    @SteveT -

A hard sci fi author (I think it was Gregory Benford but I wouldn't swear to it) had a more philosophical "proof" of the simulated universe theory:

Rather than trying to find signs that we are being simulated, all you need to do is demonstrate that it's possible to simulate an entire working universe inside our universe. With that proof, it's incredibly unlikely that our universe is the first one to simulate another; we are much more likely to be somewhere in a matryoshka doll of universes, each simulated by the next universe up, simulating the next universe down.

The disadvantage is that it doesn't prove anything, but the advantage is that it's independent of the nature of the simulation.

Ancient Plankton tied to Obama Win in Southern Counties

Those counties, as he writes here, went for Obama because trillions and trillions and trillions of teeny sun-loving creatures died there. He's talking about plankton. That's why the Republicans can't carry those counties. Blame plankton.

@236, SteveT - for me, the definitive story about sims-all-the-way-down is the 1964 novel Simulacron-3 by Daniel Galouye. Though it's kinda dated now, it pushes that idea harder than The Matrix ever dared. Was adapted twice - once by Fassbinder(!) in the 70s for German TV as Welt am Dracht (World On A Wire) and in 1999 as the film The Thirteenth Floor. I waffle about both these at Weaponizer as part of the Mason Lang FIlm Club series.

The Thirteenth Floor had a nice neo-noir atmosphere, and should've done much better than it did. Mostly it suffered from poor timing, being released around the same time as Dark City (also awesome) and The Matrix.

This is a sneaky way to try and clear national budget deficits.

Woman in south-west France receives telephone bill for 11,721,000,000,000,000 euros (nearly 12 quadrillion)

Cheers 256, Cat Vincent and Greasemonkey. Will follow them up.

I'd recommend Pi as well, as a bit of a side alley.

This is the big news on the internet today, it seems. I for one am perfectly happy to have people held accountable for trolling.

Ijust find it interesting that Gawker/Chen have this huge vendetta against Reddit but like half of their stories are ganked straight from reddit.

Looks to me more like Gawker/Chen has a problem with Reddit being a haven for paedophiles and other sexual predators.

As one of the commenters on the Chen article says no one is stopping him saying and posting what he likes, they've just stopped him posting what he likes anonymously. Publish and be damned not publish and hide behind burner accounts.

So, I just watched a man throw himself out of a hot air balloon at nearly 40km up.

This is a thing that happened.

I must admit, when they get the thermal camera on him as he's falling and you can see he's spinning really fast I really didn't fancy his chances, but he brought it under control as soon as there was enough actual air for him to be able to control it.

He's going to run out of crazy things to do after this surely?

Im not saying the article was right or wrong (could care less) I just find it funny that if you read gawker on a regular basis they will shit over reddit as a steaming cesspool of the internet that no one should go to in one post then the next 3 are reposts from stuff that popped up on reddit before they found it.

@ Flabyo - Am I the only one who was hoping that he'd be mutated by some weird space radiation and come back as one of the X men?

    Definitely not.

On the other hand, I also kept thinking that he was jumping in the wrong direction...

Nah. The next big fad: personal re-entry shields. Let's make it a 100 kilometers!

Yeah, there's been some work done on those already, but nobody crazy enough to try it...

It was nice to see so much love for Joe Kittinger, too.
