talk like that.
Which is fucking stupid and lazy criticism, almost troll like.

Yeah, Sorkin, you're a genius at writing dialogue, so don't do that because it's not realistic. What?
If I wanted to watch realistic dialogue, there are thousands of reality shows to choose from, and they are all crap.

 re: Louie

I'm another latecomer to this and ending up watching the first two seasons over a weekend a few weeks ago - 26 eps which are only 21 mins or so each - and loved it. A nice mix of his stand-up and...sit-com (very unorthodox sit-com, though.) Consistently funny despite having to look away when he really makes a fool of himself.

As for "not likely to change"? There are a few episodes which touch on "more serious subjects" but the humour's always there. Having said that, saw the first of the new season yesterday and, style/entertainment-wise, it picked-up exactly where S2 left off. The only things which might improve it for me would be to shorten the opening credits (but I think that about most TV shows) and (more?) episodes where the whole show is devoted to a single idea, rather than the twofer format it usually takes.

But I mean, what's not to love about a show featuring Doug Stanhope as a burned-out comedian on his way to commit suicide?

I'd say stick with it, SteadyUP, the show had only one real bump in it (#2 "Bummer/Blueberries"), and even that was just a bump, not a wall. He finds a way to inject emotion without it become soppy, and the dick jokes balance the sweet moments, so it's not too much of either.

Plus, his talk with Joan Rivers was really great in talking about why creatives do what they do to continue on, even when things are shitty.

I took quite an issue with first episode of Season 3 of Louie.

The relationship breakdown was good, I liked it a lot mostly because of how well his ex-love interest counterpointed his character. She was a breath of fresh air whenever she was on screen.

The rest however, was just sadism for the sake of Louie having a shitty life, not based in any sort of reality. If a construction team starts working on a road, they tow your car, they don't destroy it haphazardly or start working around it. When something like that happens, don't you take legal recourse? Your property was just destroyed by city workers. Does that not require some legal inquiry? I don't understand the logical road map which lead Louie to just shrugging it off and moping about it. Which then leads to the motorcycle scene, which I got the need for thematically in connection with the opening joke about the replacement penis, not to mention how he needs to feel masculine after being shown that he has no power in the world(the character destruction) or in his relationships(having the woman break up with him because he wanted to) but it was contrived the way it was handled. To legally ride a motorcycle, you need a specific license, which requires a day course, not to mention all the insurance that's required, so Louie basically walking out of the store with the motorcycle was just lazy and uninformed writing, again for the sadistic and thematic brutalization of his character.

Either of these issues, handled differently, would've still been kick the dog moments, but in much more a) realistic and b) soul crushing ways. The car tow is something that happens to everyone and getting it out of the lot is a shitty time. Have Louie try and deal with the man in the booth, not remembering his License plate or something. The legal recourse would be equally awful and demoralizing. The motorcycle, have him work towards it, want it and then have an accident in which the motorcycle is destroyed after all his hard work, making it for not.

I guess my overall problem is just how opposed Louie is to change and the resultant stagnation caused by that refusal. I get that it's an astute comment/deconstruction on the sitcom and many people's lives, but I feel that the point is made. I want to see it go somewhere, I want to feel like Louie is on some sort of a narrative journey. While I understand that this is a story telling convention and doesn't reflect the show's need for character reality, I find it grating that C.K. is comfortable rejecting logical connections (The car and the motorcycle) so easily.

I suppose I'm just having trouble coming to grips with Louie as a character and the world he exists in.

They seem to be modern parables of a man who refuses to change.

@johnjones: Interestingly, my reaction to Coraline was much different, though to be fair, I read Neil Gaiman's blog/etc, so it has probably been explained on some level there. The way I understand it, the story is that you can be unhappy with your parents and your lot in life, but what seems enticing might just be something/someone terrible in disguise. But if you are brave, keep your wits together, and get help from those around you, you can beat that terribleness and get your parents/life back, usually with a slightly improved situation. Now that I think about it, it has very fairytale/folktale sort of organization to it, which is unsurprising, coming from Neil Gaiman.

He's still also Walter, though, and the Law of Unintended Consequences is biting him on the ass as usual, such as the bank number that was revealed in the picture he so helpfully broke for the police. They dealt with Mike much more quickly and efficiently than I was expecting, and I think he might even stick around to see how the new boss handles things, maybe. Skyler's ex-boss is now terrified of her, and for good reason, because Walt is rubbing off. Hank is 100% vindicated in last season's investigations. Jesse's "Try a mag... how about a magne... TRY A MAGNET!" bit was pure gold.

Lots of stuff happened, wrapping up loose ends and starting a whole load of new ones.
