We begin our 'over the summer' thread with the news that Sony have just spent a lot of money they almost certainly don't have on cloud gaming service Gaikai.
Most of the people I've asked in the industry are of the opinion that cloud gaming of this sort, running the games remotely and streaming the resulting images, is how it's all going to go eventually. Gaikai and OnLive have definitely found a level at which they can turn a profit, but the bigger corps have shied away from it for now because the lack of global high speed broadband means it doesn't really scale up to the kinds of audience size they work with.
I guess Sony have decided they disagree. Expect to see this form a fairly substantial part of their next platform now, even if all they do with it is use it to allow you to play old PS1, 2 and 3 games on your new box without needing to emulate locally.
I'm playing Castlevania: Lords of Shadow right now, and I'm loving it, despite having been spoiled by Tumblr on The Twist. Good action, tough puzzles, and a shitload of characterization. Also, whipping vampires and werewolves like they paid you to do it.
The only detraction is the dialogue, which is stilted, particularly the narration lines given to Patrick Stewart to read.
Wasn't expecting much from Swords and Sworcery EP, but it's definitely turned out to be one of the stranger games I've played in a while. One minute I'm trying to find a way to makeparts of the environment chime, next minute I'm having an epic boss fight against a humming, pulsating triangle. It seems odd to me that it was originally an iPad game since I can't imagine playing it without speakers or at least headphones.
Yeah, I know, but the headphone jack isn't the thing that first occurs (at least to me) when I get out a mobile device and punch up a game. Maybe it would if I owned one that let me play such nicely-produced games.
Might just be different for me bc I ride the bus a lot (no car), so headphone is always the first thing I get out when I start up a game on iPad or iPhone.
I keep meaning to play it - I got it in the last indie bundle, and I've been looking forward to it for a while due to it's good reviews and awesome soundtrack. There's so many other games on my list, though (stupid bundles and their stupid good deals - I have 113 games on Steam now).
I played Penny Arcade - Episode 3 for a couple of hours last night. It's pretty fun! Captures the feel of older turn-based RPGs while still incorporating some new features (items and HP regenerate in between battles, for example). I don't usually go in for this sort of game, but I've been quite enjoying it. The stellar writing might have something to do with it.
Damn... played the tutorial of Project Zomboid yesterday, and happy happy joy joy game it ain't. I guess it did indeed strike some chord, since I dreamed the tutorial scenario last night in a glorious dreamtime 3D.
Downloaded Tomba! through PSN. I never owned the game when I was younger and never got to beat it, but I remember really liking the game. I've only just started it, but it's already so good!
Oh, man. I played the demo for Tomba all the time. I had many cherished demo discs for my PSX; I played the same track on Crash Team Racing over and over, played Bust-a-Move 4 long before I bought it (and I had to pay way too much for it, even though it was last-gen when I did)... I know demos are much easier to come by nowadays, but it just seemed cooler back then to buy a magazine and get to play 15 min of game that wasn't out yet.
Heh, yeah I played it over and over on the demo before I finally rented it. Same for Tomb Raider 2, played the venice level over and over until I finally tried out the game, and then became a fangirl.
Tomba! had been my white whale for ages, I always regret not buying it when it came out and then the price skyrocketed on ebay for years. I've 'had' it for a while now, through *cough*means*cough* but jumped at the chance to finally give it my money.
*edit* PSX demo discs were awesome. I had a FFVII/Bushido Blade one that I played a million times. I remember being really confused when I got the full release of FFVII and you didnt get Tifa and Barret and summoning abilities right off the bat.
I also wish they would make another Bushido Blade game, no health bars, one hit kills. The tension that game would build as you and your friend sat there waiting to make the first/right move
Final Fantasy Theatrythm is the game I'll be buying when I pick up my 3DS XL later this summer. I'm really looking forward to it in a huge way.
Currently playing the XBLA version of Spelunky. I'm sure at some point I might progress beyond the 4th level down, but it seems unlikely. A few million more attempts to go before I even begin to get tired of it.
