God, I've been out of the loop for a couple of weeks, still catching up on June's thread.

So here's page 9 from my in-progress short story I Fell In Love With A Dead Boy. It'll be 10 pages total, written drawn & lettered myself. The final scene was the first part of the story I envisioned, so that's where I've started. And it's also the only page without dialogue.

Had a live art session downtown Sacramento. Rendered a bit more at home over the weekend, articulating ideas established in the 20 minute poses. Did about 10 of these, had a great time. Trying to get over my fear of drawing around other people.

Hello, I haven't posted anything in ages since I LOST MY INTERNET AAAND ELECTRICITY (not goingto get into the details here, maybe later/elsewhere, heh)
anyway, I'm back online and this is some of the things I doodled overthe last 6 month spent in the "dark".

first: a study after paul gillon (I got one of his comics that was published in Poland many years ago)

and now some other doodlery:

hoping to buy a new tablet soon (old volito is borked, probably going to pick up a bamboo next month or so), then I shall commence with color work :)

Dork how quick are those linoleum prints to make? I have always wanted to make prints like that but never did in school. Is it a costly process?

Thanks Paul. They are all fun little experiments. I will give each drawing its own spacial rules. (Not special, seems like I have a southern american accent) but space(ial) I'm kind of a math nut as I can see number relationships very clearly and so I can break up the focal length down using gradients and filtered masks. Im just trying to have fun with my drawings lately.

Re: Printmaking.

Linocuts, woodcuts, and other relief prints are easy and not to expensive, and possible to do at home without a printing press.

Things you need:
1. The linoleum/wood/sintra Whatever you want to carve into. For your first print, I'd recommend a soft wood or a small piece of linoleum attached to a block of wood for stability.

2. Tools to carve with. My first tools were something like this. There are fancier tools out there that last longer, but you could probably get something like those for even cheaper than what it's listed for there. I've also seen work done with just scraping with needles, or exacto-knives, or other tools. Just keep in mind, the deeper and thinker your cuts, the easier it will be to ink up and print when you get to that point.

3. Ink. You'll have to decide if you want water or oil or rubber based ink. Water based ink dries really quickly, and that makes it really difficult to work with when you're printing by hand. But with oil or rubber based ink, you need some mineral spirits for cleaning up. If you go that route, be sure you've got plenty of ventilation in your work space.

4. A Brayer. For inking up the carved form.

5. A piece of glass for rolling out the ink onto. Nothing fancy.

6. Paper.

7. Something to rub against the back of the paper when it's on the inked form. Nice barrens are nice, but a wooden spoon will do just fine.

Nice to have but not necessary is a palette knife for laying out the ink and helping clean up. It's also good to have a razor blade to scrape up the last bit of ink from your glass before wiping it down with mineral spirits or rinsing it with water.

All in all, it should definitely not cost more than $40 to get what you need for making prints. And if you know any printmakers in your area, you could probably borrow a brayer and barren. And once you have carving tools and other stuff you need, you can keep using it, so future prints are just the cost of paper and ink.

I'd give yourself a day or two to carve a small lino piece. Longer if it's wood and if it's bigger. Printing time depends on how many you want to make. Always give yourself a good few hours of printing time, as whatever can go wrong will go wrong.

Oh Trishelle you are amazing. Thanks for all this, I am going to try this over the weekend.

Are you familiar with the techniques of Shin hanga Woodblock prints have always seemed so cool. The old Hokusai and Hiroshige prints too. For whatever reason I have never known anyone or seen any book on how to actually do that kind of work.

In particular I have always been deeply fascinated by Kawase Hasui

Any advice you have is appreciated.

@Paul now I want to draw some dead hipsters wearing journey shirts. Is that image going to be a banner at cons?

I was racist against Japanese people when I was a child because my only reference to them as a people was Chinese Connection with Bruce Lee. They were mean to Bruce and killed his master.

Basically, the only thing I know about Japanese woodblock prints (other then the obvious fact that they are beautiful) is, as it says at the beginning of that first wiki article, they had one master for each part of the process. One who was really good at carving, another for inking up the form and printing it. And both of those were separate from the "artist" who was the one to make the original drawing. The ones you see are complex masterworks. The thin lines they have would be so hard to carve and print without breaking. And inking up those forms without getting ink in places it wasn't supposed to be would be really hard as well.
I found it really helpful when I first started to look at German Expressionist woodcuts. They really emphasize the process used. I think generally, the first prints someone does are more likely to look like that than a Japanese print. Not quite as good, of course. But it's helpful to let it look like a print and not a drawing. Carving gives such a different mark.

Also, off subject a bit, but your drawings are lovely.

I went to my local Blick and picked up some shit. I used a cheap, thin piece of plexi for rolling out the ink on, and all told, I did about 25 prints in an hour and a half. The key is not to stab yourself with the linoleum cutting tools, like I did, and to remember that linoleum is angry and can flake off if you don't cut it properly. I needed to have a little super glue on hand for that.

Okay, I’ve become rather irked by how much the boobs-n-butt pose is so harped on, as if it’s some hilarious, impossible thing. These were done on a whim, so I apologize for the small/crappy photos and sketchy outlines. Paul I get a big kick out of the "SizerBombs", we have some similarities between our styles like line weight choices, color pallets so the bombs don't look forced, which I love.

I worked in editorial graphics during the twilight years of newspaper art departments, we had 12 artists on staff and some of the best work we did was on these "cram sheets" we passed around. Someone would start with a random character and we'd end up a week later with a full blown scene with every possible style and action going on. I've been working on my own for several years now and miss the immediate interaction with different artists. So anything I post is fair game for bombing.

And I don't know why but your bat girl totally fits with the cherry blossom trees.

We used to do comic jams at restaurants after days at comic conventions, and some of the stuff that was produced there was amazing. I miss those as well.

@Greasemonkey - Thanks! Well spotted buddy. I like Ross' approach to painting but I feel he over-references his figures and faces, so I avoid it for those. He's a massive influence on my approach to lighting though. I hadn't realised the similarities to Miller, but now that you mention it, I'm definitely influenced by his panelling, I think it's hard not to be. Some conscious influences of mine would be Dermot Power, Kev Walker (2000AD artists), Mike Mignola and Frank Quitely.

I don't usually go with a lot of black inks, but if I had to blame someone it'd be Pia Guerra's fault more than anyone elses. :P

Alex Ross has a stable of friends and family he uses as models for his work, so his over-referencing (which is not necessarily a bad thing if you're pursuing a certain style) is probably the result of his being very familiar with his models.

@mercurialblonde I really like traveling around your drawings. The one with the red glove was great started at the face, an anxious expression, who is this girl? Move to the hair and hat, thats a cool pattern, follow down the back of her head cross over to her chest and dark shirt. My eye is drawn back up to her shoulder by the strong lines and white space, a chance for my eye to rest before I wonder... What is that on her shoulder? My eye then follows down her arm, are those scales? Is that snake? Yea its a snake, oh red glove KNIFE! SHE'S GOT A KNIFE! Haha that was fun. Great drawings.

@Greasemonkey - I don't mind it too much when it comes to facial expression, it's more when he does characters in action poses, sometimes you can see they're a bit too posed and relaxed. That kinda pulls me out of it. But the guy is definitely incredible and i'm not dissing his ability.

@initiatezao - Thanks. It's all digital but i thumbnailed it all up in pencil a bit first, then blocked that in really rough on PS after. I like the Walken.

Hey everyone, long-time lurker, infrequent poster!

I'm not sure if this is an appropriate venue for self-promotion, so if it isn't please don't hesitate to tell me to take my hawkin' elsewhere.

With that being said, I was fortunate enough to have a comic book script of mine illustrated by the ever-mighty Mojokingbee and I'm now doing my part to share it with the world. Here's the promo:

On Mars nothing’s impossible.

Which is great if you’re an artist or a dreamer. But Farmer Murdock is one of the planet’s most hardboiled detectives, and as such he’s spent his entire career cleaning up messes that Earth never could’ve imagined. Lucky for Murdock, he’s only got one more mission before he’s free to spend the rest of his days sitting on the beach, digging his toes into red sand, and drinking himself into a stupor.

The catch? Murdock’s been tasked with assassinating two of the planet’s most beloved statesmen. Oh, and he has to do it in the planet’s most popular nightclub.

Written by Allen Drinkwater and illustrated by Manny Hernaez, OMNI: A God-Awful, Small Affair is twenty-six pages of neon grime, rock’n’roll science fiction, and miraculous violence.

While I'm satisfied simply to be able to say that I've managed to write a real funnybook, I'm much more satisfied in being able to look at twenty-six consecutive pages of Mojokingbee art. `Tis glorious.

I did this yesterday and decided to color it. It's another character design for the Barbarian comic. I wanted some sort of cross between Ukyo in Samurai Showdown, and Seigfried--ended up in a very peter Chung place, which I won't complain

And now for your weekly motorhome interruption- a late '60s Glastron relaxing in the shade. A simple one, but one of my favorites, fiberglass body with woodgrain side trim, it just screams that the man driving this has class.

@ Zao Entirely traditional. Split pretty evenly between brush and pen work.

I'm applying a lot more flat black inks at the moment than I have in the past, aiming for a bit more definition. Because of the way I cover the page with ink in some way or other, the effect is quite claustrophobic (which is what I usually intend). Suppose I'm opening up my pages a bit, not sure why, but I'm happy with the results.

Love the composition of the landlady btw, great character coming through there.

I drew one of my little cousins for my uncle. There's a 30+ year age difference between us because my uncle and I are only a couple of years apart in age. That got really weird when we were in high school and my friends were hitting on my uncle. Thankfully, he eventually settled down and made cute kids.

Yes I'm still drawing these. This is an oddball Ultravan Corvair based motorhome from the '60s. The flat side views are inspired by all the car spotter books from the 60's that I read in grade school

RANDOM FANDOM: DOCTOR SOLAR.....

When I was a little kid in the 1970's, my Dad bought me quite a few comics... one of my favorites amongst them was the great and magnificent Dr. Solar! I was thinking of my Dad today, a man that I greatly miss in his absence. Here is a little silly random fandom for him.

Doctor Solar is an American fictional comic book character. Originally known as Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom, he first appeared in a comic book published by Gold Key Comics in the 1960s. He has since appeared in other incarnations in books published by Valiant Comics in the 1990s, and Dark Horse Comics in the 2000s.
