#NINRelationshipTest

Greetings all;

A friend of mine had a simple meme that I'm trying to recreate as a Tumblr post: The NIN Pretty Hate Machine relationship test. The concept is simple - there are 10 songs on Pretty Hate Machine (first release). You and your potential partner each total up how many songs you personally identify with on the album. Then you compare scores to determine the percentage likelihood of your relationship being doomed.

Unfortunately, I don't understand stats. There are two potential dimensions of analysis: ratio, and points. If you have a PHM score of 1 and your partner has a PHM score of 10, that's a .1 ratio and easy to express. However, if you identify with 5 and your partner identifies with 5, compared to a couple where both identify with 10, those are both 1.0 ratios. So the total score should also factor in as a dimension of analysis - a 10/10 PHM score with 20 PHM points total is MUCH more doomed in a Sid and Nancy way than a 1/1 score and 2 points total.

I'm completely drawing a blank on how to express this properly in a simple easy to understand Tumblr level scale. The Doomedness depends on both the ratio and the point score. I'm guessing I really need to do it as a graph or scatter chart?

 @Fin - Seems to me that the simple way would be to use a graph where one axis is the ratio number, and the other is the number of tracks. The relationship score could be displayed as a rectangle on the graph bounded by those two numbers; the bigger the area, the doomedier it is. (There's a name for this sort of area-comparison chart, but I can't quite think what it is.)

However...

Isn't there a third variable here? If Person A likes 5 tracks, and Person B likes 5, should we not be taking into account the overlap of those two numbers? If both A and B identify with the same five tracks, that seems a potentially very different situation to if they each identify with a different half.

This quantity ("collisions"), equal to the number of tracks appearing on both A and B's lists, could be shown by intensity of the rectangle's shading.

So the worst case scenario for a PHM visualization would be a perfect square (ratio 1, score 10) of pure black (10 collisions).

Or something.
