In the process of researching it, I have come across stuff that I am listening to at length: early Bebel Gilberto, Enter the Haggis' Live CD, The Poozies Retrospective, assorted works of Les Yeux Noirs, my older Marty Sexton stuff (as old as stuff I recorded live from performances in the early '90s), MC Solarr, and acoustic Chumbawamba.

I'm liking what I hear of The New Sin and Dabrye from Piccadilly. I am digging through E Music and finding cool stuff, from The National to some Mediaevel Baebes stuff I had not heard. When I realized that the organizer of MB was in Miranda Sex Garden I went back and listened to their stuff too. The only thing I've been giving a specific listen to is Burial - the first few times I listened I didn't really like, but after giving it a second chance I really like Untrue, and the self-titled is starting to grow on me too.

I've actually been avoiding the new Mars Volta album because when I really, really fucking like an album I tend to overplay it and grow sick of it really fast (example - I did it to the latest Tool album, my favorite band, and couldn't listen to the album for a month about 6 weeks after I got it). So I given it a good listen once in a while (usually every other day). I was also kind of waiting for the vinyl to come out, which it did recently, now I'm just waiting for the record store to GET it (bloody Newbury Comics...).

Given the direction that Al Jourgenson decided to take with the band in the last few years, these sound positively eclectic. Truthfully, I dug Ministry up to "The Land of Rape and Honey" and then it all went really boring, maybe a good single here and there ("New World Order" was good), but for the most part, it just slid into dumb noisy metal, and not the good kind.

With how things ended up, hearing those early albums were most entertaining on the level that they were stomping around, trying on different clothes to see what fit. "With Sympathy" was Al's sour soul focused through tinkly synthpop, and "Twitch" (produced by the legendary Adrian Sherwood!) laid the blueprint that Trent Reznor is STILL riding for all it's worth. Whether it was doing enough heroin to kill a horse or just getting lazy, Jourgenson just lost it musically, which is too bad, because there was a few years where I was buying everything that had his byline on it.
Side note: Years ago, I went into Wax Trax in Chicago (where Al worked for a while) and on the wall behind the counter was a copy of "With Sympathy", stuck into the wall with a huge bowie knife and the word "abortion" scrawled by Al on the cover. In listening to it after an extended time away, "Twitch" is a great album. Letting Adrian Sherwood chop up everything, run it through a distortion filter and add drums that sound like ambulances crashing was sheer brilliance and , in retrospect, a blueprint that NIN, Front 242 and Die Krupps all eventually followed. And the most twisted part? You can sing along to nearly all the album, proving that the power of "pop", even in crunchy industrial, is unbeatable. Reznor knew that, which is why he ran and scooped up Sherwood to produce most of "Pretty Hate Machine"; I say it was Trent's love letter to "Twitch".
