    #transhumanism

I started a thread on transhumanism, hoping to get things going. This seemed to be the place for it. But I guess I have to accept that Whitechapel just ain't what it was and this need to find all the grinder informations PDQ is a task some three years too late.

But... if anyone wants to toss information my way I would deeply appreciate it. Steve Toase pointed me to grinding.be I'm tracking down down the *many* directions the wikipedia page goes in. But if anyone has any insights etc, I'd love to hear it. I don't know where the specialists on the subject went off to, but if you could point me to them (or them to me) I'd appreciate that too. (And for ease of not messing with thread structure please post to the transhumanism thread.)

    thanks!

Antipodean unsolicited genre fiction manuscripts will be accepted by HarperVoyager in October - I know most of you guys are above the equator but it might be of some use to someone.

    Hi Everyone,

    #androidroot

Trying to root a Chinese Android tablet to run 4.0 rather than 2.3.

This page has a downloadable file from the manufacturer: http://www.szsanei.com/support_down.asp?id=645

But it doesn't seem to have any instructions as to what you do once you've downloaded the file.

Rebooting the device doesn't seem to work - any ideas?

As with any back-to-school endeavour: start small. Find a local workshop or writer's group that will simulate a writing/criticquing seminar -- all the peer pressure with less cost. Try to do NaNoWriMo. Take a night course from a continuing-education faculty. Do it part-time from your regular life, just to see if it's a welcome break from your routine, or an extra pressure on your busy schedule, or what. That is useful data (but no, I have no idea what it might mean).

I found my two night courses last year the Favouritest Part Of My Week. Hence, grad school. But that's because I Belong In School. It's a fact now. YMMV.

#CWM - Thanks for the advice everyone! I've been contemplating this stuff all week. Gonna test out the water, see what the temperature is. Night courses/workshops, here I come.

    #HauntedKeyboard

So, I'm having trouble playing either EVE or WoW lately because my mouse and keyboard are behaving strangely. My computer seems to think that the left mouse button or random keys are pressed. So I'll try to move the mouse arrow around but because the PC thinks the left button is pressed, the game world rotates instead. Or the wasd keys will randomly input and my character will start walking around. If I open of guild chat, you can see the random keys being input. It's also happened out of game, where I'll move the mouse around and all the desktop icons get selected, as if I had the left mouse button held down. It happens inconsistently, like just now I played WoW for about an hour no problem, and then all of a sudden it started up. Then it'll go back to being normal, and then randomly kick in again. First time it happened i thought it was just the mouse, and so I changed it to a different mouse and it kept happening, so I imagine if I changed the keyboard the problem would still persist. The keyboard and mouse are both plugged in via USB. Any ideas? Google isn't helping bc the searches all result in people who got hacked and other people are typing in full sentences, in my case its just random keys being pressed and the left mouse button being stuck as if it's pressed.

Are the keys sticking on or are they just randomly typing? Is it all keys or just a few?

I seem to recall having a problem sort of like this a long time back and I think it was an accessibility setting being weird...

Random typing, and it happens with the left mouse button and the wasd area of the keyboard, from what I've seen. When I was in guild chat earlier it typed in "WdqaWDssssddDD"

It appears that if I quit WoW and restart, that fixes it sometimes. But it's also happened in EVE. I'm starting to wonder if the simultaneous use of the mouse and wasd for movement is causing some sort of glitch while in games.

I don't have specific experience on this, but standard troubleshooting is to start small: switch the keyboard next, for a few days or until it happens again; play around with settings to see what you can see; always restart a bunch.
Does it always start in the games? Or after the games have run? My laptop touchpad would get overheated and react weird, but only six hours after a restart.

I'll try keyboard next, but I'm not too hopeful because when it first happened I thought it was just the mouse, so I changed it and the problem persisted. The first time I noticed it it happened just before I launched the game, and today it happened about an hour or two into the game. I think it started after the PC did a windows update a few days ago, prior to that we had been playing a LOT of Diablo 3 and I hadn't noticed the problem at all.

edited to add: The PC is running Windows 7. Did another search and it seems like a few people had this issue after various Windows 7 updates, but I can't seem to find a consistent solution for it and most of the replies are really incoherent.

It probably goes without saying, but you have scanned your machine for viruses and spyware, right?

egh, no but I should. We literally only ever use it for gaming either through steam, or to play Diablo 3, EVE, and more recently WoW. We rarely if ever use it to go online or download anything. Everything else we do on our macbooks.

Best to do it anyway - if you visited just a single infected website with your machine in a vulnerable state you could have all kinds of crap hiding on there, any of which could be messing with your I/O drivers.

And knowing that the machine is clean makes general troubleshooting easier anyway.

Sounds like it's the most commonly used keys that are playing up which would really (to my mind) imply the mechanism is worn. That doesn't explain the mouse, though.

    Certainly a weird one.

Considering you can buy cheap keyboard and mouse packs for around $10-15, it should be fairly easy to check whether it's a mechanical fault.

Alas, don't know anyone in the UK/traveling to the UK any time soon. I haven't been a part of the BME community proper in over a year after issues, but perhaps could check around there? If I recall, they had a sort of listing of professionals. Anyone who can do silicone implants well can do a magnet one too.

PS: I am so getting one put in next month here in NYC after years of stalling!

#androidroot: There's usually some combination of buttons you have to hold when booting the device to get into either Recovery or the Bootloader (there should be a different button combination for both of those). Once you're in Recovery you should be able to flash a different ROM, depending on what the recovery img is. The file you've linked is a RAR, which is kind of weird already, since ROMs are supposed to be in ZIP format.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Sanei tablets have been picked up by anyone on XDA, so there's no forum there that would have more answers.

#universal shareable media library list thingy

So my wife is a little bit OCD about organizing and cataloging. She's already got a Librarything, and uses various other media sites. Right now she's trying to catalog a bunch of multimedia stuff together for personal and academic purposes, and finding that none of the sites seem to really suit her needs. The book sites only have book, the music sites only have music, none of them like to let you like to just *anything*, and the social networking aspects tend to be weak.

Tumblr would be perfect if it allowed proper list views, and the ordering of said lists. Right now she's looking at Listly and Amazon's media library. Any other mad curators out there having something better?

I actually tried a different keyboard today, and plugged it into a different usb slot, and it still happened. It's definitely not the keyboard or the mouse, I'm convinced that something in the software got messed up during the last windows 7 update, since that's when it started happening.
