Number 1 slow film recommendation: 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,' it has a run time of 160 minutes, and it feels about five hours long, but it never fails to pull me in, utterly rapt. Career highlight performances by the entire cast, and Roger Deakins doing what he does the way that only he can do it (he robbed himself of the Oscar it should have gotten him by getting nominated for No Country for Old Men the same year, splitting the vote and handing it to Robert Elswit for 'There Will Be Blood').
Dammit, it's twenty past one in the morning and now I kind of want to watch it again. -
@David: Seconding that nomination. I vaguely remember rambling about it on here or maybe The Engine a while back, but the film's denouement is one of my favorite bits of cinema.

Slow movies:
You don't get much slower than the work of Andy Warhol. I recommend starting with /Sleep/. -
It's not new (neither am I!), but I just watched Eastern Promises by David Cronenberg and really enjoyed it - I'll probably be talking with a Russian accent for the next few days.
I was talking to a mate about slow, dreamy films. Weirdly, he'd just bought a Cocteau DVD. I was watching Dreams Money Can Buy the other night, a film made by a bunch of surrealists, but I fell asleep. It's a good job I've not got a job as a critic, as I'd get the sack. Anyway, I recommended Stalker to him.
Some good suggestions on here. -
Saw Brave last night. Story went somewhere I didn't expect it to and it felt a bit too rushed, but otherwise pretty lovely! Holding out till the fella is well so we can both go and laugh at goatse Bane.
September is promising to be a good movie month if only for The Sweeney and Dredd. -
Brave might be the first Mother/Daughter action buddy movie ever made. It's certainly the only Disney/Pixar movie I can recall in which a rebellious girl and her more traditional mother are brought closer by actually, you know, spending the movie helping each other through life altering adventures.
Usually, if there is a mother at all, they come to appreciate each other from being totally separated for he whole movie. -
And that's what I thought was going to happen originally. I thought daughter would do something, save the family and the mother would have some newfound respect for her wishes. Nice surprise.

I thought Brave was good not great, there just seemed to be something missing. Oldhat might be right that it was a bit rushed. @Oddbill & Oldhat could you understand what young MacGuffin was saying? -

I thought Brave was a pretty good Disney movie, but only an OK Pixar film. If that makes any sense. I liked it though. It's pretty to look at.
I just saw Total Recall and liked it. I think Len Wiseman was trying to link the worlds of Bladerunner and Minority Report together in this film. Good action sequences and some really great visual candy. Not much humour in it, but there are some nods to the original Total Recall in it. -

Just watched Bobcat Goldthwait's "God Bless America". I liked it. This movie went where "Idiocracy" was afraid to go. -

Go in cold to 'God Bless America'. The trailer pretty much gives away the entire movie.
I thought it was decent enough, but I would probably have had a higher opinion of it without the trailer spoilage. -

@ vandalhandle - slow, but punctuated with extremely violent bits! I've seen most of Nicolas Winding Refn's movies now and I'm impressed that each of his films feel like they were made by a different director. -

For people who like God Bless America, watch Goldthwait's other film, World's Greatest Dad, without checking out any trailers or summaries. It's one of those movies that'll get spoiled in a pretty important way if you do any research on it, which is a shame because it's pretty great. -

@ DJ Stawes - yeah, I like "World's Greatest Dad" as well as "Sleeping Dogs Lie" too. I like Goldthwait as a writer/director much more than as a stand up comic. -
