I'm listening to "Bukowski" by Modest Mouse right now, and it occurred to me to wonder: Has anyone ever written a song about Spider Jerusalem? Because if there ever was a comics character who screamed (...and swore, and spat...) for a theme song, it's him.
Thanks Malsain and .. wow.. I didn't know anyone really knew my creation :)
But yeah, my biggest influences are Martin Scorsese's early work, The Maxx (the cartoon) and Warrens works: Transmetropolitan, Fell, Desolation Jones and Global Frequency. I thought I have a similar view on the world, but at some point I realized that these influences created my view on the world. Whatever I try - that's how everything seems to look these days.
As for Spider hating a theme song... here's how I see it. I think the closest character to Spider anywhere in the mass media would be DR. Cox from a US comedy series "Scrubs". And . . . f**k yeah he'd love to have a theme song. But it would have to have balls the size of planets!
No no no The song that fits Spider most is Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life". I've argued that if there ever was an animated Transmet this would be the opening song, with Spider walking along to the beat and drinking and drugging at the right moments. Spider Jerusalem is worth a million in prizes.
I remember at the end of the issues of transmet, Warren would give suggested listening. One in particular that sounded awesome in the background of reading issues was "Becoming X" by the Sneaker Pimps. I wouldn't say it's a theme for Spider himself, but it definitely is a song that works in the city the he lives in.
As for Spider himself...I don't know. I think he'd be like most of us and have several "themes" based on the mood that he's in. When he's doing research in his apartment with the holographic flames, for instance, O Fortuna, Knowledge of Self by Dieselboy, or even Bubblebop Shot by The Boredoms comes to mind.
I'll be watching this thread with interest. I'd really like to see what comes out of this. I just can't pick one song to match Spider.
However, I'm sure he'd enjoy humming "The Laughing Policeman" whenever passing by the cops.
Well I know it came out well before Transmet, but I've always felt Dolittle is the best soundtrack to a transmet trade. Gouge Away is enhanced when listening to Gouge Away.
Personally, I absolutely LOVE this music video I stumbled across on YouTube when applied to Transmet/Spider, by someone who was completely enamored with Transmet and wanted to use it as a background for a very low-key, small band that his brother had. The music has a pretty good Transmet feel to it in itself, but I LOVE how well he got the timing down and showed the panel by panel action. Absolutely love how it starts!
Granted, half of the time he's utilizing Spider's speech bubbles to imply Spider actually singing the song, but other times he's got the panel exactly as in the comics with the background of the music. It's a really catchy and awesome song, in my opinion, with great timing (and an excellent imagery choice, heheheh).
Here's the address, as I can't seem to embed the YouTube player with either the YouTube coding or the video/mp3 button: Enjoy! Or for the link itself for copy/pasting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rhjzzb-TlB4 Just thought I'd share a catchy, good song/video homage to Transmet. Edit: Awesome, guess the player embedding DOES work when actually posted rather than in preview!
