I liked both the Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue pilots. Overall I liked Last Resort better, mostly because of Andre Braugher, though the SEAL guy explaining to the drug dude and thugs the precise order and methodology behind their deaths if they kept pushing him was pretty cool too. That said, I think 666 Park Avenue probably has longer legs. You can tell all kinds of horror, thriller and corruption stories within that story space. I'm concerned that Last Resort could easily find Braugher's character saying.

"...and so, if we are not granted a resupply of Almond Kisses, we will target Hershey Pennsylvania with a nuclear missile. Test us and we will all be chocolateless together."

Absolutely agreed. It felt like proper old school Dwarf, even down to getting their own canon wrong and making no sense whatsoever. :D I felt the cast especially holds it up. One would expect, after all this time, that they'd have lost some of their vitality and groove, but it's like they were never gone. You don't feel their age at all.

I'm now trying to get a hold of the casting director so I can wedge myself into the show somehow. Only point of contact I've found so far is Twitter, which is a bit weird.

Okay, all caught up on Person of Interest. It improved vastly after the first 10 eps or thereabouts, but still continues to bug me; especially as it is improving in so many ways. If there was a drinking game and you had to take a shot every time a baddie gets shot and/or a good guy gets rescued at the last minute, you'd be merrily drunk at the end of an episode.

It's like a really nice spy/cyberpunk series with training wheels -- a spy show where people keep thinking aloud and explaining what they're doing really doesn't do itself any favours.

I mean, Root going with the name Turing as an alis. Really?

In many ways it reminds me of the first season of Fringe, you can kind of see that there's something there, and you're hoping it'll surface properly and fast.

Sticking with it, hoping.

 Taphead, Vorn, Stefan & co:
I'm one of those guys who's been pimping Person since the pilot - and you're all utterly right. The exposition is ham-fisted, the easter-eggs a bit clunky and the genre beats are hardly original. But within that context, I think it does a hell of an entertaining job and is handling the shift from what was set up ostensibly as an action procedural to a clearly SF show co-starring a weakly godlike AI bloody well. And it nails those action moments - I still insist the sequence where Reese rescues Carter's son, cut to Unkle's Burn My Shadow, is one of the best edited action scenes in modern TV. And damned if it doesn't do a fine job with its secondary characters - Lionel Fusco's development has been a glory to watch.

I was watching Hell on Wheels but after the car crash of wasted potential that was the second season finale, I'm not sure I'll go back to it.

I'm surprised that more people here aren't into Homeland. Yes it is ridiculous but aside from the obvious greatness of the acting, the pacing of that show is just so refreshing that I can't give it up yet. They don't hold onto things, don't drag things out and keep secrets endlessly, annoyingly, tantalizingly hidden until the season finale. They throw shit out there when you really don't expect it and let you watch the fallout. I really like that. It's interesting.

On the eve of the third season of the Walking Dead, I'd like have a constructive discussion about the show and the comic. I want for this discussion mostly because I don't enjoy it and would like to talk about it with people who are reasonable, intelligible and not prone to illogical opinions (ie most of the internet) who do enjoy it, so I can understand the appeal or at least the view point.

I watched the first season of the show and went from being enthralled and enthusiastic to being routinely bored and frustrated with every aspect of the show, except for the make up, that I quit watching it. I've been told that the second season 'gets better' but I am not one to return my hand to stove top after finding it hot.

Now, I'm not a fan of the comics either, if you're thinking there's some adaptation related dilemma that annoys me. I find that the story telling in both is weak and repetitive, and they, the comic and the television show, both out stripped by their contemporaries in their respective mediums in such terrific ways that their popularity seems not only unfounded but near insanity. After this particularly inflammatory sentence, I will state that these are my opinions and should be taken as such. This is not the truth of the show or the comic, just one man's intense dislike for the show and the comic and him trying to come to terms with it.

However, it is critically hailed, it is enormously popular, so as I am the minority, I wish to understand the majority.

So, I'm sure that some Whitechapel resident posters watch and or have read the Walking Dead and I'm looking for a counterpoint.

I want to hear, from a fan or group of fans, what makes the show and or comic "good". In fact, I think good is not the proper descriptor here because there are a lot of middling things that can be described in the umbrella term that is "good".

What I want to know is what makes the Walking Dead great.

@Oddcult- eh, I dunno about that. Grell wrote Ollie a lot more snappy than what we got here. Even when Mike Barr wrote him he had more personality than the CW version. I can understand why they didn't go with bleeding heart liberal Denny O' Neil version, but they could have softened that aspect like they did on Justice League Unlimited and still have him a smart ass. Remember, in the Mike Grell version, Ollie's hero was Errol Flynn, so he was a little more "fun" than Batman. Instead, they made GA more like Batman. I guess this is supossed to be closer to the Andy Diggle "Year One" version, but with a whole bunch of family drama thrown in. I'll watch a couple more episodes to see if it gets better, but I'm thinking this show might not be for me (which sucks because I've been a GA fan since I was a kid).

Also, how is Starling City a less silly name than Star City?

With regard to the comic, Walking Dead is as close to a depiction of a "real" zombie apocalypse as has ever existed. Both because it's ongoing and because of Robert Kirkman's almost relentlessly naturalistic writing.

The show is entertaining as popular media, and an interesting companion piece to the comic, but limited by any number of real-world concerns, in a way the comic isn't.

@iaviv - his dialogue borders on mundane whenever something especially dramatic isn't happening, and even the big speeches tend to read very much like actual extemporaneous talking; he's kind of the anti-Sorkin in that regard. Likewise, there have been large spans of the book where nothing especially dangerous happens - some have complained that these issues are too boring or slowly-paced, but given that there are bound to be "safe" periods as the survivors get better and better at adapting to their environment, I find it very refreshing. There's still an overall ramping up of challenges as the book has gone on, but never to the point where it feels contrived.

The show, on the other hand, is paced in the way hour-long dramas tend to be paced, though many thought last season moved too slowly. I don't think the dialogue is worse necessarily, but characters tend to come to decisions too quickly, or without adequate explanation, in a way that rings false to some people. I love the show, mind, but I recognize that it's a different beast, and is subject to the whims of a much bigger kitchen full of cooks.

Just finished Season 1 of Alphas on Netflix. Great stuff. Luckily, our cable provider has season 2 on demand, so we'll start it this week. I am also hoping SyFy doesn't, A) screw it up, which they've done a good job with the show that I've seen so far, B) As Foamhead inferred, cancel it. Fingers crossed.

I found out yesterday that there's a new, 3D animated Turtles show on TV these days. This morning, I watched all five episodes that are out so far. As an old Turtles fan who recognises how terrible the first cartoon show was: It's good. It's really really good. The fights are zippy and fun, the animation is stylised but really really works, and the turtles are recognisably teenagers, something I feel has always been missing. At their youngest, they've tended to feel like they're in their early twenties, maybe. I recommend giving it a shot.

Funny thing I just realised while watching Red Dwarf, series six, episode Out of Time:

In Out of Time, they meet themselves 15 years in the future. They looked like this:

And now, 19 years later, they're back on TV, looking like THIS:

Of course, I do suspect that at least Barrie has had a bit of a dye job done to his hair, but the cast look remarkably good this many years on! Their energy is still 100%, too. Amazing people. I hope I get to enjoy such energy twenty-odd years in the future as well.

Coming up soon in the UK. Looks like it could be worth a punt.

UTOPIA (C4 2013)

Dennis Kelly's enigmatic thriller Utopia (6 x 60') centres around The Utopia Experiments, a legendary graphic novel shrouded in mystery. When Ian, Becky, Grant and Wilson Wilson, a small group of previously unconnected people find themselves in possession of an original manuscript of the fabled book, their lives suddenly and brutally implode, relentlessly pursued by a shadowy unit called The Network who will stop at nothing, to keep its origin and meaning secret. Paul Higgins (In the Loop, The Thick of It), Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits), Alexandra Roach (The Iron Lady) and Neil Maskell (Kill List) head up a stunning ensemble cast of UK talent including James Fox (Sherlock Holmes, A Passage to India, Performance), Geraldine James (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Simon McBurney (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Fiona O' Shaughnessy (Outcast, Malice, Aforethought), Adeel Akhtar (The Dictator, Four Lions), Oliver Woolford (Blackout) and Michael Smiley (Kill List) who find themselves embroiled in a cult conspiracy theory turned terrifyingly real in this brand-new six-part drama series. Kudos Film & TV.
