I love Top Ten Lists, and this looks to me to be the place to see some interesting ones.

Before moving on to books and music, how about Top Ten Movies Of All Time? Or, if you're feeling ambitious, Top Ten Movies Of All Time in every genre? Or any genre. What do you like?

Lists should be personal and quirky rather than definitive: instead of AFI, think movies you wouldn't want to go to your desert island without -- which is to say, Citizen Kane shouldn't be there if given a choice between seeing Citizen Kane or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 100 times you'd opt for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. There should be at least one truly embarrassing guilty pleasure per ten films named, and pet films that you have personally rescued from complete obscurity are worth extra points. The best reason to read a Top Ten list is the off chance that you might read about something you've never heard about, and it's particularly interesting to read a title you've never encountered before (or never bothered to see) in good company with a bunch of interesting films you are aware of.

And yes, a director's cut of Exorcist III would be great, but Morgan Creek already completely misunderstood what Blatty was trying to do and I don't think they're ever gonna come around on that. At least we'll always have that great monologue about the fish swimming back and forth.

JaredRules, oddly enough, while Cronenberg is my favourite living director, Eastern Promises left me cold. A huge disappointment with one great ball-flinging fight scene. The rest of the movie plays out like a variation on A History of Violence without the focus. Fans of Deadwood should have a look at Warlock, based on the novel by Oakley Hall (which I believe Thomas Pynchon once said was his favourite book), because Deadwood is basically Warlock as a continuing series. (1979) (part of Hollis Frampton's Magellan Cycle...avant/underground, won't show up on IMDB, but just a heartbreaking ten minutes of movie. Don't pay attention to descriptions you read online, they all focus on the formalist academic side of the film and not the fact that it's the most moving cinematic tribute to a parent that one will ever see.)
.THE LION IN WINTER (1968)
.FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (1998) (Sometimes this is Brazil)
.RUSHMORE (1998)
.WAYNE'S WORLD (1992)
.BATMAN RETURNS (1992) (Often times this is Ed Wood)
.RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981)
.HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940) (This is actually a recent discovery...don't know why it took me so long to see this film, but it's utterly magnificent. Sharp, smart, and brutally vicious...now I have to dig out Front Page, the play it was based on...)
.DEAD MAN (Sometimes this is every other Jim Jarmusch film.)

Oh wait, is that 11? Damn.

In more or less correct order...Many of these I've seen at a second-run theater at midnight, which is the best way to see most of them, I believe.

1) Donnie Darko - no movie has affected me in quite the same way, and at the same time immediately put Mary McDonnel and Jake Gyllenhaal on my favorite actors list
2) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Jim Carey is, I think, one of the best actors in Hollywood, but unfortunately you don't see him do this very often. Simon Birch is the other one I can think of off the top of my head.
3) Brazil - The art design, the writing, the sheer silliness at parts, and the fragility of the movie blends into an extremely touching film
4) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - I must have watched this movie at least ten times my first year at college. I've come to realize I spend an awful lot of time in Bat Country, and I've never done drugs in my life.
5) Clerks - One of the most quotable films of all time, and the first movie that I really sat down to analyze. It was great fun then, and it still is whenever I watch it.
6) The Empire Strikes Back - The definition of the 1980s, as far as I'm concerned.
7) The Boondock Saints - The first time I saw this movie it set my Irish blood boiling. It is still simmering.
8) Serenity - I'm a browncoat through and through, so this movie was candy for me. Bitter, sour candy with at least three razor blades hidden in it, but candy nonetheless.
9) Once Upon a Time in the West - Singlehandedly made me fall in love with westerns.
10) Ghost in the Shell - Singlehandedly made me fall in love with cyberpunk.

I'm seeing a lot of overlap on these lists. Great minds, I guess.
