@Greasemonkey now that's a political candidate who's campaign speaks to me.
@RenThing @screaming meat The fairly graphic pose of the dinosaurs leads me to believe it's a joke, but during my time as an active evangelical christian, I heard more than a few hardline creationists make claims that were just as out there.
@draug & @icelandbob the internet says it is, in fact, Typha:
This is Typha Latifolia, commonly known as Cattail. Cattails are used in Latin America in both cooking and traditional medicin.
Rubbing the stem, causes the potassium and nitrogen to oxygenate within stored mitochondria chambers, leading to rapid expulsion of collagenous spaces between the xylem and the phloem.
The same effect occurs when the plant is subject to high levels of heat. This led to a disaster in Le Paz, Bolivia, 1981. Tens of thousands of Cattail stems were being kept in a massive warehouse when a heatwave caused rapid expansion. Over a hundred workers suffocated when the warehouse was suddenly filled by expanding cattails seeds.
Mind you, I found this on a forum post after google image searching that gif.
I just showed that Typha gif to Edgar, he says that there were cattails all over Poland when he lived there as a child and that they do, in fact, do that when rubbed, and he has experienced it first hand. Apparently the person in that gif is very good at it >__> I guess there is actually a technique to doing it well, he says he's never been able to get one to explode quite that much (oh god the euphemisms in this post).
