Not the Olympic site. He was on the street, where the road race was held. Also, that article is from Private Eye, a satirical magazine, so although the story is mostly true, it probably has a slant to it. -

Hong Kong police will trial cameras to record their actions on duty.
I have very mixed feelings about this: the concerns in the article about the cameras being abused (ie. to identify protesters) seem reasonable but there's also an argument that this provides more oversight of police and coudl cut odwn on abuses.
In the US, some police forces are actively seeking to criminalize people filming on-duty police.
So, yeah, I can understand the concerns about this system in an authoritarian society like Hong Kong but I can also see the benefits if proper controls are in place. -
I think the problem isn't the camera itself but who's holding it and who gets to see the footage...

I think you'll find that the courts, more and more, are actually finding in favor of defendants when police have gone after them for filming them. Many jurisdictions, in fact, have told their police force to leave photographers and filmers alone as long as they are not actually in the way of what is going on.
Now, does that stop the police from being right pricks? No, but at least it means fewer people getting criminal records. -

Egypt's President Morsi has issued a sweeping decree that realism most power from the military.
- General Tantawi, the head of the military has been ordered to retire along with the head of military intelligence and the heads of the army, navy and air force.
- Morsi has cancelled the Constitutional decree put out by the military so until a new election is held Morsi is pretty much the sole power in the land including commanding the military; being able to pass laws by decree and picking the assembly to draft a new Constitution.
Depending on who you ask this is either an elected President pushing back against military interference or an Islamist coup. The fact that most of the senior military seem to be on side with Morsi (going on what we've seen so far anyway) suggest the former. -

Out of curiousity, and I'm not at all familiar with it, do you think the demise of The Dandy a good thing?
I ask only because it seems like half of the comics in my newspaper are extremely long-running comics that run the same tired gags over and over. (E.g. Blondie, Garfield, Peanuts* and For Better or For Worse*.) I'd love to see them dumped to make space for new comics that are actually trying do do something new.
*-I actually like Peanuts, but reruns are stupid when there's so much new talent out there. I even appreciate For Better or For Worse to a certain extent (woman creator who helped change US comics) but again, the 'new' strips are basically re-warmed story lines from 20+ years ago. -

Objectively I don't know if I'd say it was a good or bad thing as much as a sign of the times.
Personally, as a guy who loves comics, it makes me sad to see it go (and, y’know – artists out of work is always shit.)
I haven't read the comic since I was a kid - and they really are children’s fare – but from passing it in the supermarket they’re not guilty of the laziness and repetition of a never ending newspaper strip.
They’ve redesigned and re-launched twice in the last ten years (the Desperate Dan in the image I posted looks nothing like MY Desperate Dan) and added new characters and strips. They were open to new talent and I've been told by artists who submitted material to DC Thomson, the Dandy's publisher, that their critiques are heavy with a lot of focus on the quality of the writing.
In an effort to capture the imagination of the kids they tried celebrity endorsed strips such as Harry Hill’s ghost written strip – which got them a lot of publicity. Harry Hill hosts/writes a very popular comedy show that’s broadcast as a lead in to Simon Cowell’s X-Factor, the most popular TV show in the UK. In my opinion Harry Hill was an absolutely perfect piece of editorial casting and it might have bought them a couple of years.
I think the creators and editorial staff went out fighting and fighting well. -

Was "The Dandy" one of those newsprint comic collections?
In elementary school, a British transfer student showed me one such. I don't recall the title. It was a very odd format. -

Yeah, when I was a kid it would have been printed on newsprint, but I think they moved to better paper stock the last few (ten + ?) years. -
