    @twentythoughts - This is the why and wherefore: a DIY touch up of an ages old painting completely screwed it over. The old lady who did it said that it 'got a bit out of hand...' and cost the church owners millions.

    I don't think that is true. Even in the article you link to it says:

    "The fresco is not thought to be very valuable, but has a high sentimental value for local people."


    The church received a grant to restore it just before the botched paint job was discovered. I have not read anywhere that this grant was rescinded. I do not think the grant was in the millions.

    The botched painting is itself becoming a kind of tourist attraction.

    I found a site called Cute Home Pets. It has a page on home-rearing the Goliath Bird-Eating Spider (which, I hardly need to add, comes from Australia).

    @Greasemonkey - I had a mate who had one of these years ago. He also used to collect funnelwebs with his bare hands. Never got bitten, which is bloody amazing cos I've had the bastard things come after me all fang waving aggro when I've done nothing more than turn on a light. I think he had to give it up in the end when the BES got out of its tank and was loose in the flat for a few days. His wife drew the line at that point.
