I love Top Ten Lists, and this looks to me to be the place to see some interesting ones.

Before moving on to books and music, how about Top Ten Movies Of All Time? Or, if you're feeling ambitious, Top Ten Movies Of All Time in every genre? Or any genre. What do you like?

Lists should be personal and quirky rather than definitive: instead of AFI, think movies you wouldn't want to go to your desert island without -- which is to say, Citizen Kane shouldn't be there if given a choice between seeing Citizen Kane or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 100 times you'd opt for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. There should be at least one truly embarrassing guilty pleasure per ten films named, and pet films that you have personally rescued from complete obscurity are worth extra points. The best reason to read a Top Ten list is the off chance that you might read about something you've never heard about, and it's particularly interesting to read a title you've never encountered before (or never bothered to see) in good company with a bunch of interesting films you are aware of.

I'll bite, though I have difficulty ordering them.

    The Matrix
    Die Hard
    The Incredibles
    Singin' In The Rain
    The Big Lebowski
    Dazed and Confused
    His Girl Friday

With a special mention to Fight Club and All The President's Men. And about fifty others. Not a very adventurous list, I'll admit, but I love them nonetheless.

    1) Wong Kar-Wai's Fallen Angels
    2) Holy Mountain
    3) Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
    4) Nekromantik
    5) The collected short films of Maya Deren
    6) Lord of the Rings Trilogy
    7) Can all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer be one of them? It's like a movie, but really long.
    8) Evil Dead (or Evil Dead 2, but not both on the same list)
    9) Blade Runner
    10) Stick It, just because there should be a teen sports triumph movie on every top ten movies list.

These aren't what I would say are the top ten movies of all time, but if I only owned ten movies, I think these would be them. If you asked me at a different time, the list might be very different.

Hmm, 30 minutes later, and already I realize I forgot to fit in Memento...and Fight Club actually.. hmm.
  2.  (108.9)
Seven seasons of Buffy can only count if Season 2 of Millennium can count.
    • CommentTimeDec 2nd 2007
I came close to really liking Millenium a few times, but in the end it always felt lacking.
Maybe I should watch it again..

A lot of those seem to be guilty pleasures...

Jared is right. Let's try genres.

Top Ten Favourite Horror Films, in no particular order (except that the first is definitely my favourite):

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
    Cat People (1942)
    Nosferatu (1922 & 1979)
    Pulse (2001 - Kiyoshi Kurosawa)
    Daughters of Darkness
    Dr. Jekyll and Miss Osborne
    Jacob’s Ladder
    Legend of Hell House
  5.  (108.18)
If we're doing genres, I'll do film noir:

    Double Indemnity
    The Big Sleep
    The Third Man
    Scarlet Street
    Blast of Silence
    Night of the Hunter
    The Big Heat
    Out of the Past
    The Sweet Smell of Success

I won't do Noir, but I will do:

The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933)
    The Maltese Falcon
    The Big Sleep
    The Long Goodbye
    Kiss Me Deadly
    The Drowning Pool
    Angel Heart
Rising Sun (and that would be my guiltiest pleasure on this list.)
    True Confessions

    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
    Exorcist III
    The Exorcist
    The Thing
    The Shining
    The Descent
    Night of the Living Dead

Again, the least exciting list ever. Perhaps I'm not thinking about this enough. I just tried to do a sci fi list and my brain locked up.
