Hey all, I used to post here as Harris-Ejaz a while back.
TL;DR: Post short films with good scripts - no sclice-of-life/moodpieces/interviews/documentaries/sfx Showcases.
The TL bits:
I have decided to pop my short filmmaking cherry. Unfortunately I haven't seen enough good ones, i feel, to figure out what really makes them work.
My skillset is ideally suited to stuff like The raftman's razor.
Skill, in that I can draw well/have directed episodes of animated tv show in my country / have access to skills and people required to pull something like raftman off.
*** My primary motive for doing this is I want to start applying to film schools. a few ask for a 5-minute film for application.
I feel i'm not ready to do this until i understand how to introduce and resolve a story within 5 minutes.
Also I don't wanna do somethng completely animated. wanna get my live-action cherry popped.
So yes, Advice on film schools would also be greatly appreciated. I basically wish to use them to make contacts -
I only really decided to do this yesterday, when I finished Boss and decided that's what I really want to do with my life and its time to start pursuing this seriously. So this might come off very naive, but it would seem to me that i have three main courses of action: 1. get into a US/canadian film school, use it to make contacts and take it as far as I can from there. 2. get into european filmschool, preferably a country with a low population where I could stand out. get noticed, use as a platform to move outwards. 3. somehow get noticed by someone in india, do a few years as storyboarder/production manager/assistant director until I get my shot. 4. get into pakistani film/tv industry. this i'd like to avoid because A) wanna get out of pakistan so I can finally get over my model/actress ex-girlfriend(s), B) eventually wish to be internationally renowned, and my country's a little like quicksand.
Things that might work in my advantage: I'm a pretty decent concept artist, I've directed an animated series (that still hasn't been released tho, and might not, so that sucks); i'm currently Creative Lead for an Educational games company that might hit it big in the US market in 6-12 months.
Things that will not work to my advantage: I'm a 30 year old Pakistani manchild, with no real savings.
I'm pretty clueless about scholarships, etc, but someone told me that the Art Centre in Pasadena (where Zack Snyder went) offers some on the basis of need and porfolio. So if you know of schools that offer help with tuition to gifted international students, I'd love to hear of it.
I'm approaching this with some enthusiasm as... fuck, I never thought I'd amount to anything, but am doing pretty well for myself here in Pakistan. want to see how much farther I can go.
