hm. just showed the jehovah's witness vid to my fiancee, who's deaf and was raised as a JW before she left at 16. she mentioned that the signers in the video have almost identical signing styles, ...

she mentioned that the signers in the video have almost identical signing styles, which would indicate they have been entrenched within the JW community for a very long time & only socialize with each other (not uncommon, and encouraged) and/or they have been coached.

another thing that shocked her, is the expressions of the signers when describing the acts of masturbation. in ASL, the expressions are actually normal, much like when you adjust the intonation of your voice to emphasize a word or quote. it's just off-putting seeing them on JWs, who are normally very very very conservative with any mention of sex or pleasure, and avoid showing any emotion about it.

when she grew up & hit puberty, the elders and her parents never talked about masturbation, her mother gave her a thick hardcover pink youth guidebook for JW teenagers, which was the extent of her sexual education & advice from them. in one of the sections, the book explained that masturbation was not allowed (surprise, surprise), and in the video above, the guy said masturbation is bad because you would be focusing inwardly on yourself & that itself is very selfish.
