Always having a way with words, London Mayor Boris Johnson has described the Olympic excitement as spreading like a benign virus. As I can see it creeping into all the other topics so I thought perhaps we should have a specific thread for it? Keep it contained?

Yesterday I left my office to see the torch go past Olympia. It was exactly as underwhelming as you would expect: three coaches full of advertising and bored students wearing branded t-shirts, followed by a tired looking woman holding a torch. I'm feeling very "bah humbug" about the whole thing. Is anyone actually excited?

I'm the opposite to Flabyo, sorry. So much so, I honestly mis-read the first line of badbear's post as "Olympic excrement."

But it's here and happening and there's bugger all I can do about it now, so I hope it goes well. I really do. But I can't get over this lurking sense of impending WTFery and 16 days of non-stop facepalming. Kinda like Boris Johnson's bumbling persona is the spirit of the games writ large, with all The Horror that's going to entail.

I'm not fond of the actions of the Olympic organizers and how cities tend to lean over backwards for them while putting money that SHOULD be going to some much-needed programs in to a building and ad campaign they're only going to use once. The arrival of that shit always bugs me. But I don't hate the athletes who trained to be there. That's what's kind of been bugging me about some of the protests, the ire towards the athletes instead of the organizers.

I mean, it may be a corporate gangbang omnishambles, but it's OUR corporate gangbang omnishambles. So fuck off, Romney.

I'm kind of looking forward to the WTFery, might enjoy some of the games, hoping the sponsors kill and eat each other. @Alan - that would be the local branch of the legendary Critical Mass
LOCOG clearly set out to taunt them by scheduling the opening ceremony for the last friday of the month.

They've aggregated some fresh press, and a couple of youtubes of arrests being made, at that link already. People seem so desensitized and apathetic about the subjugation of the city anyway that I sort of doubt this will raise more than a couple eyebrows. Police are already handwaving it.

I'm with flecky on the cash-fueled corruption thing, though probably not the popsicles. I did feel a sort of relief when it was all over and there was no dimensional portal being torn open by a hungry elder god. If relief is the right word.

Watch for an hour and you'll have something to talk to your therapist about next week.
In its relentless effort to provide the dramatic human interest stories behind the games -- we need something to do while those athletes are just standing around -- NBC seems to have dug up every sad, heart-wrenching anecdote they could find. @ Fishelle: It's the radioactive waste (thorium & radium) buried on the site decades ago (and only revealed because of a Freedom of Information request) which makes it such a popular spot.

And I bet you thought all those weird opening ceremony creations were puppets, not generations of mutated pearly kings & quuens.

As for knocking it down and building a new one, just had a quick Google to check no new developments had taken place since I last heard about it but as far as I can tell, there've been so many legal wrangles about who gets first dibs on using it, no-one's got it yet. I think, whoever does take over, they'll be removing the upper bit completely, to reduce capacity, but the main, solid bits, are staying - but I think that was planned from the outset. The real knickers-in-a-twist bit is whether the running track stays or not. The football clubs want it gone, so the crowd is closer to the pitch, but those pesky athletic bods keep interfering by applying to host tournaments there, contradicting what the majority of potential future-owners have said. It's already scuppered one wannabe world class jog-a-thon in 2015.

Overall, the Olympic stadium's a shining example of good, old-fashioned Britfuckuppery. They've only had 7 years to sort all this out, after all.

I feel a little sorry for the Chinese swimmer. That kind of time improvement from race to race is entirely possible when you've not even turned 17 yet. Mark Foster showed his times from that age on the BBC last night and he did pretty much the same thing she's doing. As for her beating Lochte and Phelps times on that last freestyle 50, so did the British swimmer Becky Adlington in the race she won Bronze...

She's been dope tested 4 times in the past year, and twice already at the game themselves. If she ain't clean, then the Chinese have found something the tests don't pick up.

Just annoys me that whenever a new talent emerges everyones first thoughts are 'must be cheating'.

If you want to see cheating then look at what happened in the Badminton last night. The Chinese and Koreans playing in a doubles match both wanted to LOSE so they'd not finish top of the group and avoid playing the favourites in the knockout stages. They weren't even being subtle about it.

 @Oddcult,

Problem with using the consequentialistic positioning argument, that instead of focusing on winning their individual match they focused on getting into a better position for the next heat, is that it obviously didn't work, because they were disqualified. If we're going to focus on the result of their actions rather than the actual actions of the players, then we have to look at the fact that they were disqualified and thus lost. Which means they didn't do their best or use the best tactic. It's the problem with most consequentialistic arguments - are we looking at the actual results or the results that could be assumed based on what is known about the system, they're attempting to game? They were disqualified, so that's the actual results. The results based on rational assumptions seems to suggest that the Olympics and the Badminton World Federation would be dismayed by their attempt to exploit the system and given that there are rules, deontological rules, that dictate that they have to give it their all in each match, this seems to suggest that it is not a viable tactic, even in this regard.

Because either way, it seems unlikely that they'd be allowed to continue and thus it was a remarkably poor and illogical decision.

I was in the same mind space as Warren in watching the closing ceremonies. I know not to watch a multi-nation broadcast and expect subtlety and left of center reasoning, but each time they picked a good artist, they had to re-construct it, and the artists who did participate made me think "Oh, wouldn't it be cooler if they got FILL IN THE BLANK instead, that would be so much more impactful!" (Exceptions being Madness and the Pet Shop Boys, who both seemed to know exactly how to pull it off).

I saw Fatboy Slim and thought "well, good for him, but wouldn't it be cool to have Roni Size or Goldie or Tricky up there?" I really didn't have a problem with George Michael, as global pop is one of Britain's best exports, but man, that 'stache was killing me. Overall, I would have liked to see more focus on the innovators rather than the adapters, but again, what did I expect at an Olympic ceremony? It's not a music festival. But it was a missed opportunity to show how much cool stuff the UK has brought to the world music scene.

From Mike Wise of the Washington Post:

The second is of a woman who finished her 100-meter heat in less than 15 seconds after eight years of convincing her family and her nation that it was okay for a Muslim woman to leave the house and run as fast as her conviction would take her. Just four reporters, all of us from different countries, were standing there underneath the stadium, straddling a hip-high barrier separating the athletes and journalists, and I don’t think any of us was waiting for her when she walked up to us.

“My taxi driver throw me out on the street when I told him I was training for Olympics,” said Tahmina Kohistani, Afghanistan’s only woman at the Games, in the halting English she had learned through mail-order language courses. “He said, ‘Get behind the man. You are disgrace to Muslim women.’ My coach fought other men outside the stadium where I train because they do not think I should run. But my country will remember me forever one day. They will see I am the right one and other girls will watch me and I will tell them, ‘Come, run with me. Run with me, Tahmina.’”

About 25 minutes later, after we heard the most harrowing journey anyone could have taken to run 100 meters at the Games, one of the male reporters began weeping. He finally said, “You’re a hero. You’re a hero to your country and women everywhere.” Beneath her hijab, Tahmina sheepishly said, “Thank you,” and began to cry. We were all choked up and didn’t know what else to say.

As I type this now, I still don’t know what to say, except that I knew in that very moment, for one of the few times in my job, I was in the presence of a greatness and a courage as real and inspiring as anything I’ve ever seen in sports or life.

“Hey, who was that?” a colleague of mine from the United States asked.

I opened my mouth, but I couldn’t talk. I just walked a few steps away, turned away from him, and started crying — for a woman who finished 31st in the world in her event. A minute later, when he came to see if I was okay, he asked again, “Who was that?”

I swallowed hard and said, “That’s why I came here.”

Letter to the editor: Olympics showed too much flesh

We’ve enjoyed past Olympic openings and closings, and some of the sports.
But the quality of the past two or three Olympics has been a great disappointment.
The entertainment of this latest Olympics was dark, loud, sexualized with scanty clothes and revealing cleavage on women, and with disturbing pagan noise. Connecting children, beds plus frightening villains made one think of pedophiles.
The black and red colors of sex and violence dominated most of the closing. The nuns were obviously there to mock Christianity while one could only think of Satan being glorified.
The comical entrance of the queen was one of the few bright spots.
Past Olympics had spectacular bright, cheerful and family-style entertainment but the English seem to have put teens who worship Satan in charge. It was disgraceful and we suffered through them hoping for some improvement.
Some of the clothes the competitors wore also reflect the sexualized entertainment.
The male swimmers look unprofessional with their hip-huggers trunks stopping just above their pubic region, as also the women’s track and volleyball with their underwear-bikinis.
All are offensive and degrading. These styles are also now worn in our schools and colleges, which no one seems to have objected to.
The girls’ gymnastics also are sexualized in their swimsuits and are too tight around the buttocks plus partially expose their butts.
We had enough with all the sexuality which took away any enjoyment to watch so we only watched the entertainment.
Rio Di Janeiro has nothing better to offer with more dark juvenile entertainment and women parading around sexually, displaying cleavage and little talent.

Dennis P. & Rosemarie Mitchell
Duluth
