That setting also gives the story a really ominous tone (no mean feat, given what's gone before!). While isolating themselves does give them some degree of safety, they're also very much trapped. I love that. They're almost literally treading water.

I don't know. I think a lot of that has to do with the tone and nature of the viewpoint characters. FREAKANGELS was viewed through the eyes of the superpowered psychic 'angels and their semi-sidekick, Alice. None of the story took place through the eyes of the native Whitechaplers. Plus you had stuff like people unshooting guns, putting up moats of time and coming back from the dead.
