I don't think that is true. Even in the article you link to it says:
"The fresco is not thought to be very valuable, but has a high sentimental value for local people."
The church received a grant to restore it just before the botched paint job was discovered. I have not read anywhere that this grant was rescinded. I do not think the grant was in the millions.
@Greasemonkey - I had a mate who had one of these years ago. He also used to collect funnelwebs with his bare hands. Never got bitten, which is bloody amazing cos I've had the bastard things come after me all fang waving aggro when I've done nothing more than turn on a light. I think he had to give it up in the end when the BES got out of its tank and was loose in the flat for a few days. His wife drew the line at that point.
Steve Irwin used to pick up huge spiders on his show. I remember him picking up some giant mouse-eating spider he'd found, and waiting to see it take his finger off.
