    The final quarter of the year is a dangerous time for videogame companies. For some reason publishers still think they need to cram all their big releases into the small October/November window in order to make any money.

    This leads to too many games for any one person to buy, and often good games will simply fall through the cracks (often taking their developers with them) simply because they decided to go face to face with the Call of Duty's of this world rather than wait until the Spring to launch.

    So anyway, holiday madness is upon us.

    For me, the first title I'm picking up from this rush will be the XCOM reboot. All signs point to this being essentially my perfect game.

    (It's also out on the same day as the game I've spent the past two years on, Fable: The Journey, but there's not exactly much demographic overlap there so I'm cool)

    Later in the month I'll be getting Assassin's Creed 3, but beyond that I think I'll let reviews and word of mouth guide me on games like Dishonoured, Black Ops 2 etc...

    I am so inordinately excited about XCOM. I'm not blind to the apparent shortcomings from reading about the demo, etc etc, but I am SO excited. I haven't been this excited for a game realise since... Well, I can't actually remember. I was excited for God of War 3, Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft. But this... It's one of the defining games of my adolescence. I would videotape my brother playing it for hours, then I'd break onto his computer to play it when he was out. It was the first thing I installed on my own first computer.

    I still love and play the original, but I'm ready for a modern take. XCOM looks like the right stuff so far.

    This XCOM video from Gametrailers is the first I've seen of someone just playing the game. It'll sell it to anyone who liked the original as it shows boh what they've changed and what they've kept.

    That actually makes me a little bit horny. I see pretty much all the beats I would expect from an old-school mission, with the added bonus of an enemy jumping in BEHIND your troops to try to mess with them. I didn't think I could get more excited, but I am shaking right now. Might just be the coffee.

    My brother and I, when they came out, bought all of the original XCOM games (and I just about peed myself when Steam offered them all for $7 a few years ago and I jumped on that in an instant). We're incredibly excited about the new game.

    Transformers: Fall of Cybertron was full of very satisfying set pieces and gameplay, but holy cow did it end abruptly. I guess it's one of those where the campaign is just the training mode for multiplayer, and I don't dig that.

    I'll be trading it in for Darksiders 2 or Dishonored.

    just scored DEAD ISLAND for very cheap, hope its fun enough for me to get my moneys worth.

    NiGHTS, one of my favorite games of all time gets its 16 year HD facelift tomorrow!!!

    as far as the holiday rush, HITMAN (another old favorite) and DISHONORED are about the only things on the slate that look up my alley...however i usually get games like 7 -12 months late so those are more like Games Of The Future for me.

    I'm playing a lot of FTL lately. It's like a space-roguelike with a time limit, and it's both incredibly compelling and frustrating. You WILL die. A LOT.

    I was playing FTL the other day at work when my lead tapped me on the shoulder and got me to turn around - 30-50% of the monitors I could see had a Kestrel on them.
    It was beautiful.

    I love it when that happens in an office. I remember one time some years back when the lunchtime Quake CTF matches were interrupted for an entire week while everyone played through HalfLife.

    Bit of a mixture in the office lunchtimes here at the moment. Lot of people playing DotA and LoL, some playing the new WoW expansion.

    When Diablo III came out, as soon as a break hit, my entire former office would degenerate into a storm of mad clicking from every direction.

    If you have a PS3, I can't recommend Tokyo Jungle strongly enough. All the humans have disappeared from the world and, years later, the animals have overrun the streets of Tokyo. Starting from an initial choice of a pomeranian or deer, you eat, breed, fight, and complete missions to unlock new creatures to play as.

    It's also more than a little disturbing, depending on your fondness for animals. I see cats as friendly little weirdo-beasts. Any random carnivore sees them as both a competitor for and a source of food.

    Also, I learned that a pomeranian doesn't stand much chance against an alligator. Who knew?

    Tokyo Jungle is great, I am pretty terrible at it but I love every moment of it.

    I wish I could buy it a few more times just so it will be a success and Sony will see there is a market for weird 'Japanese' games here in the west

    So I bought Borderlands 2 on release day and I'm up to level 10. Damn you 12 hour days, 6 days a week.

    I still need a new gaming laptop after the giant Toshiba I had died, hence all the overtime.

    A new baby could factor into both things, as well.

    I like Borderlands 2, but I feel it has the same problems for me that Borderlands 1 did. For instance, when I'm driving along and I get attacked by a cloud of Rakk, I get afraid. Not because they have any chance of killing (or even injuring) me, but because each swarm edges my experience points up towards the point where I have to skip missions just to get back up to the expected difficulty level. In no other game have I ever been so desparate not to level up.

    Tomba is finally on European PSN. The US version, too, which is awesome, since that means it's properly optimized. Yay!

    Neither that nor Resident Evil 2 are currently transferable to the Vita. Boo!

    Yeah, the GOP in Maine isn't too bright. Demonizing video game playing? Seriously? World of Warcraft is mainstream. I live in Maine, albeit Portland, which is almost a different state from Augusta and northern parts, but even so. This isn't an attack that's going to do much but make people laugh at the attackers.

    Still voting Angus King, though.
