Tough to show expression when they're all wearing riot gear, but the art team made up for it with body language. Some nice dark comedy too which is always appreciated. Whoever said the end of the world wasn't hilarious?

I'm sure I'm not the only one a bit surprised to find the Gamekeeper didn't smack Sister Teresa from the start, but I do find the cat-and-mouse between them interesting, only... Which one's the cat? Spurrier wouldn't dare give our beloved Gamekeeper a Holy conversion of some sort... MLK, Gandhi, mother teresa would be 'X's' if they got infected. it's a funny idea, really: the crossed virus "inverts" your character. people that are basically , generally good turn into basic general rapists / sadists. people that are ABOVE AND BEYOND GOOD sister whassername become THE LEADERS IN FUCKED-UP-EDNESS.

Viceroy is tabula rasa so far, so speculation is pointless. No-one seems particularly likeable, there's been no character that engenders any degree of reader empathy yet. GK looks interesting, but you know anything we find out about him is going to be nasty. He's going to be out there still, crossed.

I think the Nun is going to turn out to be reading from a completely different book. She's a loose cannon of considerable magnitude, so I hope her character gets more involved.

Our narrator, Shaky, shows a marked level of perceptive acumen, above average intelligence, and an ability to plan ahead. Cold, and dispassionate, he shows no quality of character at all. In fact, his diary and it's musings seem to me to show almost psychopathic levels of dissociation and emotional withdrawal. That could just be situational, a kind of PTSD effect, but I don't think so. I think that fucker was like that from the start. If it was the old World, I think the Police would have been digging up his Patio to look for the heads at some point.

I've just read Badlands though, so my own mind might be too scarred to think rationally. Cynical, looking down people he felt inferior to him. He had a girlfriend and tried to find her when things went bad. It just went bad too quick. The shock of that left him vulnerable to a degree and easily influenced by GK who'd be a bastard no matter what the situation is. And as bad as he is, some of what GK says is common sense. It's where he goes with it that's dangerous. And we don't know how long Shaky was around him. If it was an extended period of time, he could have been completely mentally screwed up by that.
The whole Crossed world screws up anyone, whether they're normal or not. You're supposed to feel bad when you kill another human being. But here, killing an infected child is self defense. People who can't apply common sense or quickly think through possible consequences are people who can get you killed. It's not that they're bad, they're a liability. And getting attached to them can get you killed.
