    Just a reminder, that being an anti-vaccination nut is something of which you can more or less accurately say "so, you are for killing children, then?"

    HAH! I got whooping cough once. AND I was vaccinated. It sucked. I gave it to my brother, too. He was even more miserable than I was. Anyone here ever seen a 6'8" 17-year-old boy on crutches coughing so hard he was projectile vomiting?

    I have. It was hilarious.

    Edited to add: but not hilarious enough to avoid getting vaccinated.

    Olympics security poster 'gibberish' to Arabic speakers
    A train company has been criticised for producing an Olympics security poster which reads as "gibberish" in Arabic.
    First Capital Connect sent posters to 13 stations printed in English and seven other languages. But the Council for Arab-British Understanding called the Arabic lettering "ridiculous" and unreadable since the characters are not joined up and are back to front.

    As a kind of a pro-gun person myself, I'm fascinated by certain pro-gun people who use the Batman opening shootout to make a case for concealed carry laws to be opened, since obviously if everybody in that theatre was packing, nobody would have died because people could've been able to defend themselves. Why I'm not disgusted or angered, but just fascinated is the fact I can't fathom how in the fucking green and blue Earth can adult people be living in such a perfectly pure adolescent power fantasy totally removed from reality, and still be somehow functional humans apparently. I mean, wow, just wow.

    And Vorn, I think your observation hits the nail on the head. If a gun is a problem, more guns must be a proper solution. I'd say that folks were watching too many cop dramas, but I wouldn't want to blame the media for other people's idiocy. But America being America, I'm sure that we'll all still have easy access to our military grade weaponry at Wal Mart.

    Yeah, I'm fascinated by this utter removal from reality by some gun nuts. You are seeing a film, suddenly there are shots fired and smoke, you panic and whip out your gun and see a... well, cinema full of people holding guns and panicking. Of course, in the minds of these muppets everybody would just form an orderly defensive line Because They Have Been Trained In A Gun Class or something similar equally idiotic.

    Over on FB I told a friend of mine that adding more guns to the equation was probably not a solution. His response was "I can't see how it could get worse". My response:

    "Easily. *casts hands in the wavy, you-are-entering-hypothetical-fairy-land-fashion*

    Shooter comes out, drops smoke cannisters, pulls out gun, starts firing.
    People panic, begin to flee.
    Other people pull out guns and start firing at the shooter, trying to get him through crowds of running, fleeing people.

    The likelihood, with more guns and more bullets, of other people being hurt is high in that situation due to the randomness of the people moving, the increased number of people in the way, and low light. Situations like the old guy in Florida who shot the two robbers are a lot less likely to have innocent bystanders hurt because in that situation there was more open space, fewer moving bodies, better lighting, and clearer lanes of fire. Also, the old guy was maybe 20' feet from the shooters; unless the carrying citizen is in the first few rows of the theater the range is going to be worse in a theater WITH people running for their lives in the way.

    Now, is it possible that one person could've gotten off a shot and taken him down quickly? Sure. But then what happens if another citizen with a gun thinks there are *two* gunmen and opens fire on the second person?

    My issue with posts like this is that for every hypothetical situation where some gun-carrying citizen valiantly saves the day with a few quickly placed shots there are other hypothetical situations, which could be just as plausible, where shit goes horribly horribly wrong and worse."

    Spot on. I have a gun myself, and I enjoy shooting now and then, but whenever someone starts talking about guns and self defense in the same sentence, I feel like I should start backing up slowly.

    I heard the same shit right after the NIU shooting in 2008. It's this weird fucking blame the victim game that goes on 'well if I was there with MY GUN, I wouldnta died like no pansy!' After the second time hearing that after we all came back to campus I started slamming my books on a desk making the loudest BAM possible and after the persons pissed themselves just as much as everyone else I calmly told them to shut the fuck up.


    Sorry for angry/sweary/ranty just having gone through something like this myself I find it really hard to swallow the crap some people spew.

    I rather agree with this piece from the New Yorker

    Every country has, along with its core civilities and traditions, some kind of inner madness, a belief so irrational that even death and destruction cannot alter it. In Europe not long ago it was the belief that “honor” of the nation was so important that any insult to it had to be avenged by millions of lives. In America, it has been, for so long now, the belief that guns designed to kill people indifferently and in great numbers can be widely available and not have it end with people being killed, indifferently and in great numbers. The argument has gotten dully repetitive: How does one argue with someone convinced that the routine massacre of our children is the price we must pay for our freedom to have guns, or rather to have guns that make us feel free? You can only shake your head and maybe cry a little. “Gun Crazy” is the title of one the best films about the American romance with violence. And gun-crazy we remain.
