I mean, it's the Crossed-universe so that goes without saying, but, yeah, this isn't going to go well at all... -
If the Thames is anything like the Willamette here in Portland, then it's a frigging nasty river to be swimming in. But from the looks of things, it's safer than anywhere else in London. Just don't swallow any water. I've been liking the series so far; job well done, Si.

Believe me, the Thames would be a infested soup-of-slop to go swimming in, even without Crossed-juice in the vicinity.

I still reckon anyone roaming around naked in the Outer Hebrides, much less swimming naked, is a deader sooner rather than later anyway.
The cold would probably have killed that guy before he got to Cava even if the current didn't.
But then I come from the subtropics where people are freaked out becaude it went down to 8C last night. -
@Kosmopolit - nah, tempratures are pretty good really, even relative to mainland UK, it's the wind that's the bastard.

One of the things I'm really enjoying about WYWH is the sense of place, the knowledge that the setting is a real place that one could visit.
Somehow, Cava seems much more real than, say, the Freakangels' Whitechapel. -

One of the things I'm really enjoying about WYWH is the sense of place, the knowledge that the setting is a real place that one could visit.
That setting also gives the story a really ominous tone (no mean feat, given what's gone before!). While isolating themselves does give them some degree of safety, they're also very much trapped. I love that. They're almost literally treading water.

I must congratulate @Horrible Warning Si on creating such a compelling story. A case of life imitating art from the Guardian website:

I don't know. I think a lot of that has to do with the tone and nature of the viewpoint characters. FREAKANGELS was viewed through the eyes of the superpowered psychic 'angels and their semi-sidekick, Alice. None of the story took place through the eyes of the native Whitechaplers. Plus you had stuff like people unshooting guns, putting up moats of time and coming back from the dead. That's going to tend to heighten one's sense of unreality. -

Whitecahapel was, perhaps, not the best example.
But I've read dozens if not hundreds of books and comics with scenes set in the White House (and seen just as many or more movies) but I've no idea of what route you'd take from the main foyer to get to the Oval Office. -

I have to echo what others are saying about the sense of place. Cava and the Scapa Flow are almost characters in the story themselves. I actually googled a map of the area and read up about it on wikipedia, and normally I'm a skip-the-map kind of guy when I pick up the sort of story that starts off wih one.
